Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: Translation of the abstract: The monograph is devoted to identifying the relationship in time and space of the Siberian Platform and the Sayan-Baikal fold system. The main attention is paid to the analysis of the structure and development of marginal platform structures of the first order, represented here by the marginal suture, Riphean mioreosynclines, Riphean volcanic belts, Lower Paleozoic foredeeps and post-Paleozoic foredeeps. It is shown that the Riphean miogeosynclines of Siberia and the edge troughs of the Angarolena type, together with the troughs of the Ural and Carpathian types, constitute a historical series of edge structures of platforms, reflecting the direction and stage of development of the Earth.

Notes: Some of the problems encountered in adhesive bonding of plastic attachments to human tooth surfaces were investigated. Acrylic adhesives based on poly(methyl methacrylate)-methyl methacrylate monomer mixtures with benzoyl peroxide initiation and N,N-dimethylaniline acceleration were utilized. Both homopolymers and copolymers were investigated. Recently extracted upper central incisors were employed in the bonding experiments. Bond strengths were improved by pretreating the tooth surfaces with mineral acids such as H3PO4. Surface wetting by the liquid adhesive was shown to be improved by the acid treatment. The molecular weight of polymer or copolymer employed in the liquid adhesive had an important effect on bond strengths. The optimum molecular weight for obtaining maximum bond strengths was around 20,000 g./mole. Water immersion of the bonded specimens at 37°C. for periods up to 6 weeks had a deleterious effect on bond strengths. Nevertheless, it was shown that some of the adhesives formed reasonably strong bonds for periods exceeding 6 months even with water immersion.

Description: One of the key performance requirements for different control systems is non-overshooting step response, so that the controllable value should not overcome the reference value within a transient process. The problem of providing a non-overshooting step response was examined in this paper. Despite much scientific research being dedicated to the overshoot elimination problem, there are little to no results regarding parametric uncertainty for the discussed problem. Consideration of parametric uncertainty, particularly in the form of interval-given parameters, is essential, since in many physical processes, electronic devices and control systems parameter values can be obtained with acceptable error, and they can vary under different conditions. The main result of our research is the development of a proportional-integral-derivative (PID)-controller tuning approach for systems with interval-given parameters that provides a non-overshooting step response for such classes of control systems. This paper investigates analytical conditions and constraints for linear time invariant (LTI) systems in order to have no overshoot, enhances them with respect to parametric uncertainty, and formulates rules for tuning choices of parameters.

Description: Human gut microbiota development has been associated with healthy growth but understanding the determinants of community assembly and composition is a formidable challenge. We cultured bacteria from serially collected fecal samples from a healthy infant; 34 sequenced strains containing 103,102 genes were divided into two consortia representing earlier and later stages in community assembly during the first six postnatal months. The two consortia were introduced alone (singly), or sequentially in different order, or simultaneously into young germ-free mice fed human infant formula. The pattern of fitness of bacterial strains observed across the different colonization conditions indicated that later-phase strains substantially outcompete earlier-phase strains, although four early-phase members persist. Persistence was not determined by order of introduction, suggesting that priority effects are not prominent in this model. To characterize succession in the context of the metabolic potential of consortium members, we performed in silico reconstructions of metabolic pathways involved in carbohydrate utilization and amino acid and B-vitamin biosynthesis, then quantified the fitness (abundance) of strains in serially collected fecal samples and their transcriptional responses to different histories of colonization. Applying feature-reduction methods disclosed a set of metabolic pathways whose presence and/or expression correlates with strain fitness and that enable early-stage colonizers to survive during introduction of later colonizers. The approach described can be used to test the magnitude of the contribution of identified metabolic pathways to fitness in different community contexts, study various ecological processes thought to govern community assembly, and facilitate development of microbiota-directed therapeutics.
