    Description: Average content of some trace elements in ice wedges, structure ice, Batagaika and Yana River water. Samples were taken rom the Batagay megaslump, 10 km to south east from Batagay settlement in the Verkhoyansky District of the Yakutia (Sakha) Republic, Russia. The analysis was carried out in samples filtered through the membrane filter (filtered) as well as in samples, that were taken after organic inclusions were precipitated (unfiltered).

    Description: Five manganese nodules from a range of deep-sea and fossil environments were selected for this study. Most samples were prepared for bulk analysis by grinding the material finely with a pestle in a porcelain mortar. However for samples Z2140 (ELT36.039-BT) and Timor (Wai_Bua_A) the nodule cores were discarded. Depending upon the chemical elements a varied range of analytical methods were used: X-Ray fluorescence, neutron activation, mass spectrometry and atomic absorption spectrometry. All samples were dried at 110°C for the determination of H2O+ loss. Structural water H2O- was determined by ignition at 1200°C (LOI) and total CO2 was measured by a Leco gasometric technique.

    Description: Three manganese nodules from the Pacific Ocean have been analysed for 35 elements by using mainly spectrophotometric and spectrographic methods. Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, and Pb were found in amounts approaching 1 %, which far exceeds their average concentrations in igneous rocks. On the other hand, elements having readily hydrolysable ions, such as Ga, Sc, Zr, Y, La and Ti, are present only in amounts comparable with their concentrations in igneous rocks. Sb, Bit Be, and Cr were not detected. The hydrochloric acid-insoluble fraction of nodules is practically free of the heavy metals that are characteristic of the acid-soluble fraction; it consists principally of clay minerals, together with lesser amounts of quartz, apatite, biotite and sodium and potassium felspars.

    Description: The study reported here involved the analysis of 12 rare earth and 13 minor elements in 13 nodules from the S.W. Pacific; 1 nodule from equatorial N. Pacific (DOMES Site C) as well as 1 nodule and 2 crusts from the Hawaiian-Emperor chain. After collection the samples were oven dried, ground with a pestle and mortar, and passed through a 50 ?m nylon sieve. The samples were prepared for spark source mass spectrometric analysis by mixing them in a ratio of 1:1, with ultra pure graphite powder. Pure Lu203 was mixed with the graphite (final concentration 500 ppm). The chemical analysis was performed by Spark Source Mass Spectrometry. Selected isotope images on the photoplate were used to determine the Q-2 emulsion response curve. The mass spectrometric data are considered to have a precision of ± 15% (based on repeat analyses of the U.S.G.S. standard BCR-1).
