Notes: Abstract The standard potential of the Zn−Hg (sat)/ZnCl2(M)/AgCl/Ag cell was determined at 25°C using several extrapolation procedures and the value 0.9843 V is proposed for E°. The emf of the Zn−Hg (sat)/ZnCl2(M), salt (M)/AgCl/Ag cell [salt=NaClO4, LiClO4, Mg(ClO4)2, Mg(NO3)2] have been measured at different concentrations of salt. From these data, the mean ionic activity coefficients of ZnCl2 are determined and their variations explained with the aid of Pitzer's treatment. It seems necessary to take into account structure in the ionic cospheres in order to explain the observed variations.

Description: Among the diseases that have been diagnosed for pinnipeds are those caused by fungal agents. Superficial mycoses in fur seals held under controlled environments tend to be recurrent diseases and they may be associated to another etiological agent. Due to this, their control and prevention is important. The goal of this research was to isolate and to identify the causal agent of superficial mycoses found in two species of fur seals Arctocephalus tropicalis and A. gazella, held under controlled environment at theNational Aquarium for more than six years. Samples of hair were obtained and the microorganism was cultured in Agar Dextrosa Sabouraud at normal conditions. The causal agent of these mycoses was isolate and it was identified as belonging to the genus Cephalosporium; although it could not be classified to the specie level. This genus, commonly affects plants and terrestrial mammals, and it has not been described previously for pinnipeds in the world. The pathognomonic sign of Cephalosporium in these fur seals species is the formation of knots in the fur. This microorganism was sensitive to the combination of systemic treatment with Fluconazole (0.5 mg/kg twice daily) and the application of local baths with 2% Copper Sulfate Solution (Cu2SO4) for 14-28 days.

Description: Cyanobacteria oxygenated Earth's atmosphere ~2.4 billion years ago, during the Great Oxygenation Event (GOE), through oxygenic photosynthesis. Their high iron requirement was presumably met by high levels of Fe(II) in the anoxic Archean environment. We found that many deeply branching Cyanobacteria, including two Gloeobacter and four Pseudanabaena spp., cannot synthesize the Fe(II) specific transporter, FeoB. Phylogenetic and relaxed molecular clock analyses find evidence that FeoB and the Fe(III) transporters, cFTR1 and FutB, were present in Proterozoic, but not earlier Archaean lineages of Cyanobacteria. Furthermore Pseudanabaena sp. PCC7367, an early diverging marine, benthic strain grown under simulated Archean conditions, constitutively expressed cftr1, even after the addition of Fe(II). Our genetic profiling suggests that, prior to the GOE, ancestral Cyanobacteria may have utilized alternative metal iron transporters such as ZIP, NRAMP, or FicI, and possibly also scavenged exogenous siderophore bound Fe(III), as they only acquired the necessary Fe(II) and Fe(III) transporters during the Proterozoic. Given that Cyanobacteria arose 3.3–3.6 billion years ago, it is possible that limitations in iron uptake may have contributed to the delay in their expansion during the Archean, and hence the oxygenation of the early Earth.

Description: The spatial and angular emission patterns of artificial and natural light emitted, scattered, and reflected from the Earth at night are far more complex than those for scattered and reflected solar radiation during daytime. In this commentary, we use examples to show that there is additional information contained in the angular distribution of emitted light. We argue that this information could be used to improve existing remote sensing retrievals based on night lights, and in some cases could make entirely new remote sensing analyses possible. This work will be challenging, so we hope this article will encourage researchers and funding agencies to pursue further study of how multi‐angle views can be analyzed or acquired.
Description: Plain Language Summary: When satellites take images of Earth, they usually do so from directly above (or as close to it as is reasonably possible). In this comment, we show that for studies that use imagery of Earth at night, it may be beneficial to take several images of the same area at different angles within a short period of time. For example, different types of lights shine in different directions (street lights usually shine down, while video advertisements shine sideways), and tall buildings can block the view of a street from some viewing angles. Additionally, since views from different directions pass through different amounts of air, imagery at multiple angles could be used to obtain information about Earth's atmosphere, and measure artificial and natural night sky brightness. The main point of the paper is to encourage researchers, funding agencies, and space agencies to think about what new possibilities could be achieved in the future with views of night lights at different angles.
Description: Key Points: Remote sensing using the visible band at night is more complex than during the daytime, especially due to the variety of artificial lights. Views of night lights intentionally taken from multiple angles provide several advantages over near‐nadir or circumstantial view geometries. Night lights remote sensing would benefit from greater consideration of the role viewing geometry plays in the observed radiance.
