    Description: The postseismic response of a viscoelastic Earth can be computed analytically with a normal-mode approach, based on the application of propagator methods. This framework suffers from many limitations, mostly connected with the solution of the secular equation, whose degree scales with the number of viscoelastic layers so that only low-resolution models can be practically solved. Recently, a viable alternative to the normal-mode approach has been proposed, based on the Post-Widder inversion formula. This method allows to overcome some of the intrinsic limitations of the normal-mode approach, so that Earth models with arbitrary radial resolution can be employed and general linear non-Maxwell rheologies can be implemented. In this work, we test the robustness of the method against a standard normal-mode approach in order to optimize computation performance while ensuring the solution stability. As an application, we address the issue of finding the minimum number of layers with distinct elastic properties needed to accurately describe the postseismic relaxation of a realistic Earth model.

    Description: The great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of December 26, 2004 was one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded since 1900. The earthquake resulted from complex slip on the fault along the subduction zone where the oceanic portion of the Indian Plate slides under the Eurasian Plate, by the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The direction of convergence of the subducting plate relative to the overriding plate is oriented oblique to the trench axis and the rupture occurred for 1200 km along the interplate megathrust. In the present work we use a new computational FEM strategy to model the co- and post-seismic deformation field associated with the Sumatra earthquake. We are able to study the joint effects of sphericity and 3D geometrical and reological heterogeneities on the investigated observables. The comparison between our synthetic results and the available deformation data will allow us to ascertain if complexities in the physical properties of the medium could play an important role in assessing the deformation field besides source properties.

    Description: The L'Aquila earthquake (Mw 6.3) occurred on April 6th at 01:32 UTC in the Central Appennines at a depth of about 9 km and was felt all over Central Italy. The main shock was preceded by a long seismic sequence started several months before and was followed by thousands of aftershocks, some of them with Mw〉4. We built up a high resolution three-dimensional model, incorporating surface topography, which was discretized using 20-nodes brick elements. The element horizontal size is biased from 500 m to 2 km using the paving meshing algorithm in combination with an appropriate adaptive sizing function. A realistic rheology was introduced from a vp/vpvs travel time tomographic model. We computed the co-seismic deformation induced by the earthquake by means of a recently developed finite elements simulation tool, FEMSA (Finite Element Modeling for Seismic Applications). We used different seismic source models obtained from fault inversion of GPS measurements, joint inversion of strong motion and GPS data and from inversion of DInSAR displacements. The synthetic deformation patterns were compared with the experimental results in order to evaluate which source model better reconciles the data and quantify the trade off introduced by 1D simulations.

In this work we present a 3D Finite Element (FE) study of the co-seismic deformation field produced by the L'Aquila earthquake and investigated the slip distribution on the fault. Our approach is based on a fully 3D parametrization of the spatial domain by means of a high resolution hexahedral mesh, discretized using 20-nodes brick elements. The element horizontal size is biased from 300 m to 2-3 km using the paving meshing algorithm in combination with an appropriate adaptive sizing function. Real surface topography (500 m) and rheological heterogeneities, deduced from a vp/vs travel time tomographic model, were incorporated within the model. The seismic source has been modeled as a normal fault plane having an heterogeneous moment release. We first computed the co--seismic deformation field by a direct simulation and then the Green's functions, to retrieve the slip distribution on the fault by linear inversion of different GPS datasets. Our results show that the adoption of a realistic 3D domain has a sensible impact on the rupture slip distribution, confirming that a simple halfspace approach introduces some trade-off between domain homogeneity and source complexity.

    Description: The evolution and state of geological structure at Earth's surface is best understood with an accurate characterization of the subsurface. Here we present seismic tomographic images of the Italian lithosphere based on ground motion recordings and characterized by compressional and shear wavespeed structure at remarkable resolution, corresponding to a minimum period of ∼10 s. Enhanced accuracy is enabled by state-of-the-art three-dimensional wavefield simulations in combination with an adjoint-state method. We focus on three primary findings of our model Im25. It highlights the distribution of fluids and gas (CO2) within the Italian subsurface and their correlation with seismicity. It illuminates Mt. Etna volcano and supports the hypothesis of a deep reservoir (∼30 km) feeding a shallower magma-filled intrusive body. Offshore of the eastern Italian coast, it reveals that the Adriatic plate is made of two distinct microplates, separated by the Gargano deformation zone, indicating a complex lithosphere and tectonic evolution.

    Description: We present the commented transcription of three rare articles published in 19091910 by Father Atto Maccioni o.f.m. This friar is one of the least known among the many ecclesiastics who cultivated seismology from the 18th century onwards. Maccioni, from 1908 to 1926, managed a seismic observatory at the Sienese convent of the Osservanza. He devised an “Avvisatore”: a device equipped with a modified coherer with respect to those adopted in radiotelegraphic communications, aimed to detect natural radio signals associated with earthquakes. From the few available results it seems that the scholar obtained positive feedback, but the most interesting aspect of the story is that until now it was generally believed that this kind of research began only quite recently [Warwick, 1982]. On the contrary Maccioni may have been the first ever to study a possible electromagnetic precursor, more than a century ago.

Maccioni, che dal 1908 al 1926 gestì un osservatorio sismico presso il convento senese dell’Osservanza, aveva ideato l’Avvisatore, un dispositivo munito di un coherer diverso da quelli radiotelegrafici e destinato a rilevare segnali radio naturali associati ai terremoti. Dai pochi risultati disponibili sembra che lo studioso abbia avuto dei riscontri positivi ma l’aspetto più interessante della vicenda è che finora si era creduto che ricerche di questo tipo fossero iniziate solo molto di recente [Warwick, 1982]. Invece Maccioni potrebbe essere stato il primo al mondo a studiare, più di un secolo fa, un ipotetico precursore elettromagnetico.

    Description: We present to the international scientific community three important works by Father Maccioni adapted into English with several parts literally translated. The investigation into the existence of an electromagnetic (EM) seismic precursor was carried on in Italy in the beginning of the twentieth century and exploited the capabilities of a specifically designed coherer. For several reasons, both the work and the author are widely unknown even in Italy. We think this is likely to be the very first historical case of a study of a seismic precursor of the EM type
