    Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉Due to the inherently fluid‐mobile nature of W, the 〈sup〉182〈/sup〉W record of the early Earth may have been obscured by fluid‐induced mobilization of W. To investigate W mobilization in Archean greenstone sequences, we analyzed 〈sup〉182〈/sup〉W isotope systematics and major and trace element concentrations in samples from the 3.53 Ga old Onverwacht Group of the Kaapvaal Craton (South Africa) and the >3.51 Ga old Badampahar Group of the Singhbhum Craton (India). Our results for mafic and ultramafic metavolcanic rocks show W/Th ratios significantly higher than primary magmatic values, which suggests fluid‐induced W enrichment. Samples least affected by secondary W enrichment (W/Th 〈 0.26) show no resolvable W isotope anomalies from modern mantle values in both cratons. Samples from the Kaapvaal Craton with elevated W/Th exhibit deficits in 〈sup〉182〈/sup〉W as low as −8.1 ± 4.3 ppm compared to the modern mantle. Covariations of μ〈sup〉182〈/sup〉W with W/Th, and Ce/Pb suggest that negative isotope signatures were introduced during secondary fluid‐mediated processes. The enrichment of W is most evident in altered ultramafic rocks comprising serpentine, resulting in additional covariations between MgO, LOI, and W/Th. The W isotope composition of serpentinized komatiites reflects the composition of younger intruding granitoids. We therefore infer the latter as a possible source of W‐rich fluids. The Badampahar Group samples exhibit little W isotope variability. A well‐resolved 〈sup〉182〈/sup〉W deficit of −6.2 ± 2.9 ppm was determined in a single komatiite sample, which indicates an unknown fluid source, currently not represented in any other unit of the Singhbhum Craton.〈/p〉
    Description: Plain Language Summary: The tungsten (W) isotope composition of ancient rocks can be used to trace processes that occurred during Earth's early evolution. However, interactions between rocks and fluids may alter the W concentration and therefore influence the interpretation of W isotope data. To identify the source of such fluids and the processes by which they affect the W isotope composition of rocks, we analyzed ancient rock samples from South Africa and India. The isotope composition of rocks with a low W concentration reflects that of the modern Earth. Therefore, they do not trace the processes that occurred during Earth's early evolution. Samples from South Africa with untypically high W concentrations show a different isotopic composition. The variation in the W isotope signature correlates with other chemical indices that are susceptible to modification by fluid‐related processes. This shows that the W within the rocks is derived from an external fluid source and not from their original magmatic source. Samples with the highest W enrichment have a similar isotope composition as spatially associated intrusive rocks. By inference, the latter likely represent the source of W‐rich fluids. The samples from India show similar enrichment in W, indicating similar fluid‐related processes and W sources at both localities.〈/p〉

    Notes: Abstract Protons from nuclear reactions induced by 14 MeV neutrons are analysed with solid state detectors. A high background is caused by nuclear reactions in silicon. The application of a telescope with twodE/dx- detectors allows to suppress this background extensively. Proton identification is made by use of a two-dimensional analyser. The telescope is tested by recoil protons with polyethylene. This arrangement may also be used as a neutron spectrometer. The proton spectra from the reaction Ni(n, p)Co in forward direction (0°) and on an angle of 90° are compared. Nuclear temperature and level-density parameter are evaluated from statistical theory plots. The contribution of direct processes is estimated.

    Notes: Abstract The polarization of neutrons from thed-d-reaction was investigated in the energy regionE d=80 to 140keV at an angle ofΘ 1=50°lab. Using a polarimeter consisting of a He-gasscintillation detector and two plastic detectors it was possible to reduce the background to a negligible amount. A maximum of neutron polarization of (−14.9 ±2.2)% was found atE d=100 keV. The resonancelike behavior is a further indication of an unknown excited level in4He at 23.9 MeV as given in ref.14.

    Notes: Abstract The Ascutney Mountain complex of eastern Vermont, USA, is a composite epizonal pluton of genetically related gabbro to granite intrusives. Nd isotopic data are reported for mafic rocks, granites, and nearby country rock. The parental mafic magma producing the complex 122 m.y. ago had 87Sr/86Sr=0.7039, 143Nd/144Nd=0.512678 (ɛ Nd=+3.8) and δ 18O=6.1‰, indicating a mantle source with time-integrated lithophile element depletion. Uniform initial radiogenic isotope ratios for granites, which are undistinguishable from those for the most primitive gabbro, suggest that the granite magma evolved from the mafic magma without crustal contamination and that the increase in δ 18O, to about 7.8‰, is the result of fractional crystallization. Mafic rocks show a large range in initial 143Nd/144Nd ratio, from about 0.51267 to 0.51236 (ɛ Nd= +3.7 to −2.5), which is correlated with elevated 87Sr/86Sr ratios and δ 18O. These data substantiate the production of mafic lithologies by fractional crystallization of the parental magma accompanied by assimilation of up to about 50% crust. The local country rocks include gneiss and schist and assimilation involved representatives of both rock types. The isotopic and chemical relationships preclude derivation from a single batch of magma undergoing contamination and indicate that a large magma body at depth evolved largely by fractionation with batches of melt issued from this chamber being variably contaminated at higher levels or at the level of emplacement. The Precambrian gneisses of the Chester dome and overlying lower Paleozoic schists have essentially identical Nd isotope systematics which suggest a crustal formation age of about 1.6. b.y. The parental sediments for the schists were apparently derived from a protolith similar to the gneissic basement without appreciable Sm/Nd fractionation.

    Notes: Abstract The Ivrea zone represents a tilted cross section through deep continental crust. Sm-Nd isotopic data for peridotites from Baldissero and Balmuccia and for a suite of gabbros from the mafic formation adjacent to the Balmuccia peridotite provide evidence for an event of partial melting 607±19 Ma ago in an extended mantle source with ɛ 607 Nd =+0.4±0.3. The peridotites are interpreted as the corresponding melt residue, the lower part of the mafic formation as the complementary melts which underwent further differentiation immediately after extraction. The Finero body represents a complex with layers of phlogopite peridotite, hornblende peridotite, and amphibole-rich gabbro. The isotopic signatures fall into two groups: (1) highly radiogenic Nd and low-radiogenic Sr characterize the phlogopite-free, amphibole-rich rocks, whereas (2) low-radiogenic Nd and highly radiogenic Sr is found in ultramafics affected by “phlogopite metasomatism”. Phlogopite metasomatism in the Ivrea zone is dated by a Rb-Sr whole rock isochron yielding 293±13 Ma. It was fed by K-rich fluids which were probably derived from metasediments. The high initial ɛ 293 Nd value of about +7.5 for phlogopite-free samples indicates a high time-integrated Sm/Nd ratio in the Finero protolith 293 Ma ago. Sm-Nd analyses of metapelites from the paragneiss series yield Proterozoic “crustal residence ages” of 1.2 to 1.8 Ga. Internal Sm-Nd isochrons for three garnetiferous rocks show that closure of garnet at temperatures around 600° C or even lower occurred about 250 Ma ago.

    Notes: Abstract Apparent crustal residence ages indicated by Nd model age data for metamorphic rocks, sediments and granitoids of the Hercynian Fold Belt of Europe vary from 1.3 Ga to 3.0 Ga, but are mainly in the range 1.4–1.7 Ga. 2 Ga basement inliers have been documented previously in northern Spain and islands off northwestern France but, in addition to these, old (∼2–3 Ga) model ages are found along the southern margin of the fold belt. These do not identify old inliers but are interpreted to represent Archeanearly Proterozoic crustal components recycled from a southern source. The Nd data, when considered together with the surface geology and recent single-grain zircon ion microprobe data, argue against a binary mixing of Archean components with new Palaeozoic crustal additions to generate the main 1.4–1.7 Ga model age population. Hercynian Europe comprise mainly recycled Proterozoic components although significant new Palaeozoic additions as well as Archean contributions are indicated. Nd and Sr isotopic data together with previous chemical and petrographic observations allow the recognition of a northern belt of continent margin I-type granitoids grading southwards to inner continent S-type plutons in the eastern half of the fold belt. This felsic plutonic association is used to infer a Hercynian plate configuration involving the attachment of the fold belt to a southern parent cratonic block that the model age data suggest may be of early Proterozoic-Archean age.

    Notes: Abstract Two remarkable intensity-time patterns in the 113 and 64 MHz single-frequency radio flux records during a type I noise storm and/or a type IV burst on 31 July, 1983 are studied. A comparison of the patterns at both frequencies reveals a high degree of resemblance and inherent common structure although the 64 MHz pattern was seen 40 min later than the 113 MHz pattern. An interpretation is given assuming a slowly uprising and thereby expanding clumpy plasma-magnetic field configuration which is (via accompanying coronal loops) two times illuminated by energetic electrons coming from the soft X-ray flare precursor source region of the H-alpha flares F1 and F2 (see Figure 1).
