The microstructure of the magnetostrictive alloy terfenol, Tb0.27Dy0.73Fex, has been studied in the range 1.55≤x≤2.30. Image analysis has confirmed and quantified observations of the reabsorption of the rare-earth phase into the matrix after annealing, implying the existence of a solid solubility range. Similar measurements have demonstrated the growth of the primary RFe3 phase for all alloys with x〉2.00. Eutectic and peritectic temperatures of 892 and 1239 °C, respectively, have been determined by differential thermal analysis (DTA) for this composition range. The homogeneous, elongated grain structure induced by vertical float zoning increases k33 and allows the development of a uniform static strain throughout the rod.
