Notes: An electrical conductivity probe, designed for use with “direct push” technology, has been successfully used to locate buried drums, contaminant plumes, and to precisely locate and characterize a previously installed permeable reactive iron wall. The conductivity probe was designed to characterize various soil and sediment types as it was driven through the dry and saturated soil matrix; however, its ability to locate and characterize subsurface anomalies may also prove to be a valuable asset. The probe uses an electrical field that works like and mimics the results from an oilfield engineering tool called the Wenner array. This electrical field array penetrates into the soil matrix to measure the electrical conductivity of the soil matrix surrounding the probe to a radius of about two to four inches. This tool has allowed operating personnel to verify the location of manmade or natural subsurface anomalies with precision.

Notes: The at-sea movement of marine mammals is an important component of their foraging ecology, but has been difficult to study. Geolocation timed-data recorders (GLTDRs) estimate positions using measured light level to calculate day length and local noon. It is well known that these location estimates are imprecise (mean error of 〉 1°). Satellite telemetry generally provides a more accurate, but also more expensive means of monitoring movement. We evaluated the accuracy and precision of geolocation positions by comparing these locations with satellite data from Service Argos for eight free-ranging gray seals (Halichoerns grypus) equipped with both a satellite-linked data recorder (SDR) and a GLTDR. Geolocation positions differed by 1,026.0 ± 292.28 km from the corresponding Argos locations. We developed an algorithm to correct geolocation positions by comparing surface water temperature (ST) and dive depth collected by GLTDRs with existing sea-surface temperature and bathymetry databases. The corrected positions were significantly closer (P 〈 0.025) to the Argos locations of these seals (94.2 ± 8.22 km). The original geolocation positions would have led to incorrect conclusions about the use of space by gray seals; however, the corrected positions can be reliably used to study the large-scale spatial distribution of individuals.

Notes: Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) are small pinnipeds that are widely distributed throughout the temperate coastal regions of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. We determined birth mass, neonatal growth rates, weaning age, and weaning mass of NE Pacific harbor seals (P. v. richardsi) during a capture-recapture study that spanned the nursing period (Sidney Island, British Columbia, Canada). Of 46 harbor seal pups initially captured, 28 were classified as newborns (i. e., 〈 24 h old). Mean body mass of newborns was 11.2 ± SE 0.31 kg. Pups were individually tagged and recaptured throughout the nursing period. Average daily mass gain during the nursing period was 394 ± 26 g. Mean birth mass of males did not differ significantly from females, although pups found with fetal pelage (lanugo) (21.4% of all newborns) were smaller at birth (9.8 ± 0.44 kg) than non-lanugo pups (11.6 ± 0.33 kg). Mean weaning mass was estimated at 23.6 ± 1.2 kg at a mean weaning age of 32 d ± 1.5 d. While birth and weaning masses differed little from the published data for offshore Sable Island harbor seals (P. v. concolor), British Columbia harbor seals are characterized by half the daily mass gain and a longer nursing period.

Notes: Does financial development translate into a comparative advantage in industries that use more external finance? The author uses industry-level data on firms’ dependence on external finance for 36 industries and 56 countries to examine this question. It is shown that countries with better-developed financial systems have higher export shares and trade balances in industries that use more external finance. These results are robust to the use of alternative measures of external dependence and financial development and are not due to reverse causality or simultaneity bias.

Notes: Abstract. The large leaf rosettes of the so-called ‘giant rosette’ plants which inhabit the alpine region of tropical mountains are composed of a great number of adult leaves surrounding a central cone of developing leaves. Upon onset of the nocturnal frost period the adult leaves nyctinastically bend inwards and form a night-bud around the central leaf bud. The insulating effect of the night-bud was analysed in four species: Senecio keniodendron, Senecio brassica. Lobelia keniensis and Lobelia telekii which grow on Mt Kenya (Kenya). Freezing is avoided by a delay of cooling which is sufficient until rewarming by the next day's sunshine. A consequence of this delay is that the temperature in the nocturnal bud remains higher than that of the outer leaves which are often stiffly frozen after cold nights. Only one freezing point was detected on the leaf temperature recordings. Depending on the water state, the freezing points were in the range — 1°C to —4.2°C. Sucrose, amounting to 38% of the leaf dry weight, may act as a cryoprotectant for the cell membranes. Frost hardiness of the leaves, as determined with a laboratory method, was sufficient to enable the plants to survive during the nocturnal frost temperatures as measured in the field.

Notes: Raw and cooked samples of nine different commercial classes of the Phaseolus vulgaris L. species were analyzed for their contents of five water-soluble vitamins and nine minerals. On a 100g dry weight basis, the mean vitamin and mineral values of the raw bean samples amounted to the following: thiamin 0.99 mg, riboflavin 0.20 mg, niacin 1.99 mg, vitamin B6 0.49 mg, folic acid 0.30 mg, phosphorus 0.46g, sodium 10.3 mg, potassium 1.54g, calcium 0.15g, magnesium 0.20g, zinc 3.2 mg, manganese 1.4 mg, copper 0.91 mg, and iron 5.84 mg. With a few exceptions variabilities of these nutrients between bean classes exceeded those within classes. Nutrient variabilities in cooked samples, again with a few exceptions, were higher than in the corresponding uncooked material. Retention values of water-soluble vitamins during cooking between bean classes averaged between 70 and 75%. Retention of minerals during cooking ranged from a low of 38.5% for sodium to total retention for calcium, with the majority of the minerals falling into the 80–90% level.

Notes: A simple, rapid and accurate method for the quantitative determination of ascorbic acid in potatoes and potato products has been developed. The system is based on the reverse-phase, ion-pairing concept of high-performance liquid chromatography. Sample preparation is minimal and involves a one-step extraction followed by filtration and/or centrifugation. Recoveries were near the 100% level. As low as 0.02 mcg ascorbic acid could be determined.

Notes: Electrophoretic analysis was performed on eight protein systems (lactate dehydrogenase, liver esterases, superoxide dismutase, haemoglobin, isocitrate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogIuconate dehydrogenase, transferrin) in Ctenopharyngodon idella, Hypophthalmichthys nobilis, and their F1 triploid hybrid. The data demonstrated codominant Mendelian inheritance at individual loci for each protein system. Transferrin and superoxide dismutase were the only proteins found to be polymorphic in either parental species. Both parental alleles were present and functional at each enzyme locus examined in the F1 triploid hybrid.

Notes: Diploid and triploid hybrids resulted when grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, and big-head carp, Hypophthalmichthys nobilis, were experimentally hybridized. Erythrocyte size can be used to distinguish C. idella×H. nobilis hybrids of different ploidies.
