Notes: Abstract The duality theorem of linear programming is used to prove several results on convex optimization. This is done without using separating hyerplane theorems.

Notes: Abstract An investigation was made into an illness episode characterized by cholinesterase depression and cholinergic symptoms reported among 118 field workers harvesting grapes treated with Torak® (dialifor) and Zolone® (phosalone) in a vineyard near Madera, California. Dialifor had been applied at the rate of 1.0 pound per acre in 30 gallons of water between 15 and 40 days earlier using a Kinkelder air blast sprayer. Dissipation studies in an earlier study in Soledad, California, using concentrated spray resulted in initial dislodgeable residues of 2.1 ug/cm2 with a half-life of 14 to 15 days. A similar level of dislodgeable residue resulted at the time of application in the vineyard at Madera. Dislodgeable residues as high as 0.7 ug/cm2 were encountered by workers at the time of entry with most residues being in the range of 0.11 to 0.45 ug/cm2. Residue of dialifor on the foliage in 36 other grape vineyards in the San Joaquin Valley were determined at the time of harvest and were shown to be 0.13 ug/cm2 or less. In four of the 36 vineyards, blood was obtained from workers harvesting grapes. None of the field workers had blood cholinesterase values outside control values. The investigation indicated that with initial dislodgeable residues of dialifor as high as 2.3 ug/cm2, a period of at least 65 days is required before a possibly safe level of something less than 0.06 ug/cm2 is reached. The analysis of the residues in the 36 other vineyards indicated that the initial deposits and/ or the half-life of dialifor varied considerably throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Because of this variation, the use of reentry intervals for dialifor may require replacement by on-site residue tests prior to entry. The results indicated that phosalone residues were not responsible for the illness in the field workers.

Notes: Abstract A number of optically active amino acids, both in the solid state and as sodium or hydrochloride salts in aqueous solution, have been exposed to ionizing radiation from a 3000 Ci60Co γ-ray source to see if radioracemization might accompany their well-known radiolysis. γ-Ray doses causing 55–68% radiolysis of solid amino acids typically engendered 2–5% racemization, while aqueous solutions of the sodium salts of amino acids which underwent 53–66% radiolysis showed 5–11% racemization. Amino acid hydrochloride salts in aqueous solution, on the other hand, showed little or no radioracemization accompanying their radiolysis. Both radiolysis, and radioracemization were roughly proportional to γ-ray dose in the range studied (1–36×106 rads). Mechanisms for the radioracemization of amino acids in the solid state and as aqueous sodium salts are discussed, and the absence of radioracemization for aqueous hydrochloride salts is rationalized. Isovaline, a non-protein amino acid which has been isolated from the Murchison meteorite, contains no α-hydrogen atom and is therefore incapable of racemizationvia the chemical mechanisms by which ordinary amino acids racemize. Nevertheless, isovaline suffers radioracemization in the solid state to an extent comparable to that shown by ordinary amino acids, as do its sodium and hydrochloride salts in the solid state. The sodium salt of isovaline in aqueous solution, however, fails to racemize during its radiolysis. Several implicaitons of the newly described phenomenon of radiomization are pointed out for the fields of geochemistry and cosmochemistry.

Notes: Abstract During 1975, data was collected on the current and projected future levels of employment and training for nuclear-related technicians in the twelve western states. Survey questionnaires were mailed to over 2600 organizations; 79 percent of these responded to the data request. Inquiries to a 20 percent sample of the non-respondents indicates the survey accounts for approximately 95 percent of the total nuclear-related technician employment in the western states. As of January 1975, over 16, 800 nuclear-related technicians were employed in the western states. By late 1977, the total employment is projected to reach 22,300, a growth rate of ten percent per year over the next three years. Total additional demand (new positions plus replacement for attrition) is projected at 15 to 20 percentper year. Manpower shortages are projected for several types of research and production nuclear-related technicians. Excesses of manpower are projected for several types of nuclear medical and health-related technicians.

Notes: Summary A technique is described for preparing detailed sea surface temperature analyses for large ocean areas utilizing injection temperature observations from commercial ships. The inadequacies of analyses based on averaged data are discussed, as well as some of the difficulties inherent in contouring scalar fields. Sea surface temperatures are interpreted according to some concepts derived from cross sectional profiles and surface current data. Isotach analyses of mean current drift are considered as flow patterns to aid temperature analysis in areas where data are sparse.
