Notizen: In this paper the extended interior penalty methods are applied to solve the bolted joint problems of the laminated composite plates. The conventional interior penalty methods have the weak point such that the searches for optimized solution in the neighbourhood of the constraint surfaces are difficult since the values of penalty term in the infeasible domain are infinity. To improve the weak point, the extended interior penalty formulation is proposed. In this work mathematical analysis on the characteristics of the solutions is attempted and the convergence of the penalized solutions is estimated. As a numerical example, first, the case of single bolted joint is solved for a variety of lamination angles of the composite plates. The computed results are compared with the previous works and are proved to agree well. Next the problem of the two bolt holes in series and in parallel are treated in a similar manner. It is concluded that the formulations for the class of the problems by the extended interior penalty methods are mathematically sound and numerically efficient.

Notizen: An improved formulation for spatial stability and free vibration analysis of thin-walled elastic beams is presented by applying Hellinger-Reissner principle and introducing Vlasov's assumption. It includes shear deformation effects due to flexural shear and restrained warping stress, rotary inertia effects and bendirsg-torsional coupling effects due to unsymmetric cross sections. Closed-form solutions for determining flexural-torsional buckling loads and natural frequencies of unsymmetric simply supported beam-columns subjected to eccentric axial force are newiy derived and also, the tangent stiffness matrix and stability functions for symmetric thin-walled beam elements subjected to axial force are presented. In a companion paper,26 these analytic solutions are compared with the finite element solutions according to the increase of shear deformation effects.

Notizen: In a companion paper,1 equations of motion and closed-form solutions for spatial stability and free vibration analysis of shear flexible thin-walled elastic beams were analytically derived from the linearized Hellinger-Reissner principle. In this paper, elastic and geometric stiffness matrices and consistent mass matrix for finite element analysis are evaluated by using isoparametric and Hermitian interpolation polynomials. Isoparametric interpolation functions with 2, 3 and 4 nodes per element are utilized in isoparametric beam elements, and in Hermitian beam elements, the third- and fifth-order Hermitian polynomials including shear deformation effects are newly derived and applied for the calculation of element matrices. In order to verify the validity of the finite element formulation, both analytic and numerical solutions for spatial buckling and free vibration problems including shear effects are presented and compared.

Notizen: An extended kinematic graph concept and a variational-vector calculus approach are employed to develop a new recursive formulation for the dynamic analysis of flexible multibody systems. The extended graph concept introduced defines frames and transformations between frames as nodes and edges, respectively, rather than the more traditional body and joint convention. Kinematic relationships between adjacent flexible bodies are derived, using joint relative co-ordinates and a state vector notation that represents both translational and rotational components of velocity. Deformation kinematics are formulated in terms of modal co-ordinates, under small deformation assumptions. Joint relative co-ordinates are decoupled from deformation modal co-ordinates in both kinematic relations and in the recursive dynamics algorithm, leading to a significant reduction in the dimension of matrices that must be inverted. Dynamic analysis of a flexible closed-loop spatial robot is performed to illustrate the efficiency of the algorithm.

Notizen: The use of inconsistent displacement fields for Mindlin plate elements causes unmatched coefficients to appear in shear strain interpolations. The role of the numerical integration order in relation to these unmatched coefficients, and the existence of optimal stress points are explained through the use of the reduced minimization concept. This concept makes it possible to test whether assumed displacement fields or shear strain fields result in inconsistent strain fields which contain spurious constraints. We have included applications of reduced minimization to the conventional C0-continuous elements, which employ reduced integration, and to quadrilateral Mindlin plate elements of Hinton and Huang to demonstrate how these elements alleviate shear locking.

Notizen: The present paper is concerned with the improvement of a finite element for the analysis of plate bending structures. The element formulation is based upon the Mindlin plate concept. The displacement field of this element is formed by adding non-conforming modes to two rotational displacement components of an 8-node plate element. The element has the requisite numbers of zero eigenvalues associated with rigid body modes to avoid the spurious zero energy mode. It is shown that the results obtained by the element converged to the exact solutions very rapidly as the mesh is refined and exhibited reliable solutions through numerical studies for standard benchmark problems. This element is shown to overcome the shear locking problem completely in a very thin plate situation, even for irregular meshes.

Notizen: The numerical analysis of plane and axially symmetric jet flows of an incompressible inviscid fluid is treated. A new formulation of the variational inequality type is developed from the variational principle associated with jet problems. A successive approximation method is formulated by the combined use of variational inequality and the finite element method. Numerical examples based on the iterative method are presented. The results obtained agree well with those by other methods.

Notizen: By using the field-consistency and least-squares fit concepts, reduced minimization theory is proposed to show the effect of numerical integration on the behaviour of C0-continuous beam elements when the Jacobian is constant within an element. The theory provides a unified viewpoint on the relationship between spurious constraint, the location of optimal sampling points and integration order. The conventional Uniformly Reduced Integration (URI) and Selective Reduced Integration (SRI) are redefined by using reduced minimization theory. We also present numerical reduced minimization theory, which explains the effects of more-than-two-order-lower reduced integration when Gaussian quadrature is employed.

Notizen: A quasi-steady-state, integrated system model describing high temperature heat transfer, solidification and the action of capillarity in the Czochralski crystal growth process is solved by a finite element/Newton method. The numerical analysis couples the calculation of the temperature field in all phases and the determination of the melt/crystal and melt/gas interfaces and the crystal radius free boundaries. The analysis includes conductive heat transfer in the melt, crystal, crucible, pedestal, heater and the surrounding insulation and diffuse-grey radiation, which couples the heat transfer between surfaces, the crystal radius and the melt/gas free boundary through the view factors. Finite element approximations are used to reduce the entire problem to a coupled set of non-linear algebraic equations. These are solved simultaneously by Newton's method with the Jacobian matrix computed by a combination of closed form expressions and finite difference approximations. Quadratic convergence of the Newton iteration is demonstrated along with a factor of four increase in computational efficiency over a successive iteration procedure that decouples the calculation of radiation from the rest of the heat transfer model.

Notizen: A study is conducted of the finite element solution of elliptic partial differential equations on a data parallel computer. A nodal assembly technique is introduced which maps a single node to a single processor. The system of equations is first assembled and then solved in parallel using a conjugate gradient algorithm for unsymmetric, non-positive definite systems. Using this technique and a massively parallel machine, problems in excess of 100k nodes are solved. Results of electromagnetic scattering, governed by the 2-d scalar Helmholtz equation, are presented for both an infinite cylinder and an airfoil cross-section. Solutions are demonstrated for a wide range of object sizes. A summary of performance data is given for a set of test problems.
