    Notes: Isolation and physiological and molecular characterisation of culturable bacterial strains belonging to actinomycetes, pseudomonads and aerobic spore-forming bacteria were carried out on mycorrhizal root tips of Quercus robur var. peduncolata infected by Tuber borchii. Cellular density of the three bacterial groups in ectomycorrhizal root tips was estimated to be 1.3±0.11×106 cfu g−1 dry weight for total heterotrophic bacteria and 1.08±0.6×105 (mean±S.E.), 1.3±0.3×105 and 1.4±0.2×105 cfu g−1 dry weight for pseudomonads, actinomycetes and spore-forming bacteria respectively. Identification of pseudomonads by the Biolog® system indicated, besides the most represented species Pseudomonas fluorescens (biotypes B, F and G), the occurrence of strains belonging to Pseudomonas corrugata. Amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis of actinomycetes and spore formers revealed at least three and six different groups of patterns, respectively. Many bacterial isolates were able to induce variations in growth rates of T. borchii mycelium; among these, 101 strains showed antifungal activity, whereas 17 isolates, belonging to spore formers, were able to increase mycelial growth up to 78% when compared to uninoculated mycelial growth. The potential role of these populations in the development and establishment of mycorrhizas is discussed.

    Notes: Paris- type mycorrhiza is described in Smilax aspera L., an evergreen climbing plant of Mediterranean sclerophyllous woods. Wild plants were sampled from a protected area inside the Regional Natural Park Migliarino-S.Rossore-Massaciuccoli, on the northwestern coast of Italy, near Pisa. Mycorrhizas formed by S. aspera were identified as a variation of Paris-type arbuscular mycorrhizas. Detailed observations on stained roots and on fresh root sections showed that, after forming the appressorium, the fungus colonized the root by penetrating individual cells, growing intracellularly from cell to cell, and producing many coils and terminal arbuscules. S. aspera seedlings inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi Glomus mosseae and G. viscosum, which are known to form Arum-type mycorrhizas in many plant species, produced the same Paris-type-like mycorrhizas found in nature. This confirms that the type of arbuscular mycorrhizal infection is largely governed by the plant host genotype. Plants of S. aspera inoculated with G. mosseae and G. viscosum had larger growth increments than uninoculated plants. Thus Paris-type mycorrhizas produce growth responses comparable to those of Arum-type mycorrhizas.

    Notes: Summary The morphology of theAplysia buccal nerves and connectives has been studied by electron microscopic analysis. In these nerves the fine structure of the elements (connective sheath, glia, axons and their vesicular and cytoplasmatic content) is similar to that of other molluscan nerves. Some features seem to be comparable to other invertebrate groups such as Crustacea and Annelida. The axons have been divided into four classes on the basis of their calibre, and each type has been counted in all the nerves. The number of axons relating to identified buccal neurons is discussed. Finally, some speculations about relationships between buccal ganglia and peripheral regions connected by buccal nerves are proposed.

    Notes: Abstract The notion that statocysts originated from an infolding of ectoderm lined by ciliated sensory cells has been challenged with evidence of ‘capsule’-limited, non-ciliary statocysts in several independent phyla. Statocysts in turbellarians primitively lack cilia and are embedded within or closely adjoined to the cerebral ganglion; they are likely to be derived from nervous tissue. We investigated the development of the simple statocyst in an acoel turbellarian, a statocyst consisting of three cells. Observations of serial TEM sections of embryos at different stages of development support the hypothesis of an inner (non-epithelial) origin of the statocyst. First, a three-cell complex is delimited by a basal lamina; it then undergoes cavitation by swelling, autophagy, and fluid secretion. The statocyst becomes discernible within the precursor ganglion cells while they still contain yolk inclusions. The two outer (parietal) cells, enclosed together by a 10-nm-thick basal lamina, arrange themselves in an ovoid of about 10 µm diameter and surround the inner statolith-forming cell. The statolith is formed later within vacuoles of the statolith-forming cell.

    Notes: The positive-ion mass spectra of a number of didehydro amino acids (DDAA) obtained by electron ionization (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) using different regent gases as well as the collision-induced dissociation (CID) of mass-selected odd-electron ions and/or protonated molecules have been performed on a multiple quadrupole instrument. The positive-ion EI/CI mass spectra presented display a number of differences which are expected from different isomeric structures. Furthermore, differences associated with the proton affinities of the reagent gases are clearly evident in the poisitive-ion chemical ionization mass spectra as well as in some CID spectra of protonated molecules. This investigation demonstrates the suitability of chemical ionization for characterization of isomers of this important class of compounds and underlines the effect of the proton affinity of the reagent gas on the overall character of the positive-ion chemical ionization spectra.

    Description: Europa is a premier target for advancing both planetary science and astrobiology, as well as for opening a new window into the burgeoning field of comparative oceanography. The potentially habitable subsurface ocean of Europa may harbor life, and the globally young and comparatively thin ice shell of Europa may contain biosignatures that are readily accessible to a surface lander. Europa's icy shell also offers the opportunity to study tectonics and geologic cycles across a range of mechanisms and compositions. Here we detail the goals and mission architecture of the Europa Lander mission concept, as developed from 2015 through 2020. The science was developed by the 2016 Europa Lander Science Definition Team (SDT), and the mission architecture was developed by the preproject engineering team, in close collaboration with the SDT. In 2017 and 2018, the mission concept passed its mission concept review and delta-mission concept review, respectively. Since that time, the preproject has been advancing the technologies, and developing the hardware and software, needed to retire risks associated with technology, science, cost, and schedule.
