    Notes: Two disparate theoretical views of how informational contexts affect managerial sensemaking and decision making appear in organizational research. An organizational information processing perspective posits that increasing the flow of information within and between organizations will enhance environmental awareness. In contrast, behavioural decision making and social cognition research suggest that information may increase the occurrence or magnitude of overconfidence and illusions of control. These competing predictions were examined by means of an investigation of the relationship between informational contexts and top managers’ strategic issue interpretation. Findings indicate that managers whose organizations have environmental information readily available to them perceive higher control over issues than managers in organizations with lower informational availability. Moreover, managers in top management teams with higher information processing capacity seem to perceive higher degrees of control and manageability, and search for less data in issue interpretation, than managers in teams with lower information processing capacity. These results offer some support for the behavioural decision making and social cognition perspective, and question the organizational information processing prediction that organizations engaging in active information processing are more aware of the environment and more likely to assess environmental developments, trends or events in a more vigilant manner.

    Notes: In one of the last major Enron-related corporate reforms, the SEC approved on November 4, 2003 the final versions of both the New York Stock Exchange's and Nasdaq's corporate governance proposals. Generally, both sets of rules require listed companies to have a majority of their boards comprised of independent directors. In addition, the rules impose significant responsibilities on listed companies' nominating, compensation, and audit committees. With certain exceptions, both NYSE and Nasdaq companies will have until the earlier of (i) the company's first annual meeting occurring after January 15, 2004 or (ii) October 31, 2004 to comply with the new rules. This article compares both sets of new rules to current rules, discusses the differences between the NYSE's and Nasdaq's new rules and suggests steps issuers should take to comply with the new rules.

    Notes: Monoterpene levels in current year needles of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) seedlings were measured at the end of 4 years of exposure to ambient or elevated CO2 (+179 µmol mol−1), and ambient or elevated temperature (+0.3.5^C). Eleven monoterpenes were identified and quantified using gas chromatography/flame ionization detector/mass spectroscopy, with eight of these compounds regularly occurring in all trees examined. Elevated CO2 exposure significantly reduced the levels for four of the eight main compounds in needles. Total monoterpene production was reduced by 52% (P 〈 0.05). Elevated temperature also reduced monoterpene levels (P 〈 0.07). The combination of elevated temperature and elevated CO2 resulted in a 64% reduction in total monoterpenes compared with needles on ambient temperature trees. Two-way anova showed no significant temperature-CO2 interaction. It is hypothesized that seasonal reductions in needle monoterpene pools under elevated CO2 and temperature conditions may be due to a combination of competing carbon sinks, including increased carbon flux through the roots.

    Notes: Abstract —In the present study we compare results obtained from experimental estimates of local site amplification effects with those from numerical modelling using four different techniques. We benefit from an extremely precise knowledge of the near-surface structure and experimental estimates of the local amplification factors which are determined from seismic weak-motion data recorded by a dense array across a sedimentary basin at a European test-site in Northern Greece. The possibilities and limitations of the different modelling techniques (a 1-D technique, and three 2-D techniques) to model the effects of local amplification effects are tested. Amplifications calculated by the numerical techniques are only qualitatively compared with observed data from experimental studies in the time domain and directly in the frequency domain.¶As a result we conclude that, in the case of a complex subsurface geometry, 1-D modelling underestimates the amplification patterns in terms of absolute amplification level, and cannot correctly account for resonant frequencies, at least for modes higher than the fundamental mode. If a more realistic incident wave field than just a plane wave is taken into account, 2-D modelling reveals the fundamental frequency and shows adequate amplifications not only at the fundamental frequency but also at higher frequencies. The general trend of the amplifications at the lowest frequencies is well determined by the 2-D numerical modelling, and can therefore supply information for seismic risk analysis.

    Notes: Abstract  Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes confer individual olfactory identity that can be detected with exquisite accuracy by mice. The fact that MHC genes themselves generate the characteristic odortype, rather than dedicated odor-determining genes, was supported in studies of point mutations in H2K and HLA transgenic mice, which evinced distinct odor profiles in olfactory assays. In this article we provide further evidence for a central role of MHC genes themselves in odortype specification by demonstrating that mice that are unable to express their genomic class I MHC genes because they lack β2-microglobulin are distinguishable by scent from otherwise identical mice which possess an intact B2m gene. This odortype disparity appears at 9–12 days of gestational age, the period in which the MHC is first detectable in fetal cells of normal mice.

    Notes: Abstract.  Quantitative analysis of particles less than 10 nm in diameter requires a focused electron beam to isolate individual particles for X-ray emission spectrometry. Effects such as phase separation among particles and surface segregation within particles can only be determined by this technique. This analysis can be made quantitative with minimal use of the usual correction factors provided the small particles are supported on ceramic materials about the same thickness as the particles themselves. Two alloy nanoparticle systems are examined here: Pt-Rh and Pt-Re. In each case the catalytic properties resulting from various processing procedures have been correlated with the microstructure within and among individual particles.
