    Description: The instrumental record reveals that tropical cyclone activity is sensitive to oceanic and atmospheric variability on inter-annual and decadal scales. However, our understanding of the influence of climate on tropical cyclone behaviour is restricted by the short historical record and the sparseness of prehistorical reconstructions, particularly in the western North Pacific, where coastal communities suffer loss of life and livelihood from typhoons annually. Here, to explore past regional typhoon dynamics, we reconstruct three millennia of deep tropical North Pacific cyclogenesis. Combined with existing records, our reconstruction demonstrates that low-baseline typhoon activity prior to 1350 ce was followed by an interval of frequent storms during the Little Ice Age. This pattern, concurrent with hydroclimate proxy variability, suggests a centennial-scale link between Pacific hydroclimate and tropical cyclone climatology. An ensemble of global climate models demonstrates a migration of the Pacific Walker circulation and variability in two Pacific climate modes during the Little Ice Age, which probably contributed to enhanced tropical cyclone activity in the tropical western North Pacific. In the next century, projected changes to the Pacific Walker circulation and expansion of the tropics will invert these Little Ice Age hydroclimate trends, potentially reducing typhoon activity in the deep tropical Pacific.

    Notes: A new tangentially viewing interferometer has been operated on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. This system uses both the near infrared and visible beams from a continuous wave, diode pumped, frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser to produce the two wavelengths needed for vibration subtraction. A single Bragg cell driven at two harmonically related frequencies provides the basis for a novel heterodyne detection technique. Comparison of the data from the tangentially viewing interferometer and a vertically viewing CO2 interferometer will be discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ozone depletion potential (ODP) represents the cumulative ozone depletion induced by a particular halocarbon relative to a reference gas (usually trichlorofluoromethane, CFC-11). We focus on ODP estimation for methyl bromide. Previous attempts at its estimation have assumed that components of the ODP equation are lognormally distributed. By considering a wide range of modeling scenarios, we show that this restriction (which is based on computational convenience rather than experimental evidence) has obscured the true uncertainty in the ODP value. Moreover, when publishing point estimates for the ODP value, previous authors have given either mean or median values. We submit that a more appropriate choice for a point estimate is the mode since the distribution of ODP is skewed and since the mode is by definition, the most likely value. For each modeling scenario considered, modal values are given. In general, we find these ODP point estimates are considerably lower than those published elsewhere.

    Notes: Random gene tagging was used to obtain new mutants of the marine cyanobacterium, Synechococcus sp. PCC7002, with defects in the CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM). Two of these mutants, K22 and A41, showed poor growth at limiting CO2. Isolation and sequencing of a 6.6 kb genomic region revealed the existence of five potential protein-coding regions, all arranged in the same transcriptional direction. These regions code for an RbcR homologue, NdhF3 (subunit 5 of type 1 NAD(P)H dehydrogenase; NDH-1 complex), NdhD3 (subunit 4 of NDH-1), ORF427 and ORF133 (hypothetical proteins). Insertional mutants in ndhD3, ndhF3 and ORF427, like A41 and K22, were all incapable of inducing high-affinity CO2 uptake and were not fully capable of inducing high-affinity HCO3− transport. ndhD3 and ndhF3 mutants displayed P700 re-reduction rates identical to wild-type cells, suggesting that NdhD3 is part of a specific NDH-1 complex that is not involved in photosynthetic cyclic electron transport. Thus, it is feasible that NdhD3, NdhF3 and ORF427 might form part of a novel NDH-1 complex located on the cytoplasmic membrane and involved in tightly coupled energization of high-affinity CO2 transport. The possibility of multiple, functionally distinct NDH-1 complexes in cyanobacteria is discussed.

    Notes: To evaluate the effectiveness of ventilation systems in outdoor jackets, two jackets were purchased and modified, one made of PTFE laminated fabric and the other made of polyurethane coated fabric. Six male subjects undertook exercise routines simulating fell walking while wearing these jackets. The skin temperature at four different locations and the amount of perspiration generated during exercise were recorded for analysis. The experimental results were analysed using two- way analysis of variance. From the analysis it was found that during the exercise the design of the pit zip openings, especially with pit zip openings at both sleeve and side seams, in a jacket has an effect on thermal regulation, limiting the rate of temperature increase; however, during rest it is the fabric that plays the more important role. The results for the period of exercise suggest that the provision of ventilation at appropriate positions in the jacket could contribute considerably to heat loss irrespective of the use of breathable fabrics.
