    Evaluation of macrophyte control in 38 Florida lakes using triploid grass carp (2021)

    Description: Florida’s large number of shallow lakes, warm climate andlong growing season have contributed to the development ofexcessive growths of aquatic macrophytes that have seriouslyinterfered with many water use activities. The introductionof exotic aquatic macrophyte species such as hydrilla (Hydrillaverticillata) have added significantly to aquatic plant problemsin Florida lakes. The use of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodonidella) can be an effective and economical control for aquaticvegetation such as hydrilla. Early stocking rates (24 to 74grass carp per hectare of lake area) resulted in grass carpconsumption rates that vastly exceeded the growth rates ofthe aquatic plants and often resulted in the total loss of allsubmersed vegetation. This study looked at 38 Florida lakesthat had been stocked with grass carp for 3 to 10 years withstocking rates ranging from 〈 1 to 59 grass carp per hectareof lake and 1 to 207 grass carp per hectare of vegetation todetermine the long term effects of grass carp on aquatic macrophytecommunities. The median PAC (percent area coverage)value of aquatic macrophytes for the study lakes afterthey were stocked with grass carp was 14% and the medianPVI (percent volume infested) value of aquatic macrophyteswas 2%. Only lakes stocked with less than 25 to 30 fish perhectare of vegetation tended to have higher than medianPAC and PVI values. When grass carp are stocked at levels of〉 25 to 30 fish per hectare of vegetation the complete controlof aquatic vegetation can be achieved, with the exception ofa few species of plants that grass carp have extreme difficultyconsuming. If the management goal for a lake is to controlsome of the problem aquatic plants while maintaining asmall population of predominately unpalatable aquaticplants, grass carp can be stocked at approximately 25 to 30fish per hectare of vegetation.

    Description: A common property resource with open access, such as a fishery, will be used to excess when faced with sufficient demand. This will lead to an excessive amount of effort on the part of the fishery, resulting in a depletion of the stock. This paper discusses the development of a property rights regime for the Atlantic calico scallop, Argopecten gibbus, fishery of Florida. The management solution of the Calico Scallop Conservation Association (CSCA) provides an example of the assignment of property rights to a common property resource without resorting to governmental intervention. In this particular fishery, self-regulation limited early harvesting which would be uneconomic; there may be other fisheries in which self-regulation could be economically efficient and biologically appropriate. While this solution may not be applicable to all common property resources, for those cases which may be similar; the example of the CSCA provides valuable information that may be helpful in establishing a more efficient use of the resource. Some types of government facilitation may also be useful.

    Notes: Fully developed forced-convective heat transfer to viscous flow of a constant-property Newtonian fluid in curved circular tubes was studied theoretically for a uniform-wall-temperature boundary condition. Numerical solutions were obtained over a wide range of Prandtl numbers for Dean numbers as large as 1,200. The curvature ratio (radius of bend/inside radius of tube) was included as an independent parameter and, for values as small as 10, was found to have a negligible effect on the peripherally averaged Nusselt number. The average Nusselt numbers for the important Prandtl number range of 0.7 to 5 were correlated by NNu = 0.836 NDe0.5 NPr0.1 for NDe ≥ 80.

    Notes: An improved procedure is presented for the calculation of detailed steady-state temperature distributions throughout the human body. The efficacy of the proposed computation procedure is demonstrated by comparison of calculated and experimental results for seven studies conducted on four subjects. Core temperatures were predicted within ±0.2°C and deviations for individual skin temperatures generally were within ±0.5°C.

    Notes: An investigation of the mass and heat transfer equations describing radial and axial profiles for tubular reactors in laminar and plug flow is reported. Reactor conditions evaluated were isothermal, constant wall temperature, and adiabatic. Both diffusion and nondiffusion were considered. The reaction investigated was the demethylation of toluene in the presence of hydrogen.It was found that diffusion plays only a minor role in laminar flow for the conditions investigated. It was also found that isothermal and constant wall temperature reactor operation affected the temperature and concentration profiles very little when r/R was less than 0.6.
