    Beschreibung: The aim of this special issue of “Annals of Geophysics” is to follow the seismic thread that, starting with the Belice earthquake (14-15 January, 1968), crosses the recent history of our Country until the days of the 2016 Amatrice seismic sequence. We interpreted the Belice earthquake like the “zero event” for the developing of the connections between the Italian society and the seismic catastrophes, striking Italy in the post-war period. We considered the territory as a unit, made up of geographical, geological, social, historical and urban aspects, proposing nine papers with reflections and readings on these aspects. These reflections concern the geological and structural context in which the Belice earthquake occurred, such as the novelties proposed by the most recent research in geological, geophysical, geochemical and geodetic fields, but also themes and reflections on the impact that the earthquake has had on the Italian and Sicilian societies, on their housing and infrastructural contexts, on the history of our Country. This issue fosters a contamination among different disciplines, reflecting the complexity of the impact that an earthquake has on any territory. In Barreca et al., we find new insights from the analysis of geological and geodetic data, aimed to the definition of the active faults potentially involved in the 1968 seismic events and, probably, also involved in two earthquakes hitting the ancient city of Selinunte. The monitoring of aquifers in the south-western Sicily is debated by Favara et al., who explored the potential of geochemical monitoring of the Santa Ninfa karst system, and by Madonia and Madonia, with a specific investigation of the Santa Ninfa cave. Another interesting aspect is depicted by Camarda et al., who studied the CO2 flux from the soil as a useful instrument for the detection of active faults and fractures in south-western Sicily. Azzaro et al, in the paper titled “A reappraisal of the 1968 Valle del Belìce seismic sequence (western Sicily): a case study of intensity assessment with cumulated damage effects”, discuss an important argument about the difficulties in determining the correct intensities when repeated earthquakes occur in the same area, and apply a technique of investigation already used for the 2016-2017 sequence in Central Italy. In the paper of Azzaro et al. titled “Earthquakes and ghost towns in Sicily: from the Valle del Belice in 1968 to the Val di Noto in 1693. The first stage of the virtual seismic itinerary through Italy” the authors describe a virtual tour (contained in a DVD) through the “ghost towns” in Sicily, which are the villages destroyed by natural events and later abandoned. In De Lucia et al. we find a pilot study on the demographic perspective of the impact of 1968 Belice and 1980 Irpinia-Basilicata earthquakes on local communities, with interesting arguments about the relationship between the marginality of these territories and their vulnerability. The two remaining papers report specific investigation on the hard and controversial reconstruction of the Valle del Belice villages destroyed by the earthquake. In Pappalardo and Martinico we find a general investigation on the underutilization of the reconstructed dwellings, with some reflections on the guidelines for the revitalization of these area, from a town planning perspective, and taking into account the present and future challenges for residents and local authorities, facing the risk of a progressive abandonment of these settlements. Finally, in Caponetto and D’Urso it is possible to find an innovative approach to the revitalization of an abandoned village (Poggioreale) in a touristic perspective.

    Beschreibung: In December 2018, Etna volcano experienced one of the largest episodes of unrest since the installation of geophysical monitoring networks in 1970. The unrest culminated in a short eruption with a small volume of lava erupted, a significant seismic crisis and deformation of the entire volcanic edifice of magnitude never recorded before at Mount Etna. Here we describe the evolution of the 2018 eruptive cycle from the analysis of seismic and geodetic data collected in the months preceding, during, and following the intrusion. We model the space‐time evolution of high‐rate deformation data starting from the active source previously identified from deformation data and the propagation of seismicity in a 3‐D velocity model. The intrusion model suggests emplacement of two dikes: a smaller dike located beneath the eruptive fissure and a second, deeper dike between 1 and 5 kmbelow sea level that opened ~2 m. The rise and eruption of magma from the shallower dike did not interrupt the pressurization of a long‐lasting deeper reservoir (~6 km) that induced continuous inflation and intense deformation of the eastern flank. Shortly after the intrusion, on 26 December 2018, aML4.8 earthquake occurred near Pisano, destroying buildings and roads in two villages. We propose a time‐dependent intrusion model that supports the hypothesis of the inflation inducing flank deformation and that this process has been active since September 2018.

    Beschreibung: In the last few decades, the use of GNSS Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) networks allowed improving the accuracy of realtime positioning and post-processing positioning. In this way, several applications have been performed including remote sensing, agriculture, cultural heritage and geodynamics studies. The latter have been developed analysing CORS time-series and consistent data over long periods were needed to validate the results. In Italy, specifically in Sicily, two CORS networks were be used to monitor the geodynamics motions: the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) GNSS CORS network in the eastern part and the University of Palermo (UNIPA) GNSS CORS network in the western part. In this research, preliminary results of time series about geodynamics motions of the western part of Sicily have been presented. In particular, the time series of the UNIPA GNSS CORS network have been analyzed over time by using the static positioning, over a period of approximately 5 years. Results showed a linear trend for all CORS time series, according to literature. An innovative methodology, the static Precise Point Positioning (PPP) has been also tested, to determine the time series of one CORS and compare the results with the static solution. The comparison between the two methodologies (static and PPP) demonstrated the capabilities of PPP technique with benefits in terms of costs and time.

    Beschreibung: The 2018 December 26th earthquake (MW = 4.9) at the south-eastern slope of Mt. Etna provides new insights for improving the knowledge of the kinematics of the eastern flank of the volcano. The earthquake was preceded by a seismic swarm on the upper southern-western sector of the volcano and by a short eruptive event in the summit area. The associated crustal deformation triggered seismic reactivation of tectonic structures in the eastern flank of the volcano. The seismogenic source has been localized along one of the segments cutting the south-eastern slope the volcanic edifice, the NW-SE trending Fiandaca Fault, one of the most active shear zone belonging to the upslope extension of the Timpe fault system. In the last centuries, all these faults have been the source of very shallow, low magnitude, but destructive earthquakes. In order to determine the response of the unstable eastern flank of Mt. Etna to the volcano-tectonic events, we applied a multidisciplinary approach based on: i) analysis of historical and instrumental seismicity; ii) mapping of coseismic fracturing, iii) analysis of GPS and InSAR data. This study allows to better define the seismotectonic framework of the shear zone occurring in the eastern flank of Mt. Etna, framing it in the seismogenic belt extending as far as the Ionian offshore.

    Beschreibung: The presence of volcanic ash in the signal path between a GPS satellite and a ground-based receiver strongly correlates with a decrease in GPS signal strength. This effect has been seen in data collected from GPS sites located near active volcanoes; however, the sparse placement of existing GPS sites limits the applicability of this technique as an ash plume detection method to relatively few well-instrumented volcanoes. This deficiency has motivated the development of a low-cost distributed sensor system based on navigation-grade GPS receivers, which can take advantage of attenuated GPS signals to increase the quality and availability of real-time ash plume observations during an eruption. This GPS-based system has been designed specifically to meet remote sensing needs while operating autonomously in difficult conditions and minimizing on-site infrastructure requirements. Prototypes of this system have undergone long-term testing and the data collected from this testing have been used to develop the additional processing steps necessary to account for the different behavior of navigation grade GPS equipment compared to the geodetic equipment used at existing GPS sites.

    Beschreibung: We present the results of the analysis of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and InSAR (Interferometric synthetic-aperture radar) data collected in the frame of a project financed by the “Struttura Terremoti” of INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia). Combined investigations pointed out for potential seismogenic sources for destructive earthquakes recorded in southwestern Sicily, including the 1968 Belice earthquake sequence and that supposed to have destroyed the Greek city of Selinunte which, according to geoarcheological data experienced two earthquakes in historical times. Our approach is aimed to evaluate the current deformation rate in SW Sicily and to improve the knowledge about the seismic potential of this area. The geodetic data proposed in this paper show that the Campobello di Mazara–Castelvetrano alignment (CCA) is currently deforming with a vertical and horizontal displacements of 2 mm/yr and 0.5 mm/yr respectively, according to the tectonic setting of the area.
