    Notes: Conventional continuum damage descriptions of material degeneration suffer from loss of well-posedness beyond a certain level of accumulated damage. As a consequence, numerical solutions are obtained which are unacceptable from a physical point of view. The introduction of higher-order deformation gradients in the constitutive model is demonstrated to be an adequate remedy to this deficiency of standard damage models. A consistent numerical solution procedure of the governing partial differential equations is presented, which is shown to be capable of properly simulating localization phenomena.

    Notes: A completely numerical method for steady state linear viscoelastic stress analysis is presented by means of the finite element approach. Numerical representations of the measured viscoelastic constitutive relations are used. This method is developed to obtain steady state solutions to mixed boundary value problems in which the character of the boundary conditions at a point changes with time. Such problems cannot be handled by direct application of the correspondence theorem. A numerical example of viscoelastic sheet rolling is presented along with an experimental verification of the solution by photo-viscoelastic observations.

    Notes: The paper reviews some discrete probabilistic numerical techniques with particular emphasis on heat flow in inhomogeneous materials. The effects of different nodal configurations on the development of suitable algorithms are outlined and we suggest a new and consistent description for the discrete apparent effusivity. Our approach is then discussed in the context of TLM, and analogues are presented for flux relaxation time and effusivity.

    Notes: We show that the general boundary condition D∂Φ/∂x + αΦ = 0 (D is the diffusion coefficient and α is a constant) in TLM diffusion modelling can be expressed accurately in terms of a voltage reflection coefficient ρ = (Δx - αΔt)/(Δx + αΔt), where Δx is the spatial resolution and Δt is the time step. Based on this general expression, the special cases of short-circuit (ρ = -1), open-circuit (ρ = 1) and matched-load (ρ = 0) boundaries can be described succinctly by α → ∞, α → 0 and α = Δx/Δt, respectively. This formulation allows for straightforward treatment of mixed boundary conditions found, for example, in diffusion-drift systems.

    Notes: In the paper the author presents a novel point of view for the refinement and derefinement algorithms of triangular nested meshes using fractal concepts and iterated function systems (IFS). The fractal behaviour can be understood in the sense that these meshes feature a remarkable amplifying invariance under changes of magnification. Here we compare the meshes obtained by the combination of these algorithms with those presented by Bova and Carey (1992). Although both of the meshes are very similar, the current algorithms automatically build and manage sequences of nested irregular discretizations of the domain. The author illustrates here how the application of IFS families is equivalent to the use of an adaptive strategy that combines the refinement procedure with the derefinement one.

    Notes: The present work deals with an asymptotic numerical method, based on Padé approximants. The expected advantage of this method is twofold. Firstly, it reduces the computational costs. Secondly, the automatization of the continuation process becomes easier, since the step-length can be determined a posteriori. So far, this method has only been applied to DKT elements. Here it is applied to other types of elements, namely truss elements and finite rotation non-linear shell elements. It will be shown that difficulties arise when this method is applied to finite rotation shell elements. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The treatment of finite hyperelasticity set on the spatial configuration is described. The fully consistent linearization of the corresponding field equations is carried out in detail. It provides the basis of the exact Newton-Raphson procedure for solution of the associated boundary value problem. A membrane formulation is presented in which the incompressibility constraint usually employed in the description of rubber-like materials is satisfied trivially. The excellent performance of the proposed framework is demonstrated by means of 3-D membrane finite element simulations.

    Notes: In this paper an approach to the formulation of equilibrium elements for the analysis of three-dimensional elasticity problems is presented.This formulation is an extension of the approach previously proposed for the analysis of two-dimensional elasticity problems. The general aspects of the formulation remain unchanged when applied to the new problem, but new points are considered, namely the way to perform volume integrations for general elements and the techniques used to obtain the self-equilibrated three-dimensional stress approximation functions.The numerical behaviour of such elements is presented and discussed.
