    Notes: Heparin immobilization chemistry using alkyl spacer arms was adapted to optimize yield on polyurethane (PU) surfaces. The resultant biological activity of immobilized heparin (HI) was examined in vitro and in vivo, and compared with a heparin releasing (HR) system. Immobilized heparin retained its ability to bind and inactivate thrombin and Factor Xa; nonspecific coagulation factor binding was insignificant. Such activity cannot be attributed to the leakage of improperly bound heparin. Immobilized heparin-polurethane catheters implanted in canine femoral and jugular veins for 1 h periods exhibited significant reduction in thrombus formation compared with untreated PU contralateral controls. Polyurethane catheters coated with a 9% heparin dispersion in PU (HR) system provided even greater improvement in antithrombogenicity.

    Notes: Full-size models of a man and a rhesus monkey were exposed to radiofrequency (RF) radiation at 225 MHz. The model of man was also exposed to 2,000 MHz. Specific absorption rates (SARs) were measured in partial-body sections, such as the arms, legs, etc., using gradient-layer calorimeters. Also, front-surface thermographic images were obtained to qualitatively show the heating patterns. For all of the configurations used, the SAR in the limbs was much higher than in the torso. Agreement (whole-body SARs) with spheroidal models was better for both models at 225 MHz than at 2,000 MHz. These results indicate that in the frequency range two orders of magnitude above whole-body resonance, SAR in the limbs significantly contributes to the whole-body average SAR.

    Notes: The cellular proteins of Haemophilus paraphrophilus (ATCC 29242, ATCC 29241T, ATCC 29240, HK 477, HK 319, HK 159), H. aphrophilus (ATCC 33389T), H. influenzae (ATCC 31441), Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (ATCC 33384T), Pasteurella multocida (NCTC 10322T), P. haemolytica (9380T), and P. ureae (NCTC 10219T) were analyzed by high resolution two-dimensional protein electrophoresis and silver staining. The electrophoretic protein patterns of Haemophilus, Actinobacillus and Pasteurella were quite distinct. Also the patterns of P. multocida, P. haemolytica and P. ureae differed markedly. Except for H. paraphrophilus ATCC 29242, it was difficult to distinguish H. paraphrophilus from H. aphrophilus strains. Excluding ATCC 29242, H. paraphrophilus strains were quite similar. A. actinomycetemcomitans could easily be distinguished from all species tested, including the related H. aphrophilus, H. paraphrophilus, P. haemolytica, and P. ureae. High resolution two-dimensional protein electrophoresis is likely to contribute to a more unifying concept of bacterial species. Among the organisms examined only H. aphrophilus and H. paraphrophilus seem to requires revision of their current taxonomic positions.

    Notes: Experiments were conducted using twin-well calorimetry to determine the averaged whole-body specific absorption rate (SAR) for rat carcasses exposed to 360, 700, 915, and 2,450 MHz CW radiation in an anechoic chamber. All exposures were done with the long axis of the rat in an E-polarization. Additional experiments were conducted using a fiber optical temperature probe to determine local SAR in the brain, esophagus, colon, rectum, and tail during microwave exposure. The whole-body averaged SAR for the radiation frequencies examined follows a nonmonotonic function with 700 MHz as the resonant frequency. This result agrees with previous analytical estimates. Local SARs within the body and tail are nonuniform with significant frequency-specific hotspots in the colon, rectum, and tail.

    Notes: To obtain more detailed information relative to the potential usefulness of using radio frequency (RF) energy in treating hypothermia, anesthetized rhesus monkeys were used in a rewarming study that compared a conventional method (heating pad) with an RF induction coil system. Rectal temperature (Tre) of each subject was monitored, and enzyme and isoenzyme levels were determined from blood samples collected before, during, and up to 48 h after hypothermia in order to assess the effects of each rewarming method. The previously observed postprocedure rise in serum enzymes (most visible at 24 h) was again seen, with no statistically significant difference in the time course of serum enzyme levels between the two treatments for comparable durations of hypothermia. To test the limits of the ability of the RF induction coil system, successively more severe hypothermia was induced in the subjects to the point of cardiovascular collapse (Tre 〈 20°C); RF energy was successful in resuscitating the profoundly hypothermic subjects without discernible harmful effects.

    Notes: Flows of fluids with single-integral memory functionals are considered. Evaluation of the stress at a material point involves the deformation history of that point, and a dominant computational cost in finite element approximation is the construction of streamlines. It is shown that the simple crossed-triangle macro-element is in many ways an ideal finite element for the difficult non-linear, non-self-adjoint problem. The question as to whether this element produces convergent velocity and pressure solutions is addressed in the light of its failure to satisfy the discrete LBB condition. The effect of the element's ill-disposed (‘spurious’) pressure modes is discussed, and a pressure smoothing scheme is given which gives good results in Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows at various Reynolds and Deborah numbers. As an example of the element's success in modelling such flows, the problem of pressure differences in flows over transverse slots is studied numerically. The results are compared with experimental observations of such flows. The effect of fluid memory on the relation between first normal-stress differences and pressure differences is investigated.
