Description / Table of Contents: Study Framework -- Introduction and Background -- Description of the Physical Environment -- Literature Review -- Physical Hydrology.
Abstract: This book combines the results of the research activities in the assessment of water resources environment and an integrated water resource monitoring program to support preservation efforts of the aquatic environment of the Cradle of Humankind (COH), World Heritage Sites. A poor understanding of the surface and groundwater resources of the COH property has precipitated often alarmist reporting in the media regarding the negative impacts associated with various sources of poor quality water. The most notable of these is the acid mine drainage threat to karst ecosystems and fossil sites across the property. These circumstances have generated wide and considerable concern for the preservation of the UNESCO-inscribed fossil sites and integrity of the water resources of the property.

Description / Table of Contents: Conceptualising Metropolitan Regions: How Institutions, Policies, Spatial Imaginaries and Planning are Influencing Metropolitan Development -- Part I: Institutions and Contemporary Institutional Shifts -- Metropolitan Revolution or Metropolitan Evolution? The (Dis)continuities in Metropolitan Institutional Reforms -- The Multiple Agencies of Metropolitan Institutions: Is There Convergence? -- What is at Stake for Metropolitan Regions and Their Governance Institutions? -- Part II: Policies and Ideas -- Learning from Elsewhere? A Critical Account on the Mobilisation of Metropolitan Policies -- From Here to There: Mapping the Metropolitan Politics of Policy Mobilities.
Abstract: The aim of this book is to investigate contemporary processes of metropolitan change and approaches to planning and governing metropolitan regions. To do so, it focuses on four central tenets of metropolitan change in terms of planning and governance: institutional approaches, policy mobilities, spatial imaginaries, and planning styles. The book’s main contribution lies in providing readers with a new conceptual and analytical framework for researching contemporary dynamics in metropolitan regions. It will chiefly benefit researchers and students in planning, urban studies, policy and governance studies, especially those interested in metropolitan regions. The relentless pace of urban change in globalization poses fundamental questions about how to best plan and govern 21st-century metropolitan regions. The problem for metropolitan regions—especially for those with policy and decision-making responsibilities—is a growing recognition that these spaces are typically reliant on inadequate urban-economic infrastructure and fragmented planning and governance arrangements. Moreover, as the demand for more ‘appropriate’—i.e., more flexible, networked and smart—forms of planning and governance increases, new expressions of territorial cooperation and conflict are emerging around issues and agendas of (de-)growth, infrastructure expansion, and the collective provision of services.

Description / Table of Contents: Why Hadean?- Thermal evolution models -- Radionuclide produced isotopic variations in mantle rocks -- The Lunar surface and Late Heavy Bombardment concept -- Models of continental growth and destruction -- Plate boundary interactions through geologic history -- Hadean Jack Hills zircon geochemistry -- Hadean zircons elsewhere in the Solar System -- Proposed sources of Hadean zircons -- Could the Hadean eon have been habitable?- Morpho- and chemo-fossil evidence for the appearance of life -- Collectanea.
Abstract: This book consolidates the latest research on the Hadean Eon - the first 500 million years of Earth history - which has permitted hypotheses of early Earth evolution to be tested, including geophysical models that include the possibility of plate tectonic-like behavior. These new observations challenge the longstanding Hadean paradigm – based on no observational evidence - of a desiccated, lifeless, continent-free wasteland in which surface petrogenesis was largely due to extraterrestrial impacts. The eon was termed “Hadean” to reflect such a hellish environment. That view began to be challenged in 2001 as results of geochemical analyses of greater than 4 billion year old zircons from Australia emerged. These data were consistent with the zircons forming in a world much more similar to today than long thought and interpreted to indicate that sediment cycling was occurring in the presence of liquid water. This new view leaves open the possibility that life could have emerged shortly after Earth accretion. The epistemic limitations under which the old paradigm persisted are closely examined. The book is principally designed as a monograph but has the potential to be used as a text for advanced graduate courses on early Earth evolution.

Description: Marine cloud brightening (MCB) aims to increase the albedo of low-lying marine clouds by the introduction of additional sea salt aerosol particles (SSA) increasing the population of cloud condensation nuclei which activate to form cloud droplets. The outcomes of this intervention depend on the size and hygroscopicity of the introduced SSA and meteorological conditions. SSA that are too small or too large are both speculated to reduce the magnitude of the desired net albedo increase, or may even reduce albedo. The ideal SSA size distribution is subject to debate however literature suggests dry diameters in the range of 60-1000nm may be effective. Current technologies produce a distribution of SSA particles sizes, rather than the monomodal size originally proposed for MCB. We have studied numerous nozzle technologies to continuously, efficiently and effectively produce sufficient quantities of SSA from sea water. Size distributions and production rates of these various nozzle technologies from laboratory data tests will be presented and will be compared to data from a campaign on the southern Great Barrier Reef (Feb-April 2023). Data from this campaign was measured from an aircraft, drones and on the surface from a research ship following another vessel containing the spraying apparatus. The implications for the effectivity of MCB due to changes in size distribution with distance and altitude from the spraying source will discussed. This work was undertaken as part of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program, funded by the partnership between the Australian Governments Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

Description: We investigated the efficiency of the effervescent atomization technique in generating sea salt aerosol (SSA) particles to act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and to modify cloud microphysical properties. The data were collected during Jan-Feb 2022 and Feb-Mar 2023 (currently in progress) on the RV Magnetic Research Vessel in the Great Barrier Reef. The CCN supersaturation spectra (CCN(S)) for S ranging from 0.1%-0.7% and aerosol particle size distributions measured for unperturbed/perturbed conditions over the Reef are analyzed. Two adiabatic parcel models are used to simulate the effect of additional SSA particles on cloud properties, assuming local thermodynamical conditions. Our preliminary results from simulations show that the additional SSA particles increase the number concentration of drops by a factor of ~ 2-3 at cloud bases (depending on CCN assumption for model initiation and updraft speeds at cloud bases). Compared with background conditions, the additional drops have the practical effect of warm rain suppression and an increase of cloud albedo of about 10-20% at cloud depths of 400 m (typical height of cloud tops of marine stratocumulus). Furthermore, comparison between model simulations and in situ measurements with aerosol and cloud probes on board a research aircraft are described (currently under analysis). This work was undertaken as part of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program, funded by the partnership between the Australian Governments Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

Description: Socio‐economic scenarios such as the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) have been widely used to analyze global change impacts, but representing their diversity is a challenge for the analytical tools applied to them. Taking Great Britain as an example, we represent a set of stakeholder‐elaborated UK‐SSP scenarios, linked to climate change scenarios (Representative Concentration Pathways), in a globally‐embedded agent‐based modeling framework. We find that distinct model components are required to account for divergent behavioral, social and societal conditions in the SSPs, and that these have dramatic impacts on land system outcomes. From strong social networks and environmental sustainability in SSP1 to land consolidation and technological intensification in SSP5, scenario‐specific model designs vary widely from one another and from present‐day conditions. Changes in social and human capitals reflecting social cohesion, equality, health and education can generate impacts larger than those of technological and economic change, and comparable to those of modeled climate change. We develop an open‐access, transferrable model framework and provide UK‐SSP projections to 2080 at 1 km2 resolution, revealing large differences in land management intensities, provision of a range of ecosystem services, and the knowledge and motivations underlying land manager decision‐making. These differences suggest the existence of large but underappreciated areas of scenario space, within which novel options for land system sustainability could occur.
Description: Key Points: A national‐scale agent‐based model is developed to represent paired climatic and socio‐economic scenarios in the land system. Key scenario characteristics relate to forms of human behavior, interactions and societal preferences. Large differences emerge between scenarios in terms of land management intensities, ecosystem service provision and land sparing.
