Notes: The cyanobacterium Anabaena cylindrica B629 was suspended in small glass beds and incubated in a gas-tight glass vessel outdoors under a gas atmosphere comprising carbon monoxide (0.2%), acetylene (5%), oxygen (6.5%), and nitrogen. The solution phase initially contained sodium bicarbonate (10mM) at pH 7. Under these conditions the organism continuously produced hydrogen gas for over three weeks. The temperature of the culture was maintained below 30°C and minimum night temperatures were recorded. The vessel was covered by a shadecloth, which reduced the natural illumination by approximately 70%. The system is an alternative to those requiring the strict absence of oxygen and little nitrogen, and requires virtually no attention during the incubation period.

Notes: The effects of potassium ferrocyanide and EDTA on ethyl alcohol production from molasses by Saccharomyces cerevisiae were investigated on simulated batch pilotplant-scale conditions for alcoholic fermentation of molasses. Ethyl alcohol production was more sensitive to ferrocyanide than to EDTA. When ferrocyanide was introduced into the cultures at the time of inoculation, there was stimulation of ethyl alcohol production, with 261 ppm ferrocyanide producing the maximum effect, which was 3.0% more than in control cultures. When added during the propagation of the yeast, ferrocyanide depressed ethyl alcohol production by 4.0% maximum whereas EDTA stimulated ethyl alcohol production by 2.0%. Addition of ferrocyanide during the fermentation stage produced no significant effect on alcohol production, whereas over a wide range of EDTA concentration there was a steady increase in alcohol yield.

Notes: An experimental investigation of an impinging water jet freezing on a melting solid surface has been carried out. Attention was focused on the stagnation region of an axisymmetric jet. In the experiment, a water jet was directed upward against the lower end of a meltable rod, having a diameter about twice that of the jet orifice. Solid octane (m.p. - 56.5°C) and solid mercury (m.p. - 38.9°C) served as the meltable materials. A laminar-axisymmetric flow model was developed to describe melting heat transfer in the presence of jet solidification within the impingement region. Measurements of the melting rate and conditions for the onset of jet solidification were found to agree quite well with the values predicted with this model.

Notes: In a clinical evaluation of marginal deterioration, 475 amalgram restorations were equally distributed in a 6 × 4 × 2 × 3 factorial design, based on alloy, operator, tooth, and number of restored surfaces. All factors except the last had a statistically significant effect after 6, 12 and 18 months. There were no consistent two-way interactions over time.

Notes: A fibrinogen derivative generated by thrombin was reacted with elastin to yield a new addition product or adduct between the two proteins. Addition of fibronectin, and then of collagen, did not interfere with the basic elastin-fibrinogen reaction and conferred the qualities of an artificial connective tissue to the product. Biochemical, structural and biomechanical aspects of the new matrix were studied. Aprotinin, heparin, thiomersal, and thiourea did not inhibit the main reaction; indeed, some of these ingredients improved the matrix cohesion. Scanning electron microscopy showed the genesis of a true network whose meshes were more reticulated by the addition of thiourea. Biomechanical studies, i.e., strength and elasticity showed the thiourea matrix to be the strongest. These intrinsic properties suggest the product could have biological and clinical applications.

Description / Table of Contents: Stereoselective Synthesis of Long-chain 1-O-(β-D-Maltosyl)-3-O-alkyl-sn-glycerols (Alkyl Glyceryl Ether Lysoglycolipids)The synthesis of long-chain 2-O-benzyl-3-O-benzyl-3-O-alkyl-sn-glycerols 5 was improved, making these compounds easily accessible for glycosylation experiments. Glycosylation with α-acetobromomaltose following a modified Koenigs-Knorr procedure after removal of the protective groups yielded the title compounds 9 in good yields. These compounds represent examples of alkyl glyceryl ether lysoglycolipids. Some properties of these amphiphilic compounds with a nonionic carbohydrate head-group differ not much (critical micell concentration, hemolytic activity), other properties differ very much (antitumor efficiency) from the properties of the analogous compounds with a zwitterionic phosphorylcholine head-group.

Notes: 1α,2α,4α,6α,-3,7-Diazatricyclo[4.1.0.02,4]heptane (cis-diaziridinocyclopentane) (1) has been prepared from the analogous cis-diepoxycyclopentane. Ring opening of the diepoxide with sodium azide produced a pair of regioisomeric azido alcohols. Tosylation and treatment with lithium aluminum hydride produced 1. The dibenzoyl derivative possessed the di-exo stereochemistry for the tertiary aziridine nitrogens. The 1H spectrum of 1 was temperature dependent. Both the CH and NH resonances underwent decoalescence as the temperature was lowered. Because the rate was independent of concentration, the mechanism is probably inversion of the secondary nitrogen, the first such example to occur by the interchange of two diastereotopic, secondary (NH) amine nitrogens within the same molecule. The free energy of activation at coalescence (0 °C) was measured to be 12.8 kcal mol-1. The unsymmetrical slow exchange of 1 is clearly consistent with the exo, endo stereochemistry for the secondary aziridine nitrogens, possibly stabilized by intramolecular attraction.

Notes: The temperatuure dependence of the vicinal OCH2CH2 coupling constant in the six-membered ring δ-valerolactone suggests the presence of at least two conformers of unequal energy. Analysis of this temperature dependence by the Wood-Fickett-Kirkwood method in six solvents produces free energy differences in the narrow range 0.8-1.4 kcal mol-1, with a mean of 1.0 kcal mol-1 and no apparent dependence on solvent polarity. Thus the two conformers, probably the half-chair and the classic boat, have similar polarities. The analogous four- and five-membered lactones show little or no temperature dependence for their analogous coupling constants, in agreement with the presence of a single conformation for these rings.

Notes: The γ effects on 13C shielding have been examined for a series of rigid molecules containing the substituents CH3, OH, NH2, F, Cl, Br or I. Plots of the γ effect vs the C—C-α—C-β—X dihedral angle are well scattered if the plots do not distinguish modes of substitution. For the series in which the resonating carbon is CH2, however, fairly linear correlations are observed for X=CH3, OH, NH2, Cl and Br. It is concluded that within a structurally defined and substitutionally homogeneous series, there is a reasonably linear stereochemical dependence. Although substitution at C-α does not seriously alter the linear relationship, hybridization of the intermediate carbons may be important. The slopes of the plots for the γ effect vs dihedral angle are remarkably similar. Neither a strictly steric (van der Waals) nor a strictly polar source can be the cause of the linear relationship, since our series of substituents ranges widely with respect to both size and electronegativity. The only two factors that are constant within the series are the removal of the hydrogen atom (C—C—C—H to C—C—C—X) and the addition of the bonding and nonbonding orbitals on X that were not present on H.
