Notes: The first successful cryopreservation of Ochromonas danica and Ochromonas malhamensis is reported. The freezing method was consistently reproducible for the former, but not for the latter. Ochromonas danica cultures established from frozen material still could be used as test organisms for assay of thiamin. This is the first report of a protozoon retaining its assay property after being frozen to -196 C.

Notes: For linear programming models the effects of income taxes on the optimal activity levels and the optimal values of the dual variables are considered. Neither a fixed percentage tax nor a progressive tax, based on the net pretax contribution, changes the optimal activity levels. However, the optimal dual variables are changed in value, proportional to the highest tax rate actually in effect.

Notes: The effects of exogenous concentrations of glucose and nitrate on total ethanol extractable phenols and leucoanthocyanins were studied in Paul's Scarlet Rose cells grown in either liquid suspension or solid culture. Aliquots of liquid suspension cultured cells were harvested during logarithmic, early stationary, and late stationary periods of growth for determination of fresh weight, dry weight, total ethanol extractable phenols and leucoanthocyanins. Cells produced phenols during all phases of growth, but at stationary phase, the production was greatest. Increasing concentrations of exogenous glucose in the culture medium resulted in an increased synthesis of total phenols in logarithmic cells, and an increased synthesis of total phenols and leucoanthocyanin in stationary cells. Addition of increased concentrations of exogenous nitrate to the stationary cells grown in suspension culture markedly reduced synthesis of leucoanthocyanins although total phenol synthesis was not significantly affected. Similar observations were made in cells cultured on solid medium in respect to exogenous glucose concentration, however these cells differed from the suspension cultured cells by having increased amounts of total phenol synthesis and decreased synthesis of leucoanthocyanins in the presence of increasing concentrations of exogenous nitrate in the culture medium.

Notes: Pure samples of the antheridiogen of Anemia phyllitidis (AAn) were tested for their ability to affect the growth of dwarf corn (d5) and lettuce seedlings, and to influence α-amylase production by barley half-seeds. Stimulation of dwarf corn growth and barley amylase production was, on a molar basis, from 1/2 to 1/250 that given by GA3. In lettuce, AAn had a synergistic effect with low levels of GA3; alone, AAn was inhibitory or ineffective. Therefore, in addition to having a close chemical resemblance to gibberellin, AAn induces similar, but not identical physiological responses in flowering plants as well as ferns.

Notes: : A graphical procedure for classifying aquifer management strategy is proposed for use as a visual aid. The increasing demand for water, changes in the type of water uses and water sources, and economic consideration indicate that optimal strategies can shift over time. The procedure is described and, as an example, applied to the Tucson Basin. This procedure provides a simple visual tool for nonhydrologists, demonstrates the importance of water use and source interplay, and allows consideration of the time element in managing ground-water resources.
