Description: The evolution and state of geological structure at Earth's surface is best understood with an accurate characterization of the subsurface. Here we present seismic tomographic images of the Italian lithosphere based on ground motion recordings and characterized by compressional and shear wavespeed structure at remarkable resolution, corresponding to a minimum period of ∼10 s. Enhanced accuracy is enabled by state-of-the-art three-dimensional wavefield simulations in combination with an adjoint-state method. We focus on three primary findings of our model Im25. It highlights the distribution of fluids and gas (CO2) within the Italian subsurface and their correlation with seismicity. It illuminates Mt. Etna volcano and supports the hypothesis of a deep reservoir (∼30 km) feeding a shallower magma-filled intrusive body. Offshore of the eastern Italian coast, it reveals that the Adriatic plate is made of two distinct microplates, separated by the Gargano deformation zone, indicating a complex lithosphere and tectonic evolution.

Description: We present the commented transcription of three rare articles published in 19091910 by Father Atto Maccioni o.f.m. This friar is one of the least known among the many ecclesiastics who cultivated seismology from the 18th century onwards. Maccioni, from 1908 to 1926, managed a seismic observatory at the Sienese convent of the Osservanza. He devised an “Avvisatore”: a device equipped with a modified coherer with respect to those adopted in radiotelegraphic communications, aimed to detect natural radio signals associated with earthquakes. From the few available results it seems that the scholar obtained positive feedback, but the most interesting aspect of the story is that until now it was generally believed that this kind of research began only quite recently [Warwick, 1982]. On the contrary Maccioni may have been the first ever to study a possible electromagnetic precursor, more than a century ago.

Description: We present to the international scientific community three important works by Father Maccioni adapted into English with several parts literally translated. The investigation into the existence of an electromagnetic (EM) seismic precursor was carried on in Italy in the beginning of the twentieth century and exploited the capabilities of a specifically designed coherer. For several reasons, both the work and the author are widely unknown even in Italy. We think this is likely to be the very first historical case of a study of a seismic precursor of the EM type

Description: The evolution and state of geological structure at Earth’s surface is best understood with an accurate characterization of the subsurface. We present high-resolution seismic tomographic images of tectonic and geological structures of the Italian lithosphere. Enhanced accuracy is enabled by state-of-the-art methods, including three-dimensional wavefield simulations in combination with an adjoint-state method. The procedure iteratively improves an initial 3D traveltime tomography model of the region using full waveforms from 163 earthquakes recorded by 412 stations. Model Im25, resulting from 25 iterations, characterizes the subsurface structure in terms of compressional and shear wavespeeds at a resolution corresponding to a minimum period ~10 s. We discuss three primary findings of Im25 model: a) images of the lithospheric structure in Central Italy highlight the role of fluids and gas (CO2) and their correlation with seismicity, b) images of Southern Italy illuminates the plumbing system of Mt. Etna volcano, c) images of the Adriatic plate explore its complex lithosphere and tectonic evolution.

Description: This contribution illustrates the state of the art on the development of the multiparametric network in Sicily in the last three years. This region is wellknown for the strong earthquakes (M〉6.5) which struck in historic time. However, the coverage of the seismic network developed in the last decades was not fully optimized to the need of the seismic surveillance. Since 2017, the group belonging to the National Earthquake Observatory (ONT) which operates in Sicily launched a developing plan of the preexisting seismic network in the framework of the project FISR “Sale Operative Integrate e Reti di Monitoraggio del futuro: l’INGV 2.0 (S.O.I.R.)”. Such update will end by the next years thanks to the project “GRINT Italian Research Infrastructure for Geosciences” in the framework of the “Programma Operativo Nazionale” (PON) of the Italian Ministry for the University and Research. This plan envisages both the upgrade of monitoring systems in the already existing nodes, and the integration of new nodes. The main objective is to build a multiparametric network which integrates the main seismic network, with the monitoring of other geophysical signals through the implementation of other sensors: accelerometers, geodetic GPS, radon detectors, and corner reflectors. We also illustrate the plan for the realization of a redundant network which could support the tasks of the main infrastructure in case of failure of the latter. Finally, we present some experimental urbanscale networks which in the future could support the main infrastructure.

Description: We present the results of an experiment taking place inside the geophysical museum of Rocca di Papa (Rome, Italy), where the high radon levels detected might pose a risk to the health of workers and of the public audience. As a first step towards the mitigation of potential exposure risk, four active sensors were installed at different floors of the building, in order to continuously monitor not only radon exhalation from the soil but also its transport from the ground up to elevated floors. Collecting more than three years of data of radon concentration enables us to identify fluctuations over both short and seasonal scales and to elucidate the relation between radon variations and changes of internal temperature and relative humidity. The analysis of such dataset reveals how the healthiness of indoor environments in terms of radon concentration is controlled by a number of factors, including the environmental conditions and the use of heating and ventilation systems. Finally, the continuous radon monitoring at different levels of the building provides a unique chance to trace the vertical radon diffusion, allowing to make a first-order estimate of upward radon velocity.

Description: Hypothesis on the presence of liquid water on the Martian surface under current climatic conditions. --- Ipotesi sulla presenza di acqua liquida sulla superficie di Marte alle attuali condizioni climatiche.
Description: We propose a hypothesis to explain the erosive phenomenon of Martian gullies under current climatic conditions. This model is consistent with the morphology and finds support in the characteristic geographic diffusion of the gullies, which seem to avoid exposure to the sun and the hottest latitudes. We hypothesize a transient flow of spring water fed by melting permafrost which can occur only in certain latitudes and altitudes, with seasonal variability and for a very short time. Furthermore, this phenomenon can only occur in certain ranges of temperature and pressure, therefore when particular and sporadic weather conditions allow it. For this reason, we propose to call it weather-springing water (WSW).
