Description: Ca2+ is a key second messenger in the intricate workings of the heart. In cardiac myocytes, Ca2+ signaling controls or modulates electrophysiological function, excitation-contraction coupling, contractile function, energy balance, cell death, and gene transcription. Thus, diverse Ca2+-dependent regulatory processes occur simultaneously within a cell. Yet, distinct signals can be resolved by local Ca2+ sensitive protein complexes and differential Ca2+ signal integration. In addition to its importance to normal cardiac function, such regulation is also crucial in disease conditions. Ca2+ is likely involved in ectopic cardiac rhythms in both atrial and ventricular tissues through generating triggered activity often appearing as delayed afterdepolarisations, particularly following cellular Ca overloading. Recent studies also implicate Ca2+ in Na+ channel expression and properties with consequences for conduction velocity and therefore arrhythmic substrate. At the cellular level, such regulation involves control of the activity of membrane ion channels and Ca2+ handling proteins. These in turn involve multiple extra- and intracellular signaling pathways. This e-book assembles review and original articles from experts in this field. It summarises major recent progress bearing on roles of Ca2+ in cardiac electrophysiological function encompassing both normal and abnormal cardiac function. These extend from physiological roles of Ca2+ signaling in pacemaker function, in particular generation of sino-atrial pacemaker potentials, to pathological roles of abnormal Ca2+ signaling in both atrial and ventricular arrhythmogenesis. It also seeks to bridge the gap between advances in basic science and development of new therapies.

Notes: A new nine node degenerated shell element is presented in this paper. In the formulation of the new element, an enhanced interpolation of the transverse shear strains in the natural co-ordinate system is used to overcome the shear locking problem, and an enhanced interpolation of the membrane strains in the local Cartesian co-ordinate system is applied to avoid membrane locking behaviour. It is shown that the resulting element has the requisite number of zero eigenvalues and associated rigid body modes. The element does not exhibit membrane or shear locking for large span/thickness ratios. To illustrate the good performance of the new element some examples are presented including comparisons with the behaviour of the selectively integrated Lagrangian degenerated shell elements.

Notes: The coupled heat and mass transfer partial differential equations as derived by Luikov are used to analyse freezing problems in porous media. A numerical model is subsequently developed to depict the frost heave mechanism in a freezing soil system. An example is given of the application of the model and the results are compared with those achieved from field experiments. Also, a novel application of the coincident node technique is presented for the coupled heat and mass transfer problem. This circumvents the numerical problems usually associated with flow through thin layers, in this case a vapour barrier, sandwiched between materials of greater thickness.

Notes: For transient thermal problems, discretizing in space by the finite element method yield a system of first-order ordinary differential equations which can be integrated in time by a finite difference based predictor-multicorrector scheme. At each time level the temperature field is obtained by solving a set of algebraic equations. In this paper the multigrid method is adopted for transient thermal problems. In order to model accurately the geometry of practical problems with various material properties, and to use the predictor-corrector scheme for the nonlinear transient analysis, the generalized multigrid approach, similar to that proposed in Reference 1, is employed. Some examples are included to illustrate the performance of this approach for nonlinear transient problems.

Description: This paper describes the High-Resolution Interferometer Sounder (HIS), which is the first of a new generation of passive remote sensors for achieving high vertical resolution sounding information, with special attention given to the sounding retrieval procedure. Examples of mesoscale temperature and moisture profiles obtained with airborne HIS during field programs held in 1986 are presented. A spacecraft version of the instrument, to be used in advanced global weather analysis and forecasting, is under development.
