Notes: Abstract A model for the human eye-movement mechanism is derived. The derivation is based on a literature search directed toward identifying and mathematically describing each component through physiological and anatomical considerations. It is felt that although certain parameter values may not be exactly correct (for the data were taken from a wide variety of animals), we can place a great deal of confidence in the configuration.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Optisch schwarze Kohlenwasserstoff-Filme werden unter wäßrigem Medium aus Lösungen von Isosorbidestern, Phospholipiden und Phospholipiden+Cholesterol inn-Decane gebildet.
Notes: Summary Optically black hydrocarbon films may be formed under aqueous media from solutions of isosorbide esters, phospholipids, and phospholipids+cholesterol inn-decane. The thickness of these films is known from optical and electrical capacitance measurements, but the determination of their molecular composition presents difficulties. The present communication examines and applies methods based on surface tension measurements. For films stabilized by soluble molecules we can use, by direct or indirect means, theGibbs adsorption isotherm. For films stabilized by insoluble molecules (suc as some phospholipids) another approach is possible. The compositions of the black films, determined by these methods, are given.

Notes: Abstract The flagellum of the obligate chemolithotrophThiobacillus thiooxidans was found to retain its integrity and function under environmental conditions that characterize it as among the most stable of alloplasmatic structures. Although a simple, presumably unsheathed organelle approximately 17 mµ in diameter, it is operationally active at a hydrogen ion concentration measured as low as pH 0.6. It was found to resist 1 hr exposures at 37 C to 6m urea, 10m acetamide, 1n H2SO4, 2°o trypsin, and heating to 70 C for 45 min at pH 5.0. It was, however, destroyed after 1 hr in 10n H2SO4 at room temperature. In addition, the flagellum can be synthesized at pH 1.1, but only in the presence of sulfur. The synthesis requires a longer time than in chemoorganotrophic cubacteria.

Notes: Summary Spirodela oligorrhiza grown in sterile culture was able to use urea as sole source of nitrogen but only when the pH of the culture medium was below 4.3. Plants inoculated into urea media at pH 6.4 initially made little growth and became nitrogen-deficient in appearance and composition although they contained about 100 μgrams of urea per gram fresh weight of tissue. After a period the pH of the medium usually fell below 4.3 and growth commenced. Growth with other compounds, e.g. ammonium, nitrate or allantoin, as sources of nitrogen was not similarly affected by the pH of the culture medium. Urease activity could always be detected in the tissues of Spirodela oligorrhiza growing on urea. Plants with little or no urease activity soon developed significant activity when inoculated into urea media at pH 4.0. When the pH of the medium was higher there was no increase in urease activity and no growth ensued. Plants growing on urea possessed an activity of about 50 milliunits per gram fresh weight of tissue, but if the pH of the medium fell to 3.5 or lower, the activity present rose to 10 times this level. Urease activity also appeared, in the absence of supplied urea, as plants became increasingly nitrogen-deficient.

Notes: Abstract IfR is a strongly hereditary relative homological algebra of Abelian groups which contains the torsion split sequences, then theR-injectives can be completely characterized. IfR is a relative homological algebra with enough projectives and enough injectives, which contains the torsiol split sequences, then equivalent conditions forR to be strongly hereditary are given.
