Notizen: Abstract Crude benzene extracts of 6 non-host trees alone did not stimulate feeding responses by adults of Scolytus multistriatus (Marsh.). When combined equally with a stimulatory extract from Ulmus americana L., all of the crude non-host extracts reduced the amount of feeding which otherwise occurred. At least two of the non-hosts (Populus deltoides Bartr. and Aesculus octandra Marsh) contained positive short-range orientational stimuli, but their induction of a positive response by the insect was prevented in most treatments by associated deterrent chemicals. Thus, stimuli (deterrents and repellents) played the dominant role in eliciting the rejection of crude non-host extracts by the beetles.

Notizen: Summary This paper contains the mathematical validation of a new approach to mathematical programming problems based on a penalty function method. The given problem is replaced by a second „auxiliary“ problem which, in many cases may be solved by standard methods since it involves the maximization of a concave function of a single variable over an interval. The auxiliary problem is defined implicitly in therms of the constituents of the original problem. Examples are presented in order to illustrate the theoretical results.

Notizen: Summary Etiolation of Todea barbara sporophytes and the subsequent deetiolation of excised leaf blades have been studied. In etiolated plants leaf blade growth is arrested, petiole and stem growth is enhanced, and root growth is decreased. De-etiolation permits the resumption of leaf blade growth and differentiation, and the resulting de-etiolated blade appears comparable to its light-grown counterpart in every respect but cell number. Only two factors are required to attain maximum surface area growth in cultured leaf blades; these are light and sucrose. The addition of plant growth substances does not increase the final area attained. However, the inhibition of leaf blade growth with growth retardants and its partial reversal by exogenously supplied gibberellic acid demonstrates a role for gibberellins in leaf expansion in Todea.

Notizen: Abstract Electrophoretic separation of house mouse (Mus musculus) hemoglobins on starch gel in a 0.2 M tris maleate NaOH pH 7.0 buffer facilitates the recognition of the three phenotypes controlled by locus Hbb. Evidence that Hbb does control the electrophoretic patterns with this buffer system is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Three different allelic isozyme systems (two esterases, ESH and ESR, and a malic dehydrogenase, MDH) were analyzed in population samples of a species of ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus, from Texas. Allelic frequencies were determined for several collection localities, and a number of significant differences were found. Principal component analysis was used to compare the patterns of variability of the allelic frequencies with environmental factors. Significant correlation was particularly evident with respect to weather and the pattern of variability in both esterases, and it is therefore suspected that natural selection is important in determining the allele frequency patterns. Observed and expected genotypic proportions were found in good agreement, generally, but in some localities homozygotes appeared in significantly greater numbers than expected. Heterotic selective maintenance was thus not indicated. Correlation found between patterns of variability in the enzyme systems themselves was consistent with the hypothesis that all three enzyme systems were affected by the environmental factors.

Notizen: Abstract The intensity variation at the sun's limb has been studied in order to derive the gradient of the temperature in the low chromosphere. Eclipse observations show that in the continuum the height gradients of the total intensity vary systematically with wavelength; the observed gradient in the red is found to be steeper than in the blue. This wavelength dependence of the gradients is explained by the temperature increase in the low chromosphere.

Notizen: Summary The development of neuroglia has been studied in rat optic nerves with the electron and light microscopes. The main findings of this investigation are as follows: 1. Transitional forms between the cell varieties present during development suggest a direct lineage from the neuroectodermal matrix cells lining the lumen of the optic stalk to all neuroglial cell types. There was no evidence of mesenchymal cell invasion, either from the meninges or blood vessels, into optic nerve parenchyma. 2. One variety of undifferentiated cells, namely the small glioblasts, may have the potential to either remain in the mitotic cycle giving rise to additional glioblasts, or to differentiate into either astrocytes or oligodendrocytes. Some small glioblasts are retained in fully mature rat optic nerves as a third type of neuroglia and these cells might be a source of the additional oligodendrocytes and/or astrocytes that arise within adult central nervous tissue. 3. Astrocytes begin to appear during fetal development. Oligodendrocytes first appear just prior to the time when myelination begins (i.e. 7–9 days postnatal). The early postnatal oligodendrocytes that are forming myelin sheaths are markedly different in appearance from those in mature nerves.

Beschreibung: We measured soil shear strength (SSS) from 2009 to 2018 in two hydrologically distinct freshwater marshes dominated by Panicum hemitomon after nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) were applied to the surface in spring. The SSS averaged over 100-cm depth in the floating and anchored marshes declined up to 30% throughout the profiles and with no apparent differences in the effects of the low, medium, and high N + P dosing. Plots with only N or P additions exhibited significant changes in SSS at individual depths below 40 cm for the anchored marsh, but not the floating marsh. The average SSS for the anchored marsh over the entire 100 cm profile declined when N and P were added separately or together. At the floating marsh, however, the SSS decreased when N and P were added in combination, or P alone, but not for the N addition. Increasing nutrient availability to these freshwater marsh soils makes them weaker, and perhaps lost if eroded or uplifted by buoyant forces during storms. These results are consistent with results from multi-year experiments demonstrating higher decomposition rates, greenhouse gas emissions, and carbon losses in wetlands following increased nutrient availability.
