Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of N-(4-nitrophenyl)-N-phenylsulfonamide (C18H14N2O4S), a derivative of sulfonamide, has been determined by X-ray diffraction method using CuKα radiation. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space groupP21/n, witha=24.463(1),b=5.745(2),c=11.428(3)Å andβ=94.39(2)°. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by full-matrix least squares to a finalR value of 0.045 with 3032 unique reflections. The dihedral angle between the substituents phenyl ring B and the phenyl A is 94.7(3)°. The S atom is in the usual distorted tetrahedral configuration.

Notes: Summary Triple differential cross-section (TDCS) of hydrogen atom in its metastable (2S) state is studied theoretically by electron and positron impact for coplanar and asymmetric geometry. The final-state wave function in the present model satisfies the asymptotic boundary condition for asymmetric geometry (i.e. fork 1≫k 2). In the absence of experiment, present results are compared with other existing theoretical results. Apart from the double-peaked structure of the TDCS as in ground-state ionization, some interesting secondary structures are found, in conformity with other theories for ionization from 2S state.

Notes: Summary We have studied the Einstein relation of the diffusivity-mobility ratio of the carriers in Bi in accordance with the McClure and Choi, the hybrid, the Cohen, the Lax and the ellipsoidal parabolic energy band models under magnetic quantization, cross-field configuration, quantum wells, electric-field-aided quantum wells, quantum wells under cross-field configuration, quantumwell wires, electrifield-aided quantum well wires and quantum well wires under cross-field configurations, respectively. The Einstein relation varies with various physical variables in different manners which are totally band structure dependent. We have also suggested an experimental method of determining the diffusivity-to-mobility ratio in degenerate materials having arbitrary dispersion laws.

Notes: Summary We study the subband energies in quantum wells and quantum wires in the presence of a parallel magnetic field in non-parabolic semiconductors, on the basis of a generalized dispersion relation considering all types of anisotropies of the energy-band parameters within the framework ofk·p formalism, by formulating the respective electron energy spectra. It is found, by takingn-Cd3As2 as an example, that the subband energies are greater for quantum wires and smaller for quantum wells, respectively. The magnetic field diminishes the above values and the corresponding well-known results for quantum-confined parabolic semiconductors have also been obtained from our generalized expressions under certain limiting conditions.

Notes: Abstract Source resolution and risk apportionment of emission source categories for risk reduction purposes can be used to enhance the Bubble Policy of the Clean Air Act. This is performed by incorporating receptor modeling techniques of factor analysis and chemical mass balances to assess noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic inhalation risks to a target population for certain pollutants coming from major emission source categories in a steel plant air shed. Source resolution, using factor analysis, statistically interprets a “source” from ambient data. By subsequently quantifying risks from identified metal emission sources using chemical mass balances and risk apportionment, a total additive risk from main source contributors in the steel plant is estimated. From this methodology, the Bubble Policy can be enhanced by targeting only main risk sources or by “risk-trading” with minor impact sources to reduce the total risk (if deemed significant) without arbitrarily reducing risk for all sources in an industrial source complex’s “bubble.”

Notes: Abstract Rats were exposed intermittently for 8h per day over 6 days at simulated high altitude of 20 000 feet. One group of altitude-exposed animals was treated with naproxen, a prostaglandin inhibiting drug. Significant reduction in body weight gain was observed in both altitude-exposed and drug-treated altitude-exposed animals compared to the control group. Right and left ventricular weights and weights of the adrenal glands were increased significantly in altitude-exposed and altitude-exposed drug-treated animals. The weight of the spleen was increased significantly in altitude-exposed animals whereas no such increase of splenic weight was observed in drug-treated altitude-exposed group of animals. On the other hand, the weight of the liver was decreased significantly in both cases. In drug-treated altitude-exposed animals, the unaltered splenic weight was thought to be due to inhibition of the erythropoietic activity.

Notes: Abstract Gibberellic acid (GA3) and abscisic acid (ABA) regulate α-amylase production in aleurone tissue of the barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) grain during germination. Since α-amylase is a Ca2+-containing protein that is synthesized on the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER), we investigated the possibility that GA3 and ABA regulate the flux of Ca2+ into the ER of aleurone cells. Membrane vesicles were isolated from GA3- and ABA-treated aleurone layers to characterize the effect of these hormones on calcium transport (CaT) activity as measured by the uptake of 45CaCl2 in vitro. We found that ABA and GA3 greatly alter the relative amounts of CaT activity in ER and tonoplast (TP) membrane fractions. Treatment with GA3 results in CaT being associated primarily with the ER, whereas treatment with ABA results in roughly equal amounts of CaT in ER and TP. Moreover, we found that ABA prevents or reverses the GA3-induced increase in CaT in the ER. The effects of ABA and GA3 on CaT in the ER require several hours to develop, and the effects of these hormones on CaT cannot be brought about by adding the hormones to membranes in vitro. In order to determine whether the in-vitro measurements of CaT reflect changes that occur in vivo we measured the Ca2+ content of isolated ER, measured Ca2+ transport into aleurone layers, and examined differences in the ability of ER proteins from GA- and ABA-treated layers to bind Ca2+. Our results indicate that GA3 increases and ABA decreases both Ca2+ flux into the ER and the amount of calcium that accumulates in the ER of barley aleurone cells in vivo.

Notes: Summary We report on the regeneration of fertile Indica rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants from protoplasts isolated from scutellar tissue of immature embryos. The average yields of protoplasts after purification ranged from 2.8 × 105 to 3.5 × 105 protoplasts per fifty embryos. Protoplasts developed rapidly to colonies when cultured in maltose containing medium using the nurse culture method. Upto 146 or 39 visible colonies per 106 protoplasts were obtained for the varieties Basmati 370 and IR43 respectively. Of two basal culture media compared, R2 medium containing 3 mg l−1 kinetin, 1 mg l−1 naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), 30 g l−1 maltose and 3.0 g l−1 agarose was found to be more effective in producing green plants. All scutellum protoplast-derived plants that were transferred to the greenhouse survived and were fertile.

Notes: Summary Four polycondensates have been prepared from 9,10-anthracene-diol and succinic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, pyromellitic dianhydride and 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride. Thermal stabilities, dielectric and conductivity characteristics of these condensates indicate that these properties are influenced by the nature of the anhydride moiety.
