    Notes: In this paper, the options for the optical design for the UK-CRG beamline that is to be built at the ESRF are described here. This paper discusses how the options were narrowed to just two configurations and results are presented from ray-tracing simulations that were used to provide comparative flux outputs in order to assist in making the final choice. In conclusion, a discussion is presented of how a novel mirror concept, derived for one of the configurations, might have wider application. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The goal of automated three dimensional measurement of arbitrary objects using photogrammetric methods is a long way from being achieved, but significant progress is being made. However, automated measurement of small objects using inexpensive CCD cameras and frame grabbers is becoming increasingly common. A number of such systems have been developed both for commercial use and for academic research. It is within this latter context that a system to measure objects within a controlled environment has been developed at City University. The objective of the research is not only to produce a flexible measuring system for use in online inspection, but also to address many of the fundamental problems that hinder three dimensional measurement outside a controlled environment.

    Notes: A few of the many interesting aspects of the mind, life and work of Robert Hooke (1635-1703) are discussed, particularly some that are relevant to opto-mechanical photogrammetric plotters and cameras. Evidence from primary and secondary sources is presented which indicates that Hooke devised instruments with optical and mechanical components which later came to be used in photogrammetric plotters, that he recognized the value of perspective projection in accurate recording of terrain, and devised a “Picture-Box” for that purpose. The question of how far he progressed in photography in experiments with purple dyes is left open. These “photogrammetric” activities of Hooke's are shown to have been only a small part of his work in London which included duties as Curator of Experiments to the Royal Society, Professor of Geometry at Gresham College, and Surveyor to the City of London Authorities following the Great Fire in 1666.

    Notes: Multi-environment trials (METs) are used in plant breeding programmes to evaluate genotypes (lines/families) as a basis for selection on expected performance (yield and/or quality) in a target population of environments (TPE). When a large component of the genotype environment (G × E) interactions results from crossover interactions, samples of environments in METs that deviate from the TPE provide a suboptimal basis for selection of genotypes on performance expected in the TPE. To adjust for the negative effects of these deviations, a selection strategy that weights the data from the MET according to their expected frequency of occurrence in the TPE (i.e. a weighted selection strategy) was investigated. Computer simulation methodology was used to obtain preliminary information on the weighted selection strategy and compare it to the traditional unweighted selection strategy for a range of MET scenarios and G × E interaction models. The evaluation of the weighted selection strategy was conducted in context with the germplasm enhancement programme (GEP) of the Northern Wheat Improvement Programme in Australia. The results indicated that when the environments sampled in the MET matched those expected in the TPE, the unweighted and weighted selection strategies achieved a similar response to selection in the TPE. However, when the environments sampled in the MET did not match the expectations in the TPE and a large component of the G × E interactions resulted from crossover interactions, the weighted selection strategy achieved a greater response to selection in the TPE. The advantage of the weighted strategy increased as the amount of crossover G × E interaction increased or fewer environments were sampled in the METs.

    Notes: The ratio of the magnetic to the charge form factors of nickel has been determined by white-beam X-ray diffraction. The measurements were made on the new UK magnetic scattering beamline (XMaS) on a dipole source at the ESRF. The data comprise the three (h,h,0) reflections (4,4,0), (6,6,0) and (8,8,0) and the seven high-order (h,0,0) reflections (6,0,0) to (18,0,0), which doubles the range of wavevectors compared to previous studies. The data have been analysed using Hartree–Fock free-ion wave functions and core electron polarization effects were included. The results support the interpretation of neutron data obtained at lower momentum transfer for the eg and t2g orbital occupancies. The polarization of the dipole source is deduced to vary from 99.88 to 99.83% between 5 and 15 keV, respectively. This high value makes it an extremely suitable source for studies of ferromagnetism.

    Notes: The magnetic Compton profile of Fe [111] was measured using circularly polarized synchrotron radiation at incident energies of 84.4, 167.2 and 256.0 keV on the high-energy beamline at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. It was found that the momentum resolution of these experiments, which use semiconductor detectors, improves by almost a factor of two over what was previously possible by this technique at photon energies of (̃1/10)mc2. It was also observed that all three spectra reduced to the magnetic Compton profile, describing the spin-dependent ground-state momentum density, and that within the experimental error the integrated intensity of the magnetic effect scaled as predicted by the cross section derived in the limit of energies much less than the rest energy of the electron. The magnetic Compton profile of Fe [111], measured using 167.2 keV incident energy and with momentum resolution of 0.42 a.u., was compared with the prediction from a full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave model profile. The fine structure predicted by theory was confirmed by the experimental profile at this improved resolution.

    Notes: Abstract The use of digital image analysis for the investigation of many natural phenomena is not novel. A vast amount of literature exists on its application to the study of a diversity of physical characteristics from many environments. The power of this tool is now being realised, however, in the study of sediments, from both marine and lacustrine environments. The advent of image processing applications for use in a personal computing environment, and the availability of high resolution digital video cameras, are serving to bring the technique to the desktops of many researchers. This paper will attempt to review those techniques which may be found useful by researchers contemplating the use of image analysis in this type of study, and in particular those who need to count laminations in order to construct a chronology, or to compile time series from lamina thickness or composition, for comparison with those derived from other datasets. Much of the information may be found already in print, but it derives from many disciplines, and does not seem to have been documented previously in this connection.
