Description / Table of Contents: Overview of the Development of the Human Brain and Spinal Cord -- Mechanisms of Development -- Causes of Congenital Malformations -- Neurulation and Neurulation Defects -- The Neural Crest and Craniofacial Malformations -- Development and Developmental Disorders of the Spinal Cord -- Development and Developmental Disorders of the Brain Stem -- Development and Developmental Disorders of the Human Cerebellum -- Development and Developmental Disorders of the Forebrain -- Development and Developmental Disorders of the Cerebral Cortex.
Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the development of the human central nervous system (CNS) in the context of its many developmental disorders due to genetic, environmental and hypoxic/ischaemic causes. The book contains three general, introductory chapters in which an overview of the development of the human brain and spinal cord, a summary of mechanisms of development as obtained in experimental studies in various invertebrates and vertebrates, and an overview of the causes of congenital malformations are presented. The developmental disorders of the human brain and spinal cord are presented in a regional, more or less segmental way, starting with neurulation and neural tube defects, and ending with developmental disorders of the cerebral cortex. These chapters are abundantly illustrated in colour with carefully chosen clinical case studies with imaging data, and when available, postmortem verification of the developmental disorders involved. In the third edition, more emphasis has been given to the developmental ontology based on the prosomeric approach, and fetal development. Prenatal diagnosis by ultrasound, MRI and DTI, and classifications of developmental disorders have been updated. A number of new Clinical Cases have been included. Several new co-authors participate in various chapters. The book is intended for advanced medical students, and all those clinicians working with children and adults with developmental disorders of the CNS. Unique to the book is the integration of data from human embryology, experimental and molecular findings in mice in particular, imaging and developmental neuropathology.

Description / Table of Contents: Overview of the Human Brain and Spinal Cord -- Vascularization of the Brain and Spinal Cord -- Notes on Techniques -- The Somatosensory System -- The Reticular Formation and the Neuromodulatory Systems -- The Cranial Nerves -- The Auditory System -- The Visual System -- Motor Systems -- The Cerebellum -- The Basal Ganglia -- The Autonomic Nervous System -- The Hypothalamus, the Preoptic Area and Hypothalamohypophysial Systems -- The Limbic System -- The Cerebral Cortex and Complex Cerebral Functions.
Abstract: Connections define the functions of neurons: information flows along connections, as well as growth factors and viruses, and even neuronal death can progress through connections. Accordingly, knowing how the various parts of the brain are interconnected to form functional systems is a prerequisite for properly understanding data from all fields in the neurosciences. Clinical Neuroanatomy: Brain Circuitry and Its Disorders bridges the gap between neuroanatomy and clinical neurology. It focuses on human and primate data in the context of brain circuitry disorders, which are so common in neurological practice. In addition, numerous clinical cases are presented to demonstrate how normal brain circuitry can be interrupted, and what the effects are. Following an introduction to the organization and vascularization of the human brain and the techniques used to study brain circuitry, the main neurofunctional systems are discussed, including the somatosensory, auditory, visual, motor, autonomic and limbic systems, the cerebral cortex and complex cerebral functions. In this 2nd edition, apart from a general updating, many new illustrations have been added and more emphasis is placed on modern techniques such as diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) and network analysis. Moreover, a developmental ontology based on the prosomeric model is applied, resulting in a more modern subdivision of the brain. The new edition of Clinical Neuroanatomy is primarily intended for neurologists, neuroradiologists and neuropathologists, as well as residents in these fields, but will also appeal to (neuro)anatomists and all those whose work involves human brain mapping.

Notes: Samples of an alumina powder aerosol were collected on whisker particle collectors and analysed following an improved evaluation scheme which allows the empirical size distribution to be corrected for the effect of a non-uniform collection efficiency. The measurement results are given in terms of log-normal distribution functions. Some ambiguity was encountered in interpreting particle aggregates that were found on the whisker collectors. By including the results of laser light-scattering experiments in the size analysis, this ambiguity was removed. Advantages and disadvantages of the whisker collector concept compared with light-scattering methods are discussed.

Description: The brain of each animal shows specific traits that reflect its phylogenetic history and its particular lifestyle. Therefore, comparing brains is not just a mere intellectual exercise, but it helps understanding how the brain allows adaptive behavioural strategies to face an ever-changing world and how this complex organ has evolved during phylogeny, giving rise to complex mental processes in humans and other animals. These questions attracted scientists since the times of Santiago Ramon y Cajal one of the founders of comparative neurobiology. In the last decade, this discipline has undergone a true revolution due to the analysis of expression patterns of morphogenetic genes in embryos of different animals. The papers of this e-book are good examples of modern comparative neurobiology, which mainly focuses on the following four Grand Questions: a) How are different brains built during ontogeny? b) What is the anatomical organization of mature brains and how can they be compared? c) How do brains work to accomplish their function of ensuring survival and, ultimately, reproductive success? d) How have brains evolved during phylogeny? The title of this e-book, Adaptive Function and Brain Evolution, stresses the importance of comparative studies to understand brain function and, the reverse, of considering brain function to properly understand brain evolution. These issues should be taken into account when using animals in the research of mental function and dysfunction, and are fundamental to understand the origins of the human mind.
