Abstract: This book provides a new framework for analysis of slope nonlinear stochastic seismic dynamic response based on the new theoretical tool of stochastic dynamics. The coupling effects of uncertainty of geological parameters, strong dynamic nonlinearity, and randomness of ground motion are considered in the process of the seismic dynamic stability assessment of slope. In this book, an intensity frequency non-stationary stochastic ground motion model based on time-domain stochastic process description is preliminarily established to characterize the randomness of earthquakes. The spatial distribution random field model of geotechnical parameters is established to describe the time-space variability of geotechnical parameters. Based on the basic theory of stochastic dynamics, the seismic stability performance evaluation method of slope is established. The slope seismic dynamic model test based on large complex shaking table is performed to verify and modify the proposed framework and method. This book sheds new light on the development of nonlinear seismic stochastic dynamics and seismic design of slope engineering. .

Abstract: This book provides a new design and evaluation framework based on slope Stochastic Dynamics theory to probabilistic seismic performance for slope engineering. For the seismic dynamic stability safety of slope, it shifts from deterministic seismic dynamic analysis to quantitative analysis based on nonlinear stochastic dynamics, that is, from qualitative to the description of stochasticity of earthquake excitation that meet the needs in related design specification and establish a performance standard. In the nonlinear dynamic time history analysis of slope subjected to seismic ground motion, the term “randomness” is used to express the uncertainty in the intensity and frequency of earthquake excitation for slope engineering dynamic seismic performance. It mainly includes seismic design fortification standard, corresponding ground motion excitation, performance index threshold, and slope deterministic nonlinear seismic dynamic response. Even more than that, the seismic dynamic large deformation approaches of the whole process and comprehensive analysis for flow analysis after slope instability failure. Eventually, the probabilistic seismic dynamic performance of the slope engineering will be characterized by nonlinear dynamic reliability.

Abstract: This book explains in an easy-to-understand manner the “check” points to keep in mind when inspecting various social infrastructure structures. It is put together in a way that not only engineers who are on the front line of maintenance and management but also engineers who are not normally involved in maintenance and management of social infrastructures as well as general public can understand the importance of social infrastructure inspection work.

Notes: In the design, development, and manufacturing stage of industrial products, engineers usually focus on the problems caused by hardware or software, but pay less attention to problems caused by “human error,” which may significantly affect system reliability and safety. Although operating procedures are strictly followed, human error still may occur occasionally. Among the influencing factors, the inappropriate design of standard operation procedure (SOP) or standard assembly procedure (SAP) is an important and latent reason for unexpected results found during human operation. To reduce the error probability and error effects of these unexpected behaviors in the industrial work process, overall evaluation of SOP or SAP quality has become an essential task. The human error criticality analysis (HECA) method was developed to identify the potentially critical problems caused by human error in the human operation system. This method performs task analysis on the basis of operation procedure. For example, SOP, analyzes the human error probability (HEP) for each human operation step, and assesses its error effects to the whole system. The results of the analysis will show the interrelationship that exists between critical human tasks, critical human error modes, and human reliability information of the human operation system. To identify the robustness of the model, a case study of initiator assembly tasks was conducted. Results show that the HECA method is practicable in evaluating the operation procedure, and the information is valuable in identifying the means to upgrade human reliability and system safety for human tasks.

Notes: The ABX test or matching-to-sample is a discrimination procedure involving presentation of both test and control items, and then presentation of one of the two items as a blind sample. The third (blind sample) must then be identified correctly to match it to the one correct alternative from the inspection phase. We hypothesized that the ABX test might have an advantage over other discrimination methods due to a warm-up effect arising from the inspection phase containing both test and control items. Furthermore, the ABX test might prove generally useful like the triangle test since it can be used when there is no specified attribute to be discriminated. The ABX test was compared to several other discrimination procedures. No advantage was observed in a variety of stimuli varying in complexity and in the difficulty of the discrimination.

Notes: Abstract Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) has been shown to induce apoptosis on normal hepatocytes and hepatoma cells both in vitro and in vivo. However, how the TGF-β induces apoptosis is still not clear. We examined the expression of anti-apoptosis proteins and sensitivity to TGF-β in three well differentiated human hepatoma cell lines. Two TGF-β sensitive cell lines Hep3B and HuH7 totally lacked Bcl-2. In contrast, the TGF-β resistant HepG2 cells expressed a substantial amount of Bcl-2. All three cell lines expressed equal amounts of Bcl-XL, Bcl-XS and Bax. Overexpression of Bcl-2 in Hep3B and HuH7 cells protected them from TGF-β-induced apoptosis. TGF-β treatment increased intracellular peroxide production and suppressed the expression of glutathione-S-transferase in the Hep3B cells, and these effects were partially suppressed by the overexpression of Bcl-2. These results suggest that Bcl-2 may protect cell from TGF-β-F-induced apoptosis by interfering TGF-β generated signals leading to induce reactive oxygen species production.

Notes: Abstract A novel chemiluminescence (CL) flow-through sensor for the determination of analgin with flow-injection analysis (FIA) based on the auto-oxidation of analgin in the presence of Tween 80 sensitized by Rhodamine 6G immobilized on a cation-exchange column is described. This sensor responds linearly to the analgin concentration in the range of 0.4 ∼ 10 mg/L, with a detection limit (3σ) of 0.15 mg/L. A complete analysis, including sampling and washing, takes 1 min with a relative standard deviation of 〈 5%. The sensor is stable for over 200 determinations and has successfully been applied to the determination of analgin in pharmaceutical preparations.
