Notes: Five experiments were carried out to measure the effects of seed rate and fertilizers on the establishment and early growth of reseeded grass mixtures in the Falkland Islands.Experiments 1 and 2 compared seed rates within the range 7·5-35kg ha−1. Experiment 3 assessed the effects of three levels of each of nitrogen (N), P2O5, K2O and CaCO3 applied as seedbed fertilizers. Experiments 4 and 5 were similar in intent to Experiment 3, but treatments consisted of either nil or a very heavy application of the same fertilizer elements. In all experiments, the grass seed mixtures were sown in late summer after rotavation and burning of Cortaderia pilosa dominant indigenous vegetation on peaty soils. Percentage ground cover was estimated in the following spring and dry matter production through the first year was determined by sample harvests.Initially, heavier seed rates resulted in higher percentage ground cover of sown species, but dry matter production over the season following sowing showed a significant increase only between the 25 and 35 kg ha−1 rates in Experiment 2. The modest levels of seedbed fertilizers applied in Experiment 3 had no significant effect on either percentage ground cover of sown species or dry matter production. Even at the higher levels used in Experiments 4 and 5, only N consistently increased dry matter yields, although a significant positive response was also obtained from CaCO3 in the final harvests. The implications of the results to farmers in the Falkland Islands who may be contemplating reseeding are discussed.

Notes: Gradients of gene expression in the developing fourth leaf of the grass Lolium temulentum L. strain Ba 3081 were investigated using cell-free translation and Northern analysis of RNA extracted from succesive leaf segments. The transition from growth at the leaf base to photosynthesis in the blade was reflected in relative levels of transcripts from the plastid genome (psb A, pet A and rbc L, encoding plastid polypeptides) and nuclear genome (cab and PCR, encoding plastid polypeptides, and histone H3 and PAL encoding extra-plastidic polypeptides). These data combined with information on polypeptide synthesis in vivo indicate that post-transcriptional regulation plays an important part in controlling gene expression in this tissue.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-Derek Fordham in his review of the Navigation Foundation's report Robert E. Peary at the North Pole (Nature 344, 902; 1990) asserts that it contains no new information, only new analysis. We did indeed report little new information but identified a need for competent analysis. For example, we ...

Notes: Abstract On 15 May 1991, a landslide occurred at Gacharage Village in the Murang'a District of Kenya; it buried a house near the toe of a cliff, killing all eight residents in their sleep. The principal determining factors of the slide were a high, mechanically unstable slope of deeply weathered volcanic soil and a high sorption capacity of the surface soil layer. The slide was triggered by rapid saturation of the soil following a heavy downpour. Based on field investigations and laboratory studies, this paper discusses the physical properties and environmental factors that affected slope stability at Murang'a. It also points out the economic and social impact of landslides in the region and suggests remedial measures.

Notes: Abstract The structural changes occurring during the dehydroxylation of kaolinite have been followed using flash calcination to produce kinetically frozen calcines. The percentage of dehydroxylation was varied by changing the furnace residence time or temperature and/or heating speed. These calcination conditions affected the reaction kinetics, but the products depended only on the extent of dehydroxylation. Changes in the position and enthalpy of the endothermic transformation to metakaolinite and the high temperature exothermic reaction of metakaolinite have been followed using Differential Scanning Calorimetry of the flash calcines and related to Thermogravimetry. 27Al magic-angle-spinning NMR spectra, at high magnetic fields and spin rates, enabled the reaction of kaolinite to be monitored and provides new information on the nature of the species formed in the course of dehydration.

Notes: Abstract Extensive cracking of the type known as stack cracking was demonstrated in a cathodically charged X65 microalloyed pipeline steel containing a weldment. It is shown that the formation and propagation of rolling-plane cracks, which constitute the primary stages of the stack cracking, is due to local concentration of hydrogen gas pressure and a lowering of the cohesive strength of a number of interfaces by hydrogen. The characteristic S-shape of individual cracks which occurred during the linking up of cracks was attributed to stress interactions at crack tips and cleavage cracking normal to the rolling plane. An explanation of hydrogen embrittlement fracture is given in terms of electronic state modifications of the steel, including charge polarization.

Notes: Abstract The planar defects associated with deformation in ordered intermetallic compounds namely, the antiphase boundary, superlattice intrinsic stacking fault, and complex stacking fault are non-equilibrium structures corresponding to a state of disorder within the ordered structure of the lattice and therefore affect both the electronic energy states and the Brillouin zone structure. It is possible that a relationship exists between the antiphase boundary energy, γAPB, and the sum of the number of unfilled outermost d-state electrons in the transition metals on which this class of intermetallics is based. If this hypothesis is taken in conjunction with a set of rules for improving ductility in intermetallics proposed previously, a coherent explanation of recently observed ductilities in transition metal-based intermetallics would seem to be feasible.
