    Beschreibung: The nuclear and magnetic structures of Mn3Fe2Si3 are investigated in the temperature range from 20 to 300 K. The magnetic properties of Mn3Fe2Si3 were measured on a single crystal. The compound undergoes a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition at TN2 ≃ 120 K and an antiferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition at TN1 ≃ 69 K. A similar sequence of magnetic phase transitions is found for the parent compound Mn5Si3 upon temperature variation, but the field‐driven transition observed in Mn5Si3 is not found in Mn3Fe2Si3, resulting in a strongly reduced magnetocaloric effect. Structurally, the hexagonal symmetry found for both compounds under ambient conditions is preserved in Mn3Fe2Si3 through both magnetic transitions, indicating that the crystal structure is only weakly affected by the magnetic phase transition, in contrast to Mn5Si3 where both transitions distort the nuclear structure. Both compounds feature a collinear high‐temperature magnetic phase AF2 and transfer into a non‐collinear phase AF1 at low temperature. While one of the distinct crystallographic sites remains disordered in the AF2 phase in the parent compound, the magnetic structure in the AF2 phase involves all magnetic atoms in Mn3Fe2Si3. These observations imply that the distinct sites occupied by the magnetic atoms play an important role in the magnetocaloric behaviour of the family.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Zusammenfassung.  Die Kristallisationsabfolge beim Abdampfen von Salzsolen wurde bei 25°C aufder Basis der entsprechenden Phasendiagramme computerunterstützt berechnet. Dabei wurden sowohl die auskristallisierenden festen Phasen bestimmt als auch deren Massenbilanzen ermittelt. Um quantitative Information über das Abdampfverhalten von Salzsolen zu erhalten, wurden diesen Berechnungen zwei Grenzannahmen zugrunde gelegt: i) das Fest-flüssig-Gleichgewicht stellt sich laufend ein, sodaß sich feste Phasen während des Verdampfungsprozesses teilweise oder vollständig wieder auflösen können, bzw. ii) die festen Phasen sedimentieren und trennen sich von der flüssigen Phase, sodaß keine Wiederauflösung möglich ist. Tages- bzw. jahreszeitliche Temperaturschwankungen sowie metastabile Gleichgewichte wurden nicht berücksichtigt.
    Notizen: Summary.  A computer assisted calculation of the crystallization sequence of a brine is performed on the basis of the respective phase diagrams at 25°C. The nature of the solids and the mass balance are determined. The calculation gives immediate quantitative information of the brine behavior during evaporation. The calculation is performed assuming that i) the solids are always in equilibrium with the liquid, i.e. that some solid phases can be partially or completely redissolved during evaporation, or ii) the solids are separated from liquid by sedimentation and no redissolution is possible. The seasonal or day-night fluctuations of temperature and metastable equilibria have not been taken into account.

    Notizen: Abstract Molecularly imprinted polyurethanes were used as sensor materials for monitoring the degradation of automotive engine oils. Imprinting with characteristic oils permits the analysis of these complex mixtures without accurately knowing their composition. Mass-sensitive quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs) coated with such layers exhibit mass effects in addition to frequency shifts caused by viscosity, which can be compensated by an uncoated quartz or a non-imprint layer. Incorporation of degradation products into the imprinted coatings is a bulk phenomenon, which is proven by variation of the sensor layer height. Therefore, the resulting sensor effects are determined by the degradation products in the oil.

    Notizen: Abstract  The experience gained in the aftermath of serious radiation accidents shows that forests are an important source of external and internal exposure of the affected population. This paper presents the results of an assessment of the major radiological consequences for forests of Russia, most heavily contaminated after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (ChNPP) accident. Illustrated in the Novozybkovsky district of the Russian Federation, the significance of different forest exposure pathways is estimated and the doses resulting from forest pathways are compared with the doses from agricultural products. It has been found that the contribution of mushrooms and berries to the internal doses of the population, relative to the doses from agricultural products, varied from 10–15% in 1987 to 40–45% in 1996. The results indicate large differences in internal exposure of members of the ”critical groups” and ”normal population”, increasing with time after deposition. Data are presented that give information on the contribution of forests to the collective doses of inhabitants of the area under consideration. It has been shown that for 10 years after the accident (1987–1996), the contribution of forest products to the collective dose of the rural population living in contaminated forests of the Novozybkovsky district, amounts to about 20% (213 person Sv) of the total collective dose of internal and external exposures. However, a potential impact of these products including the dose from exported products is much higher and might reach 659 person Sv. It has been found that in the long-term after the ChNPP accident, serious attention should be given to forest countermeasures, and restoration strategies should be selected on the basis of a combined analysis of the effectiveness of forest and agricultural countermeasures.

    Notizen: Abstract The transition between the subsynaptic folds and the T-tubules demonstrated in a former paper was further investigated in the sole plate area by using the extracellular marker Lanthanum. A tubular network of the T-system of the sole plate area which is connected to the subsynaptic folds and to the t-tubular elements between the myofibrils is described for the first time. T-tubules of this network criss-cross through the sarcoplasm of the sole plate and lie in close proximity to sole plate nuclei and mitochondria. Cisterns of sarcoplasmic reticulum of the sole plate area make contact with these t-tubules forming triads. The possible physiological role of this sole plate network and its triads will be discussed with regard to a transport of substances in tubules with the dimension of nanotubes and Ca2+ activated processes in the sole plate area.

    Notizen: Abstract. We investigate an antiferromagnetic s = 1/2 quantum spin system with anisotropic spin exchange on a fractal lattice, the Sierpiński gasket. We introduce a novel approximative numerical method, the configuration selective diagonalization (CSD) and apply this method to a the Sierpiński gasket with N = 42. Using this and other methods we calculate ground state energies, spin gap, spin-spin correlations and specific heat data and conclude that the s = 1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on the Sierpinski gasket shows a disordered magnetic ground state with on the Sierpi’nski gasket shows a disordered magnetic ground state with a very short correlation length of $\xi \approx 1$ and an, albeit very small, spin gap. This conclusion holds for Heisenberg as well a for XY exchange.

    Notizen: Abstract  The chemical synthesis and the physicochemical properties of stable poly(vinyl formamide-co-vinyl amine)/silica hybrid particles are presented. Copolymers of poly(vinyl formamide) (PVFA) and poly(vinyl amine) (PVAm) and their protonated forms were adsorbed onto silica from aqueous solutions. The influences of the pH strength and the ion concentration of the aqueous solution as well as the copolymer composition (degree of hydrolyzation of PVFA), and the molecular mass on the adsorption process were investigated by electrokinetic measurements, potentiometric titration, and quantitative elemental analyses. Silica surface-charge neutralization is achieved at a pH strength above 10 for highly hydrolyzed (95%) PVFA polymers. Decreasing the amino content in the PVAm chain shifts successively both the point of zero charge and the isoelectric point to lower pH values. PVFA-co-PVAm layers onto silica are adsorbed weakly. To fix these layers irreversibly, cross-linking reactions with (4,4′-diisocyanate)diphenyl methane were carried out on the surface of solid PVFA-co-PVAm/silica hybrid particles suspended in acetone. The cross-linking reaction, which is connected with the conversion of amino groups, is also a tool to control the surface charge of the PVFA-co-PVAm/silica hybrids. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and solid-state 13C cross-polarization magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy were used to obtain information on the number of and the structure of the functionalized polyelectrolyte layers on silica. The success of cross-linking was also shown by the results of these spectroscopic methods.

    Notizen: Abstract Aerodynamic theory predicts that power output during flight should vary with body mass by an exponent of 1.56 when wing morphology remains constant (within an individual), and by an exponent of 1.19 when wing morphology changes with body mass (within a species or between species). I tested these predictions by estimating the power input during horizontal flight in three pregnant and two subadult Glossophaga soricina using a multivariate regression model. This analysis yielded power input during resting and flight as well as the energetic equivalent of change in body mass. A comparison of the estimated flight power for pregnant G. soricina, with published data on flight power of non-pregnant adults, revealed that energy turnover in flight is highest for pregnant G. soricina. Flight power of a 13-g pregnant G. soricina was even higher than that of a 16-g non-pregnant Glossophaga longirostris. A least-squares regression analysis yielded the following equations for the intraspecific scaling of flight power with body mass: power input during horizontal flight (P f )=24099 body mass (bm; kg)2.15 (r 2=0.97) for the intra-individual allometry (pregnancy) and P f =113 bm(kg)0.95 (r 2=0.99) for the inter-individual allometry (ontogeny). Both mass exponents are not significantly different from the predicted values for the scaling relationship of flight power within an individual (1.56) and within a species (1.19). This is the first measurement of power input during flight for subadult and pregnant bats.
