Notes: The π-electronic properties of furan, oxazole, benzofuran, benzoxazole, anthranil, and dibenzofuran are calculated by the semiempirical self-consistent-field molecular orbital method. A single set of parameters is found which satisfactorily reproduces the π → π* electronic transition energies and other π-electronic properties.

Notes: The generalized algebraic eigenvalue problem (A - λB)x = 0 arises in the use of the variation method in quantum mechanics. If, within the limitations of the computer word-length, the basis set used to expand the trial wave function is linearly dependent, the matrix B becomes singular. Three different algorithms designed to deal with this difficulty have been investigated, paying special attention to the problem of identifying which members of the basis set are effectively linearly dependent. The advantages and limitations of each method are discussed.

Notes: It is shown that under certain conditions the time-dependent Hamilton-Jacobi equation (TDHJE) is satisfied in the mean in quantum mechanics provided the classical action is replaced by Dirac's complex quantal action. This may be regarded as the equivalent of Ehrenfest's theorem for the TDHJE. Expectation values of operators are discussed in a similar manner.

Notes: Formulae are presented for the evaluation of some definite integrals in which the Laguerre orthogonal functions are contained. In some cases mechanical quadratures are to be preferred, and a scheme is presented for generating such a quadrature as it is needed.

Notes: A modified INDO procedure has been used to calculate the proton hyperfine splittings in benzyl and the isoelectronic anilino, phenoxy and 2-azabenzyl as well as 2- and 3-thenyl radicals. The present procedure differentiates between s-, p- and d-orbitals on an atom in estimating various integrals involving them, satisfies the rotational invariance requirements and employs an orthogonalized basis set of atomic orbitals for obtaining core-Hamiltonian matrix elements. The calculations based on using the exponents which depend only on the type of orbital and the nature of atom fail to provide correct relative order of ortho and para proton splittings in benzyl as well as anilino, phenoxy and 2-azabenzyl radicals. On the other hand, use of the exponents which are modified according to the charge densities in various orbitals leads to a high absolute value for para proton splitting compared to that for ortho proton splitting which in case of all these radicals is in agreement with experiment. A spin density calculation on benzyl, anilino and phenoxy radicals considering the variation of one-center one-electron and one-center two-electron integrals for different protons with their charges is found to yield further improvement in the relative order of ortho and para proton splittings in all these radicals. In 2- and 3-thenyl radicals the role of 3d-orbitals on sulfur has also been examined. To our knowledge, no unrestricted INDO calculations including 3d-orbitals on sulfur have been reported in the literature so far.

Notes: A perturbation variation treatment of two-electron atoms using exp (-αr〈 - βr〉) as the zeroth order wave function is presented. The parameters α and β are variationally determined and the results are compared with the “physical” choice α = Z, β = Z - 1, and with Z-1 theory. The energy is given through fifth order in the perturbation.

Notes: A detailed study of the performance of the Morse, the Hulburt--Hirschfelder and the Lippincott potential energy functions has been carried out by comparing them with the Rydberg-Klein-Rees potential energy curves for a number of electronic states of various diatomic molecules. Further, by employing the above potential energy functions, the radial Schrödinger equation has been solved for the vibrational energy levels, G(v), and the vibrational wave functions, ψv. The latter have been employed to determine the rotational constants, Bv, for the individual vibrational energy levels. Then the molecular constants, we, wexe, weye, Be, αe and γe for the various electronic states, have been computed by using the values of G(v) and Bv. A comparison of the molecular constants derived in this manner with the experimental ones reveals better agreement, in most cases, than that reported by previous workers.

Notes: The molecular orbital configuration for the ground-state of O2 generates the valence formula . “Increased-valence” formulae for triatomic and polyatomic molecules have been developed recently. In them, more electrons participate in bonding than is possible for the familiar valence-bond formulae. Using oxyhaemoglobin as an example of an oxygen carrier, various increased-valence formulae are generated for the FeO2 groups. In the low-energy formulae, the iron is bonded to the above valence formula for O2. Therefore, in contrast to the bonding schemes of Pauling and Coryell, Griffith and Weiss, little reorganization of O2 need occur on formation of HbO2. This conclusion is independent of the mode of co-ordination of iron to the O2.
