    Description: During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), a very cold and dry period around 26.5–19 kyr BP, permafrost was widespread across Europe. In this work, we explore the possible benefit of using regional climate model data to improve the permafrost representation in France, decipher how the atmospheric circulation affects the permafrost boundaries in the models, and test the role of ground thermal contraction cracking in wedge development during the LGM. With these aims, criteria for possible thermal contraction cracking of the ground are applied to climate model data for the first time. Our results show that the permafrost extent and ground cracking regions deviate from proxy evidence when the simulated large-scale circulation in both global and regional climate models favours prevailing westerly winds. A colder and, with regard to proxy data, more realistic version of the LGM climate is achieved given more frequent easterly winds conditions. Given the appropriate forcing, an added value of the regional climate model simulation can be achieved in representing permafrost and ground thermal contraction cracking. Furthermore, the model data provide evidence that thermal contraction cracking occurred in Europe during the LGM in a wide latitudinal band south of the probable permafrost border, in agreement with field data analysis. This enables the reconsideration of the role of sand-wedge casts to identify past permafrost regions.

    Notes: Abstract A study was conducted to determine the fatigue life-limiting parameters in E-glass fibre-reinforced vinyl esters. Because of the viscoelastic nature of fibreglass composites and the adiabatic heating during rapid fatigue cycling, the cyclic frequency has a significant effect on the fatigue resistance of the composites. For these same reasons, creep phenomena must also be considered in rationalizing fatigue characteristics of the materials. The surface condition of the composite, stress level, curing condition, and the surface integrity of fibreglass were also found to alter the fatigue behaviour of fibreglass composites.

Cet article décrit des études montrant qu'il est possible de mettre au point un système de lutte intégree. Des études intensives sur les fluctuations de populations des ravageurs desCitrus ont été réalisées en 1973 et 1974. Sur les arbres non traités la recrudescence d'activité dePanonychus citri McGregor observée en, 1973, a décliné fortement par suite de l'activité d'Oligota yasumatsui Kistner (Staphylinidae) et d'autres prédateurs pour se maintenir à de faibles densités durant tout le reste de la saison. Une multiplication minime a été enrayée apparemment de la même façon en 1974. Avec, des taux de parasitisme négligeables il y a eu une augmentation graduelle du nombre deCeroplastes rubens Maskell qui est probablement le ravageur clé. Dans un verger privé recevant 7 à 8 traitements annuels les populations deP. citri étaient plus fortes à la fin de chaque saison que sur les arbres non traités.Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton attaquait la poussée de sève estivale avec la même intensité dans les vergers traités, et non traités, où nul parasite n'était observé. Les autres ravageurs desCitrus observés ne présentaient que peu d'importance et beaucoup furent fréquemment parasités. Dans une expérience réalisée en 1973, des applications sur les troncs de monocrotophos ne sont pas venues à bout deP. citri et deP. citrella. Le rythme des poussées de sève se décompose en une forte poussée de sève printanière suivie d'une 2e plus faible en été.
    Notes: Abstract Research on Korean citrus pests has received little attention in the past. This paper describes studies suggesting that an integrated control system is feasible. Population fluctuations of citrus insects were studied intensively in 1973 and 1974. In unsprayed trees a population outbreak ofPanonychus citri (Mc Gregor) in 1973 declined sharply following the activity ofOligota yasumatsui Kistner (Staphylinidae) and other predators, to remain at low densities for the rest of the season. In 1974 a smaller outbreak was apparently again checked by predators. With negligible rates of parasitism there was a gradual rise in the numbers ofCeroplastes rubens Maskell which is probably a key pest. In a farmer's grove receiving 7–8 annual sprays,P. citri populations were higher at the end of each season than in unsprayed trees.Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton severely attacked the summer flush in sprayed and unsprayed groves equally, no parasitism being observed. Other citrus pests observed were unimportant and many were frequently parasitized. In an experiment in 1973, trunk applications of monocrotophos did not controlP. citri orP. citrella. Flushing rhythm consists of a heavy spring flush followed by a 2nd lighter flush in summer.

    Notes: Cation loss and hemolysis of various mammalian red cells suspended in isotonic non-electrolyte media were investigated. Sucrose buffered with 10 mM Tris-Hepes, pH 7.4 was used as the non-permeable non-electrolyte. Mammals from which the red cells were derived include the human, guinea pig, rat, rabbit, newborn calf, newborn piglet and pig, all of which contain K as the predominant cation species (HK type) and the dog, cat, sheep and cow, all of which possess Na as the predominant cation species (LK type). Of HK cells, a rapid efflux of K takes place from humans, rats and guinea pigs. Of LK type cells, the dog and cat exhibit an augmented membrane permeability to Na. The governing factors which influence cation permeability are the change in pH, temperature, and ionic strength. In response to increase in pH, the red cells of humans, dogs and cats become more permeable to cations, whereas the red cells of rat and rabbit are unaffected. In response to increase in temperature, HK type cells exhibit augmented K efflux, while the Na loss from the dog and cat cells manifest a well-defined maximum at near 37°C. In all cases, a small substitution of sucrose by an equal number of osmoles of salts results in a dramatic decrease in cation loss. By contrast, the red cells of the rabbit, newborn calf, adult cow, newborn piglet, adult pig and sheep display no discernible increase in ion-permeability under the conditions alluded to above. In some species including the newborn calf, dog and cat, an extensive hemolysis occurs usually within an hour in isotonic buffered sucrose solution. The osmolarity of sucrose solution affects these cells differently in that as the osmolarity increases from 200-500 mM, hemolytic rates of the calf and dog reach a saturation near 300 mM sucrose, whereas the hemolytic rate of the cat decreases progressively. Common features pertaining to this hemolysis are (1) the intracellular alkalinization process; and (2) the diminution of the cell volume which take place prior to and onset of hemolysis. SITS, a potent anion transport inhibitor, completely protects the cells from hemolysis by inhibiting chloride flux and the concomitant rise in intracellular pH.

    Description: We report the concurrent observations of F-region plasma changes and field-aligned currents (FACs) above isolated proton auroras (IPAs) associated with electromagnetic ion cyclotron Pc1 waves. Key events on March 19, 2020 and September 12, 2018 show that ground magnetometers and all-sky imagers detected concurrent Pc1 wave and IPA, during which NOAA POES observed precipitating energetic protons. In the ionospheric F-layer above the IPA zone, the Swarm satellites observed transverse Pc1 waves, which span wider latitudes than IPA. Around IPA, Swarm also detected the bipolar FAC and localized plasma density enhancement, which is occasionally surrounded by wide/shallow depletion. This indicates that wave-induced proton precipitation contributes to the energy transfer from the magnetosphere to the ionosphere.

    Description: One of the most fundamental questions in ecology is how many species inhabit the Earth. However, due to massive logistical and financial challenges and taxonomic difficulties connected to the species concept definition, the global numbers of species, including those of important and well-studied life forms such as trees, still remain largely unknown. Here, based on global ground-sourced data, we estimate the total tree species richness at global, continental, and biome levels. Our results indicate that there are ∼73,000 tree species globally, among which ∼9,000 tree species are yet to be discovered. Roughly 40% of undiscovered tree species are in South America. Moreover, almost one-third of all tree species to be discovered may be rare, with very low populations and limited spatial distribution (likely in remote tropical lowlands and mountains). These findings highlight the vulnerability of global forest biodiversity to anthropogenic changes in land use and climate, which disproportionately threaten rare species and thus, global tree richness.

    Description: The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) is one of the most recognized global patterns of species richness exhibited across a wide range of taxa. Numerous hypotheses have been proposed in the past two centuries to explain LDG, but rigorous tests of the drivers of LDGs have been limited by a lack of high-quality global species richness data. Here we produce a high-resolution (0.025° × 0.025°) map of local tree species richness using a global forest inventory database with individual tree information and local biophysical characteristics from ~1.3 million sample plots. We then quantify drivers of local tree species richness patterns across latitudes. Generally, annual mean temperature was a dominant predictor of tree species richness, which is most consistent with the metabolic theory of biodiversity (MTB). However, MTB underestimated LDG in the tropics, where high species richness was also moderated by topographic, soil and anthropogenic factors operating at local scales. Given that local landscape variables operate synergistically with bioclimatic factors in shaping the global LDG pattern, we suggest that MTB be extended to account for co-limitation by subordinate drivers.
