Notizen: Abstract. The Dialectica-style functional interpretation of Kripke-Platek set theory with infinity ( $\hbox{\sf KP} \omega$ ) given in [1] uses a choice functional (which is not a definable set function of ( $hbox{\sf KP} \omega$ ). By means of a Diller-Nahm-style interpretation (cf. [4]) it is possible to eliminate the choice functional and give an interpretation by set functionals primitive recursive in $x\mapsto\omega$ . This yields the following characterization: The class of $\Sigma$ -definable set functions of $\hbox{\sf KP} \omega$ coincides with the collection of set functionals of type 1 primitive recursive in $x\mapsto \omega$ .

Schlagwort(e): Avian genome evolution ; Intragenomic DNA sequence homology Reduced-stringency DNA reassociation

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Summary We have investigated the intragenomic DNA sequence homologies of twelve species of birds representing five orders, and emphasizing Galliformes. This study differs in two important ways from the classical approaches taken in constructing and evaluating phylogenies based on DNA sequence similarities. Comparisons are made on the basis of sequence homologieswithin genomes of related birds, rather than between genomes. DNA is reassociated at 50°C in 0.5M phosphate buffer; these conditions allow formation and detection of duplexes containing more mismatch than would normally be permitted using more stringent conditions, affording an opportunity to observe more ancient sequence homologies. Thermal stability profiles of DNA duplexes formed under these conditions are the basis of comparison; three general patterns were observed. This approach emphasizes differences in sequence composition between genomes while the more traditional method of intergenomic tracer DNA hybridization at higher stringency emphasizes sequence similarities. No correlation was found between taxonomic position and intragenomic sequence composition, either within or between lineages. The thermal stability profiles of DNA duplexes formed within avian genomes did not reflect the biological similarities inferred from morphology, karyotype, and studies of interspecific hybridization. While all of the differences observed could have occurred over geological time, it was surprising that the genomes of the domestic chicken and the Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus gallus) differ in their sequence compositions. It appears that amplification/reduction events and/or positional changes occur rather often during evolution of a lineage.

Schlagwort(e): Key words: PTH — Mechanical strength — Cross-sectional moment of inertia — Cortical porosity — Osteoporosis.

Notizen: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to determine if the increased cortical bone porosity induced by intermittently administered parathyroid hormone (PTH) reduces bone strength significantly. Mature ovary-intact New Zealand white rabbits were treated with once daily injections of vehicle, or PTH(1-34), LY333334, at 10 or 40 μg/kg/day for 140 days. Geometry of the femoral midshaft was measured to evaluate changes in the cross-sectional moment of inertia (CSMI). Cortical porosity was measured in the midshaft of the tibia by dividing cortical area into three zones based on equal divisions of cortical diameter: near endocortical (Zone I), near intermediate (Zone II), and near periosteal (Zone III) regions. Total cortical porosity significantly increased after PTH treatment from 1.4% in the controls to 6.3% in the higher dose group, but the location of the new porosities was not randomly distributed. In the controls, porosity of Zones I and II (both 1.7%) was almost twice as much as that of Zone III (0.9%). In the lower dose group, cortical porosity of Zone I (5.5%) and II (1.8%) was greater than in Zone III (0.9%), but these differences were not statistically significant. In the higher dose group, cortical porosity of Zone I (11.5%) and II (6.1%) significantly increased compared with Zone III (1.4%) (P 〈 0.0005). Histomorphometric measurements showed that bone formation rate on both periosteal and endocortical surfaces increased, resulting in increased bone area and cortical area in the higher dose group. A model was developed to evaluate the effect of the changes in geometry and porosity on CSMI in the different zones. This simulation model indicated that CSMI in the higher dose group was significantly greater than in the other two groups, despite the increased porosity. We speculate the reason to be that porosity increased near the endocortical surface, where its mechanical effect is small. This increase was more than offset by apposition of new bone on the periosteal surface. These data suggest that (1) PTH increases cortical porosity in a dose-dependent manner, primarily near endocortical surfaces; (2) because of this nonhomogeneous distribution, the mechanical effect of increased porosity is small; (3) the increased cortical porosity associated with PTH treatment is more than offset by periosteal apposition of new bone, causing an overall increase in the bending rigidity of cortical bone; and (4) these changes cannot be accurately evaluated using noninvasive methods of bone densitometry, which cannot account for the location of bone gain and bone loss.

Notizen: Summary In human the XY ovary is degenerative, there being scant evidence of persistence of that organ beyond the perinatal period. Here we describe indications of functional ovarian tissue in a 17-year-old female with male karyotype, H-Y+ cellular phenotype, and some signs of the Turner syndrome. Her gonads were removed after the onset of secondary amenorrhea. Histological examination revealed a degenerative right ovary devoid of germ cells and follicles, and a left streak gonad. There was no trace of testicular development in either side.

Notizen: Abstract Philippine Red Vented Cockatoos were being trapped in the wild and dispersed directly to private homes, aviarys, pet stores and for export to the United States of America. Except for non-aggressive behaviour and tiring easily the subjects showed clinically nothing peculiar. Numerous cases of Aspergillosis with no clinical signs prior to death were being reported at the United States Air Force Base, Clark Field, Angeles City, Philippines. In all cases stress was a predisposing factor to death; such as enclosure in a small bird cage. Those birds in aviarys that were kept free-flying remained clinically normal, with no deaths recorded. Systematiç examination to determine the causative source of infection was carried out and revealed natural infection in the wild state as the cause of disease in caged Red Vented Cockatoos in the Philippines. Examination on three other species of Philippine Pstitticine birds revealed only the Red Vented Cockatoo to be infected or a latent carrier in the wild state.

Notizen: Abstract Clostridium botulinum type A spore challenges were given orogastrically to adult mice that had been treated with metronidazole. The organism multiplied in the intestinal tract for up to five days if it was administered 9–48 h after the last dose of metronidazole. The known antibacterial spectrum of metronidazole indicated that obligate anaerobic bacteria are important in the natural resistance of adult mice to colonization byC. botulinum, but treatment with the antimicrobial agent did not reduce the number of these bacteria in the cecum and colon.

Notizen: Abstract Both ac and dc abdominal electrical recordings were made on fasted and fed human subjects using a spatial array of 18 cutaneous, biopotential electrodes. Controlled skin puncture minimized cutaneous potentials. Pregelling electrodes minimized drift. The recording sessions were between two and three hours in length. We determined the optimal location for ac recording of a 3 cpm wave at a location on the midline approximately 5 cm below the xiphoid process. Seven cpm waves were also observed in one individual at the same location. The dc values were fed into a Hewlett Packard 1000 computer which interpolated the intermediate values and plotted twodimensional contour plots which were examined visually. The right abdominal surface was typically 1.8 mV more negative than the left for prefeeding. The left abdominal surface was typically 4.6 mV more negative than the right for postfeeding. We propose an electrical model that explains these results during the fasted state.
