Description / Table of Contents: Summary A report is made about a case of polymelie (pygomelie) in red fox. The malformation is illustrated with photographs, an X-ray, and a reconstructed skeleton. The additional appendage begins at the pelvis; the bones, often greatly reduced, are described. Mention is made of the occurrence of accessory extremities at the same place in man, cattle and roe deer. The causes of the polymelie are not known.

Notes: Abstract TheΒ- andγ-radiations of98Zr and98m, g Nb have been investigated employing scintillation and semiconductor spectrometers and coincidence techniques. Sources of98Nb were produced by the98Mo(n, p)98Nb reaction, sources of98Zr by fission of235U with thermal neutrons applying chemical separations. For98Zr, a half-life of 30.7±0.4 sec and aQ β-value of 2.3±0.2 MeV were obtained, for the98Nb isomers, half-lives of 2.86±0.06 sec and 51.3±0.4 min, andQ β-values of 4.8±0.2 MeV and 4.5±0.2 MeV, respectively. Noγ-rays were observed in the decay of98Zr. The decay of 2.9 sec98Nb was found to involve 11γ-ray transitions. In the decay of 51 min98Nb, 54γ-transitions were detected. Spin and parity of 1+ and 4− were deduced for the isomeric states of98Nb.

Notes: Abstract Byγ- e K − ande K − -γ TDPAC measurements with the 133 keV–482 keV cascade of181Ta in a polycrystalline beryllium matrix theA 2(e K − )-coefficient of the 482 keV transition was determined as: A2(482e K − )=−0.095±0.015. The theoretical value is 6.0 times larger. A remeasurement of the E2/M1 mixing ratio of the same transition by integralγ- γ angular correlation measurements with a system of three 20 ccm Ge(Li)-detectors gave the result:δ(482)=4.96±0.25. Theα K -coefficient was redetermined as:α K (482)=0.0246±0.0018. From these data the penetration parameter:λ=157±11 is derived and compared with previously published values and theoretical estimates.

Notes: Abstract Integral perturbed angular correlations of the 931-155keVγγ-cascade of188Os in Gd have been measured. With this technique the combined magnetic and electric hyperfine interaction of the 155 keV level of188Os as an impurity in a Gd host has been studied as a function of temperature. The result for the electric field gradient of Os in Gd at 300 K is: $$\left| {V_{zz} \left( {Os:\underline {Gd} } \right)} \right| = \left( {12.8_{ - 1.9}^{ + 3.1} } \right) \cdot 10^{17} {V \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {V {cm^2 }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {cm^2 }}.$$ For the magnetic hyperfine field at 4.2 K the value $$H_{hf} \left( {Os:\underline {Gd} } \right) = - 134\left( {26} \right)kG$$ was obtained. Sign and magnitude of the magnetic hyperfine field suggest the existence of a localized moment of about −0.4 µ B at the site of Os in Gd. With increasing temperature the magnetic hyperfine field decreases much stronger than the magnetization of the host. Possible explanations for this anomalous temperature dependence are discussed.

Notes: Abstract One-dimensional SiGe superlattices with periods ranging from 100 to 800 Å have been deposited on Si substrates by periodically varying the Ge content of a mixed Si1-x Ge x multilayer structure fromx=0 tox=0.15. The deposition was successful, employing and UHV evaporation technique at a substrate temperature of 750°C fulfilling the four conditions: Single crystal growth, no interdiffusion, two-dimensional growth, and pseudomorphic growth. It is shown that mismatch above 8 · 10−3 favours growth by three-dimensional nucleation. The experimentally determined spacing of misfit dislocations is compared with theoretical results obtained by van der Merwe. The pseudomorphic growth behaviour of layers thinner than a critical thickness could be confirmed.

Notes: Abstract Although the practice of environmental responsibility will affect aggregate economic growth (as measured by GNP), the burden of this policy at the national level will be modest. On the other hand, the distribution of this responsibility will certainly not impose equal hardship on all waste dischargers. At the present time, however, little substantive information is available on the distributional aspects of environmental controls. This paper examines intraregional assignments of waste treatment responsibility within a natural region--a river basin. Alternative management programs and corresponding effluent taxes are considered. Each program is developed within the general framework of a water quality management model and is designed to minimize the total regional cost of waste treatment subject to program constraints (information availability) and water qualify standards. An assessment of the relative efficiency and equity of these programs is made within a water quality management simulation of the Patuxent River in Maryland.

Notes: Summary The influence of various parameters of fixation and incubation upon the oxidation of DAB by catalase have been analyzed. Crystalline beef liver catalase was fixed with different concentrations of glutaraldehyde and peroxidatic activity was determined spectrophotometrically using DAB as hydrogen donor. Although aldehyde fixation appeared to be important in elicitation of the peroxidatic activity of catalase, the final pigment production after 60 min incubation was optimal with the lowest concentration of glutaraldehyde (1%), after the shortest fixation period (30 min), and at the lowest temperature (5° C) tested. Similarly cytochemical studies with rat kidney sections incubated for 10 min confirmed that the staining of peroxisomes in proximal tubules was strongest after the “mildest” fixation conditions. The pH and the temperature of incubation were closely interrelated, so that at room temperature (25° C) the maximal pigment production was obtained at pH 10.5 but incubation at 45° C gave the strongest staining at pH 8.5. The production of pigment increased with higher DAB concentrations which required larger amounts of H2O2 in the incubation medium. Cytochemical studies on renal peroxisomes were in agreement with these biochemical findings. The observations indicate that there are several options for the localization of catalase depending on the fixation and incubation conditions. Hence, these conditions should be selected according to the tissue and the purpose of the study. Examples for such selective applications are presented.
