    Notes: Survey data collected during a grassland-recording investigation showed a strong positive correlation between nitrogen input and the output of utilized starch equivalent per acre. At the levels of output covered, sward type was not very important in relation to total yield. Herbage species were important for other reasons and the choice of seeds mixtures should be determined by factors such as earliness and lateness of growth and resistance to disease and drought. The survey showed that well-managed ley and permanent pasture are both capable of producing at a high level. A disturbing feature of the results was the low production of most spring resowings, primarily as a result of poor management. Although the records were obtained from an above-average group of farms, the results have general application. Potential responses to fertilizers may be even greater on less intensive farms, especially with regard to phosphate and potash. However, the level of production of a field will always depend finally on the level of management exercised by the farmer himself.

    Description: The Ross Ice Shelf (RIS) is host to a broadband, multimode seismic wavefield that is excited in response to atmospheric, oceanic and solid Earth source processes. A 34-station broadband seismographic network installed on the RIS from late 2014 through early 2017 produced continuous vibrational observations of Earth's largest ice shelf at both floating and grounded locations. We characterize temporal and spatial variations in broadband ambient wavefield power, with a focus on period bands associated with primary (10–20 s) and secondary (5–10 s) microseism signals, and an oceanic source process near the ice front (0.4–4.0 s). Horizontal component signals on floating stations overwhelmingly reflect oceanic excitations year-round due to near-complete isolation from solid Earth shear waves. The spectrum at all periods is shown to be strongly modulated by the concentration of sea ice near the ice shelf front. Contiguous and extensive sea ice damps ocean wave coupling sufficiently so that wintertime background levels can approach or surpass those of land-sited stations in Antarctica.

    Description: Observations of teleseismic earthquakes using broadband seismometers on the Ross Ice Shelf (RIS) must contend with environmental and structural processes that do not exist for land-sited seismometers. Important considerations are: (1) a broadband, multi-mode ambient wavefield excited by ocean gravity wave interactions with the ice shelf; (2) body wave reverberations produced by seismic impedance contrasts at the ice/water and water/seafloor interfaces and (3) decoupling of the solid Earth horizontal wavefield by the sub-shelf water column. We analyze seasonal and geographic variations in signal-to-noise ratios for teleseismic P-wave (0.5–2.0 s), S-wave (10–15 s) and surface wave (13–25 s) arrivals relative to the RIS noise field. We use ice and water layer reverberations generated by teleseismic P-waves to accurately estimate the sub-station thicknesses of these layers. We present observations consistent with the theoretically predicted transition of the water column from compressible to incompressible mechanics, relevant for vertically incident solid Earth waves with periods longer than 3 s. Finally, we observe symmetric-mode Lamb waves generated by teleseismic S-waves incident on the grounding zones. Despite their complexity, we conclude that teleseismic coda can be utilized for passive imaging of sub-shelf Earth structure, although longer deployments relative to conventional land-sited seismometers will be necessary to acquire adequate data.

    Notes: Many felids are threatened by loss of habitat, lack of genetic diversity, and over-exploitation. The reintroduction of bobcats (Felis rufus) to Cumberland Island, Georgia provided an opportunity to reintroduce a mid-sized felid without the concern for species survival that is paramount with endangered species. We captured bobcats from the coastal plain region of Georgia, briefly held them in captivity, and released them on Cumberland Island. We describe and evaluate the protocols and techniques used to accomplish the reintroduction. Future reintroductions of felids should consider the problem of post-release dispersal, although our island was relatively isolated and inhibited dispersal. Also, any reintroduction effort should invest effort and resources into post-release monitoring of the population. Empirical knowledge about the effects of spatial distribution, genetics, population dynamics, especially mechanisms of population regulation, behavior, and environmental conditions on the viability of populations is critical to the conservation of endangered species. Future research of the bobcats on Cumberland Island will be able to address aspects of the population and genetic dynamics of a small, insular felid population.

A segment of ribosomal DNA, about 1,350 base pairs long, was amplified from the microsporidian species Encephalitozoon hellem, isolated from AIDS patients, and Encephalitozoon cuniculi. the amplified DNA segment extends from position 530 in the small ribosomal RNA subunit to position 580 in the large ribosomal RNA subunit. A comparison of sequence data from this region for Encephalitozoon hellem and Encephalitozoon cuniculi shows relatively high sequence similarity, supporting the placement of these two organisms in the same genus. At the same time, sequence differences between the two organisms confirm that they are not the same species. Three separate isolates of E. hellem were sequenced in the highly variable intervening spacer region. the sequence was identical for all three isolates. Within the amplified DNA segment, regions were sequenced which yield highly variable, moderately variable and highly conserved sequence information, appropriate for comparison with other species in the phylum Microspora at all taxonomic levels. We suggest that sequence data from these regions be included in future species descriptions for the purposes of species identification and phylogenetic analysis. Restriction digests of the amplified region are presented and give a rapid method for distinguishing between the two Encephalitozoon species.

Earlier experiments suggested that the species of Haemoproteus which infects English wood-pigeons (Columba p. palumbus) and is transmitted by the hippoboscid dipteran fly Ornithomya avicularia, was unable to infect Columba livia domestica, a host of H. columbae. This has now been confirmed by the injection of sporozoites into two pairs of pigeons, one of each species; in both experiments the C. palubus developed parasitemia while the C. livia did not. It has also been shown that this species of Haemoproteus can complete sporogony in a small proportion (2/73) of Pseudolynchla canariensis, the vector of H. columbae.

    Notes: A cultivar of Italian ryegrass (Bb 2067), specifically bred for high magnesium content, was assessed for its efficacy in alleviating the incidence of hypomagnesaemia in lactating ewes. Pasture and animal management was regulated to maximize the potential for the development of hypomagnesaemia. The incidence of clinical hypomagnesaemia in ewes grazing the control pasture (cv. RvP) was 21% within the first 10 days and this was accompanied by a significant fall of 35% in serum magnesium concentration. The incidence in ewes grazing the high magnesium cultivar was only 2·5% and there was no significant change in the serum magnesium concentration.The mean magnesium content of Bb 2067 herbage (1·45 gkg DM-1) was 48% higher than cv. RvP (0·93 g kg DM-1) while calcium and phosphorus were 15% and 30% higher. The mean dry matter intake of ewes grazing Bb 2067 was higher than that of ewes grazing RvP, and although the difference was not statistically significant there were significantly increased intakes of magnesium, calcium and phosphorus for ewes grazing Bb 2067 compared with RvP. Ewes grazing Bb 2067 ingested more than the recommended allowance of magnesium and were close to sufficiency for calcium and phosphorus, while those grazing RvP were in serious deficit for all three minerals.There was no significant difference in the ewe body weight loss between the treatments but lamb liveweight gain was significantly greater on the Bb 2067 pastures compared with those on cv. RvP.It was concluded that the high magnesium grass provided an effective means of controlling hypomagnesaemia under grazing despite the extreme predisposing conditions imposed in this trial.

    Notes: Swards based on a mixture of SI 70 tall fescue and S215 meadow fescue were very early in spring, gave high yields for conservation in mid-season and, rested from mid-August, gave good grazing in November-December. Under this treatment, the tall fescue assumed dominance, and the swards were persistent and remained productive. The digestibility of the tall fescue swards was always higher than that of swards based on cocksfoot with which they were compared. During spring and autumn the former sward was better grazed by stock, but the position was reversed in mid-summer. Cattle grazing tall-fescue-dominant swards made better liveweight gains than those grazing cocksfoot swards during November-December.
