Notizen: Presents the idea that the "Aubry" law context, which concerns the reorganization of working time, constitutes an encouragement to decentralize the collective negotiation. Introduced in June 1998, this mechanism represents an opportunity to observe innovative negotiation modes and the construct of organizations' models. These models aim to associate the principles of Taylorism with the increasing need for flexibility. Through negotiation cases, the authors observe the manner in which the social partners build satisfactory compromises regarding work and the organization of working time. Such processes show the ability of employees to participate in organizational constructs and their creativity. The empirical observations illustrate the debate on the renewal of the Taylorian approach for organizations. Historically, in France, the action of trade union organizations has been deeply rooted in the protest against the Taylorian model; today the union movement constitutes, in our understanding, one phase of professional relations in the reshaping process of the Taylorian model of organization.

Notizen: A numerical investigation aimed at understanding the flow and heat transfer characteristics of pulsating turbulent flow in an abrupt pipe expansion was carried out. The flow patterns are classified by four parameters; the Reynolds number, the Prandtl number, the abrupt expansion ratio and the pulsation frequency. The influence of these parameters on the flow was studied in the range 104〈Re〈5×104, 0.7〈Pr〈7.0, 0.2〈d/D〈0.6 and 5〈f〈35. It was found that the influence of pulsation on the mean time-averaged Nusselt number is insignificant (around 10 per cent increase) for fluids having a Prandtl number less than unity. This effect is appreciable (around 30 per cent increase) for fluids having Prandtl number greater than unity. For all pulsation frequencies, the variation in the mean time-averaged Nusselt number, maximum Nusselt number and its location with Reynolds number and diameter ratio exhibit similar characteristics to steady flows.

Notizen: The fireworks industry is a dangerous business. Many disasters occur due to manufacturing and use of fireworks. It has been recorded that there have been 15 disasters resulting from fireworks worldwide. Malaysia has experienced such tragedies through a fire and explosion of Bright Sparklers fireworks factory. This paper summarizes the sequence of events which led to the Bright Sparkler disaster and proposes some lessons which could be learned from the experience.

Notizen: A disaster and a crisis are two different, and related events. The two terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Man-made disaster that occurs at an industrial organization, may develop into an industrial crisis. Crisis can happen to any organization. It has been noted that there were no universally accepted definitions yet developed for disaster and crisis. There is also no universally available criteria, to define the disaster in terms of the consequences, such as the casualties and the cost of damage. This paper reviews the definitions, types, characteristics, criteria and models of disaster and crisis. Also the types of crisis were rearranged and the differences between the disasters and crises have been summarized.

Notizen: Major hazard installations (MHIs) are dealing with hazardous substances which exceed the threshold quantity. MHIs are characterized by tight coupling and high complexity. Due to their complexity, MHIs require well trained managers who have good experience at all levels to manage the operations successfully. The managements of major hazard installations play a vital role in the success or failure of their installation. The world has witnessed many incidents in major hazard installations due to failure of the management at all levels. This paper summarizes in brief the management errors for several incidents which occurred worldwide. Also, the paper reviews the management errors which led to an incident at a petrochemical plant in East Malaysia.

Notizen: Major hazard organizations are dealing with hazardous material exceeding the threshold quantity. Major hazard organizations are relatively secure areas and cannot fail from single error. However, failure of an organization to control hazardous material usually results in a technological man-made disaster. The conditions preceding the onset of technological man-made disaster are collectively called the technological man-made disaster precondition phase "incubation period". A model has been developed representing the technological man-made disaster pre-condition phase where it focuses on the origin of the technological man-made disaster. The model was based on detailed analysis of four technological man-made disasters at major hazard installations in Malaysia.

Notizen: Environmental problems are caused directly or indirectly by the patterns of production by industries, patterns of consumption and behavior of the consumers. The shaping of attitude and values, commitment and skills needed to preserve and protect the environment begins at an early age. Hence educators play an influential role in developing new patterns of behaviors for individuals. Accordingly, aims to determine the level of knowledge, environmental concern and ecologically conscious consumer behavior and identify the extent of involvement in nature-related activities of school teachers. Also investigates the relationships between these variables. The subjects were 285 school teachers who were randomly selected from ten regular government schools in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. A survey was conducted using drop and collect method. The data illustrated the presence of high level of environmental concern among the teachers. The environmental knowledge was fair but generally poor in understanding of the underlying causes of environmental problems. The practices of environmentally responsible behavior were not in concert with the level of concern and knowledge. The respondents were not actively involved in nature-related activities. Proposes ways of enhancing the ecological awareness and responsibilities of the teachers.

Notizen: To examine the importance of the aromatic side chains of enkephalin on opiate activity, we report the synthesis and conformational analysis of a series of analogues related to enkephalin with β-naphthylalanine in place of phenylalanine at the fourth position. Three linear analogues (Tyr-D-Ala-Gly-(L and D)-β Nal(1)-Leu-NH2 and Tyr-D-Ala-Gly-β Nal(2)-Leu-NH2) were initially synthesized to examine the effect of the substitution on biological activity. The increased activity of these peptides at the μ-opiate receptor, compared to native Leu-enkephalin, prompted us to examine the more conformational constrained analogues, Tr-c[D-A2bu-Gly-(L and D)-β Nal(1)-Leu], incorporating a α,γ-diaminobutyric acid at the second position and cyclization to the carboxylic end of the leucine. These two cyclic analogues provide insight into the necessity for the L chirality of the aromatic residue at position 4. The Tyr-c[D-A2bu-Gly-L-β Nal(1)-Leu] analogue is highly potent and displays a slight preference for the μ receptor. The conformational analysis indicates that despite the high flexibility of the tyrosine side chain, the aromatic rings of the tyrosine and naphthylalanine are relatively distant from each other. The presence of two intramolecular hydrogen bonds help maintain the conformation of the 14-membered backbone ring that keeps the side chains directed away from each other. These findings are in agreement with our model of an extended structure required for μ selectivity and a folded form with close aromatic ring placement for δ selectivity.

Notizen: This study is a unified approach to quantum theories of polyacen carcinogenesis. Part I discusses the M, L, and B regions theory. Although the M region of polyacens is much less reactive than is the K region, the chemical reactivity of these two regions parallels each other. Consequently, the K-L Pullman's theory may be reformulated by replacing the K region by the M region. The M-L regions theory improves all the quantum structure-carcinogenic activity relationships obtained previously in the K-L framework. Moreover, it would appear that in these correlations, the most important role is played by nonconcerted electrophilic reactions. We suggest that the M-L modified Pullman's theory and the Bay (B) region theory, proposed by Jerina et al., are related to different steps of the metabolic activation mechanism leading to ultimate carcinogen: the first step for the Pullman's theory and the carbocation step for the theory of the Bay region. We have termed the “M, L and B regions theory” as this unified approach to the problem of polyacens carcinogenesis.
