Notes: We report the successful growth of quantum wire (QWR) structures of AlxGa1−xAs/ GaAs /AlxGa1−xAs on a V-grooved Al0.3Ga0.7As/GaAs substrate. The samples are studied by photoluminescence spectra. The structures are grown by atmospheric pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The GaAs QWRs are fabricated on a V-grooved Al0.3Ga0.7As/GaAs substrate instead of GaAs substrate. Due to the effect of the Al0.3Ga0.7As layer, a necking area is formed in the side quantum wells (QWLs) near the bottom of the V groove. This results in a reduction of the lateral widths of the QWRs. Also, the luminescence of the QWRs is greatly enhanced in spite of low packing density. It is the first structure made in attempts to produce the quantum-size effects on a V-grooved substrate with non-(111) facets.

Notes: Abstract Protolasts of Bupleurum scorzonerifolium were prepared from stem node-derived embryogenic calli with an enzyeme mixture, in which snailase was a necessary component. Follolwing cell wall regeneration protoplasts divided and directly formed somatic embryos which developed into plantlets. The conditions favorable to direct embryo formation were investigated, and the nature of the callus used for protoplast preparation was found to be a critical factor. The osmotic concentration and the composition of the culture medium including the phytohormone combinations were also important.

Notes: Abstract A comparative study of the affects of graphite morphology and matrix structure on mechanical properties was carried out on spheroidal, compacted and flake graphite irons by a short austenitizing plus austempering treatment. Transformation kinetic data showed that compacted graphite iron had the fastest, spheroidal graphite iron the second and flake graphite iron the slowest austenitizing rate. In spheroidal and compacted graphite irons the strength increased, while ductility decreased, with increasing the amount of bainite in matrix due to prolonging austenitizing time. On the other hand, the increase of bainite structure in the matrix had no significant affect on the mechanical properties of flake graphite iron. Fractographic examinations showed that the fracture surface of spheroidal graphite iron changed from a ductile mode to a brittle mode when its matrix changed from ferrite to bainite dominant. The flake graphite iron ruptured with brittle mode no matter what matrix it had. Compacted graphite iron exhibited an intermediate type of fracture surface. With a short austenitizing plus austempering treatment, the mechanical properties of spheroidal and compacted graphite irons could be improved and extended to a very wide range.

Notes: Abstract We review here the results of our investigations concerning chaotic atomic scattering in the presence of a laser field. Particular emphasis is put on the existence of classical stable resonance structures, induced by the intense laser field, which are embedded in the field-free continuum. We show that phase space structures in the vicinity of a resonance island play an important role in the chaotic scattering behavior and form the basis for a mechanism to enhance the lifetimes of the collisional partners. Quantum calculations, based on a wave packet propagation method, show that quantum solutions are strongly influenced by the classical phase space structures. More specifically, a wave packet is found to spread differently in the regular and chaotic regions; in the latter case it spreads exponentially with time until saturation occurs, defining the saturation time. We also investigate theħ dependence of the spreading rates in both the regular and chaotic regimes. Calculations with an ensemble of classical trajectories are also presented to further illustrate the smoothing effects of varyingħ.

Notes: Abstract We describe the early formation of somatic embryos followed by plant regeneration from protoplasts isolated from an embryogenic wheat cell suspension, which was initiated from small granular (0.2 to 1 mm in size) embryogenic calli. These granular calli formed embryogenic cell suspensions within 20 days in liquid culture, and were selected gradually from young inflorescence-derived nodular embryogenic calli of the winter wheat cv. Kehong 1041. The division frequency of protoplasts was 11 to 16%, and the frequency of differentiation into plants was about 0.001% (number of plants formed divided by the total number of protoplasts plated). About 20% of somatic embryos present in the culture formed directly from protoplast-derived cells within 15 days of cultures.

Notes: A series of rigid rod-like polyspiroacetals bearing flexible side chains was prepared by interfacial polycondensation of 4,4′-(2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro[5,5]undecane-3,9-diyl)diphenol with 2,5-dialkoxy-substituted terephthaloyl dichlorides. The majority of these polymers were soluble in polar solvents like tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethylformamide (DMF), CHCl3, phenol/CCl4 (1 : 1 by vol.) mixtures, etc. The molecular weights ranged from 7 600 to 15 000 and the melting temperature from 182 to 228°C. Both of the above values decreased with increasing length of the side chains. The TG curves revealed 5% weight loss at 350-370°C under N2 gas atmosphere. Wide-angle X-ray diffractograms showed that all of the polymers have considerable crystallinity at room temperature.

Notes: Abstract The reaction of C5H4RLi with FeCl2 gave nine new compounds of Fe(C5H4R)2 [R=C(CH3)2C6H4CH3-p(-m,-o), C6H10C6H5, C(Me)2C6C4OCH3-o, C6H10C6H4CH3-p(,-m,-o), C6H10C6H4OCH3-p]. The compositions of compounds were determined through elementary analysis. The structural determination was made by IR and H2NMR. Mossbauer spectia were taken at room temperature. The IS and QS values are 0.41–0.45mm/s and 2.3–2.5mm/s., respectively. The solid state structure of the complex has been determined by a single crystal x-ray diffraction study, crystal data for Fe[C5H4C(CH3)2C6H5]2: a=17.988(2)A, b=17. 411(2)A, c=7.496(1)A, α=β=90°, r=112.23°, Z=4, monoclinic form, space group C2/c. Our conclusions are: in π-acceptor ligand, the nucleophilic substituents decrease and the electrophilic substituts increase the metal to ligand electron cloud shift, which results in a decrease or an increase in the strength of the coordinate bonds and in the stabilization of the complexes by their steric effect.

Description: Abstract Ecological and social processes of the Spermonde Archipelago, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, have been intensively studied during the Science for the Protection of Indonesian Coastal Ecosystems (SPICE) program. The archipelago is of specific interest to better understand how intensive exploitation of marine resources results in the degradation of reef systems. The projects specifically targeted (1) ecological processes in coral reefs, (2) genetic structure of populations, and (3) social–ecological dynamics relating to resource use, social networks, and governance structures. A modeling component emphasized (4) the integration of different ecological, social, and environmental components. Results indicated that reef resources in the Spermonde Archipelago are intensively exploited and further stressed by pollution effluents from hinterland processes. The lack of alternative livelihoods perpetuates dependencies within the patron–client system of the artisanal fisheries and supports high exploitation and also destructive resource uses. Greater inclusion of local stakeholders in the governance may result in better conservation practices, sustainable resource use, and improved livelihoods for the people.
