Description / Table of Contents: Methylmethacrylat (MMA) mit einem Prepolymergehalt von 6-8% wurde mit unterschiedlichen Anteilen (1-20%) 2-Ethylhexylmethacrylat (EMMA), n-Hexylmethacrylat (HMA), 2-Ethylhexylacrylat (EHA) oder n-Hexylacrylat (HA) copolymerisiert.
Notes: The paper describes the fabrication of cast acrylic sheets by copolymerizing a prepolymer syrup of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with varying amounts (1-20 wt.-%) of 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA), n-hexyl methacrylate (HMA), 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA) and n-hexyl acrylate (HA). The effect of structure of copolymer on light transmittance, density and mechanical properties was evaluated. Tensile strength and storage modulus decreased with increasing comonomer content. Strain increased significantly in the case of MMA/EHA and MMA/HA copolymer sheets having 15 and 20 wt.-% of comonomer. Softening temperature of copolymer samples was determined using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Heat deflection temperature under flexural load and softening temperature decreased with increasing comonomer content in copolymer.

Notes: The curing behaviour of bismethacryloyl derivative of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (vinyl ester VE resin) containing styrene and α-methyl styrene (MS) as reactive diluents was studied. Delayed curing was observed in samples containing increasing proportions of MS. Interfacial shear stress of untreated as well as γ-methacryloyloxy-propyl trimethoxy silane (MTS) treated, glass fibre-reinforced VE resin composites were measured by single fibre technique. In comparison to untreated glass fibres, a 30 - 50% increase in interfacial shear stress was observed in composites based on MTS treated glass fibres. Addition of up to 5 wt.-% MS to VE resin did not affect the interfacial shear strength (ILSS). This behaviour was observed by using ILSS measurement of both glass fabric-reinforced composites as well as single fibre specimens. Further increase in MS to 15 wt.-% resulted in an increase in ILSS and bending stiffness as well as flexural strength.

Notes: The design of spiroorthocarbonate monomers (SOCs) and related structures is discussed with the aim of maximizing monomer polymerizability in the absence of undesirable byproducts. The successful syntheses of N,S-analogs of aryl- and alkaryl-SOCs are reported; these are monomers of structure where P and Q are —O— and —OC(CH3)2-, mp 156-158°C; and P and Q are —OCH2— and —OCH2—, mp 148-150°C. As is indicated by infrared spectra, the polymerization of both monomers is initiated by boron trifluoride etherate. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A series of 24 cyclic siloxane-based liquid crystalline compounds was synthesized using conventional hydrosilation chemistry. Variables examined included ring size, spacer group length, and type and composition of pendant mesogeric groups. Both pentamethylhydro- and tetramethylhydrosiloxane rings were reacted with mesogens based on cholesterol, biphenyl, or equimolar mixtures of both. Four different length spacer groups containing terminal vinyl groups were used to attach the mesogens to the cyclic siloxane core. The thermotropic liquid crystalline phase behavior was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). A lengthening of spacer groups resulted in lower crystallization temperatures for the biphenyl-based compounds and lower glass transition temperatures for the cholesterol- and mixed mesogen-based compounds. The tetramethyl ring derivatives exhibited higher glass transition or crystallization temperatures than their pentamethyl counterparts. Biphenyl-based compounds exhibited low temperature crystalline phases while the cholesterol-based compounds exhibited low temperature glassy phases. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The hot corrosion behaviour of a platinum containing nickel based superalloy (RJM 2012) is compared with that of a similar alloy (IN 792 + Hf) without platinum. The results of burner rig testing at 800°C showed that the oxide scales on the platinum containing alloy were still very protective after 1000 h on test whilst the alloy without platinum was severely attacked after only 200 h. The influence of platinum on the degradation mechanisms is discussed.

Notes: Electrochemical detection has been shown to be a sensitive method of detection in capillary electrophoresis (CE). The small sample volume required for CE makes it ideal for the analysis of microdialysis samples. In this paper, capillary electrophoresis with electrochemical detection is utilized in the analysis of samples obtained during continuous monitoring of the pharmacokinetics of L-dopa in the rat. The detection limit for L-dopa was 98 attomoles or 3.9 ng/mL. The elimination half-life was calculated to be 10.3 ± 1.1 minutes. Voltammetric characterization was used to verify the identity of L-dopa and its metabolites. The effects of electrochemical pretreatment on the detector performance was also investigated.

Notes: The paper describes the synthesis of vinyl esters using epoxy-novolac resin. The curing behaviour of the resins containing different portions of styrene and α-methyl styrene (α-MS) as reactive diluents was studied by gel time determination. Delayed curing was observed in samples containing increasing proportions of α-MS. An increase in the α-MS content resulted in a decrease in the tensile strength and increase in heat deflection temperature of the cured sheets. The flexural strength and flexural modulus of both resin and glass fibre-reinforced composites (resin content approx. 41 wt.-%) increased. Treatment with boiling water (12 h) of laminates resulted in a decrease in interlaminar shear strength with an increase in α-MS content.

Notes: Copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and N-cyclohexyl maleimide (NCM) with low intrinsic viscosity were obtained when free-radical copolymerization was carried out in benzene solution. Copolymers containing 0-30 wt.-% NCM were also prepared by bulk polymerization as cast acrylic sheets and had much higher intrinsic viscosity. An increase in NCM content in copolymers resulted in an increase in thermal stability and modulues and a decrease in tensile strength, strain at break, impact strength of unnotched specimen and light transmittance. The increase in haze was marginal up to 15 wt.-% of NCM. A decrease in water absorption was observed with an increase in NCM content.

Notes: The viscoelastic properties of a methylmethacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS) modifier over the temperature range -140 to 20°C and frequency range 0.01592 (0.1 Rad/s) to 79.62 Hz (500 Rad/s) is represented in terms of a relaxation function proposed by Havriliak and Shortridge to represent the viscoelastic beta process of MBS-modified and unmodified poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The parameters of the expression as well as their temperature dependence were determined from the multiresponse methods developed by Havriliak and Watts. The complex modulus of PVC/MBS modifier blends at 8.26, 10.71, and 13.04 wt % modifier, over a temperature range -140-20°C, and at a frequency of 1 Hz can be represented, nearly within experimental error, in terms of the complex modulus of the neat components, the volume fraction of the modifier, and the blend equations of Uemura and Takayanagi. The small but persistent deviations that are observed are discussed in terms of hydrostatic stresses due to differential coefficients of expansion.

Notes: Materials that polymerize without substantial volume contraction have numerous valuable applications in dentistry and other fields. Two new symmetrical aliphatic spiro-orthocar-bonates, formulated from cis- and trans-2-hydroxymethyl-cyclohexanol to give 2,3,8,9-di(tetramethylene)-1,5,7,11-tetraoxaspiro [5,5] undecanes, showed, by density determinations in dilute solution, that expansion occurs with polymerization. The cis / cis-spiroorthocarbonate racemic mixture showed a 3.9% expansion upon polymerization, and the trans/trans racemic mixture showed a 3.5% expansion. The densities were determined by pycnometry, with a precision reliable to at least four figures. This method is thus recommended for cases of soluble monomer/polymer pairs for which the density difference will be small and where the partial specific volumes are independent of concentration, thereby avoiding the complexities of variable physical states of monomer and/or polymer. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
