Summary The heat balance of waters is mainly determined by heat exchange processes at their surface. It may be characterized by the total heat flux, the equilibrium temperature and the total exchange coefficient. For rivers, the concepts of relaxation time and relaxation surface are derived. The latter is physically more justifiable and better suited for practical applications. Under certain conditions it applies also to lakes, yielding a method for estimating their disjunctive effect. A section is devoted to the annual and daily variations of equilibrium temperature; the amplitude of these variations may be computed theoretically from precision records of water temperature. Some concluding remarks refer to the dissipation of waste heat from nuclear power plants.
