Notes: Abstract Velocity profiles and turbulence levels have been investigated in a Mach 2 wind-tunnel using a laser anemometer which directly measures the Doppler frequency shift in the scattered laser light. The experiments were performed with the wind-tunnel operating at normal humidity. However, ice particles were always produced in the supersonic throat, making artificial seeding unnecessary. These ice particles proved to be excellent light scattering centres, and were found to respond to the rapid velocity change occurring in an oblique shock wave in a distance 〈0.01 cm, from which the ice particle size was calculated to be 〈0.1μ. Measurements were made across a turbulent boundary layer and compared with Pitot tube data taken under similar conditions. Measurements were also made in a highly turbulent Mach 1 free jet.

Notes: Abstract The radial growth rate of crystalline areas during the anodization of tantalum is found to be related to the nature and concentration of both the solute and the solvent and also to the pH of the electrolyte. In general, the use of high solute concentrations or the addition of certain organic solvents produces reduced growth rates in aqueous electrolytes. Structural examinations indicate that for bright rolled tantalum foil of nominal purity 99.99%, the density of nucleation sites is approximately 107 cm−2, of which about 1% undergo active radial growth. The nucleation sites, which can be related to impurity inclusions, are believed to maintain contact with the electrolyte through narrow pores. As the amorphous oxide is rolled back by the growing crystals, a layer of relatively uniform thickness is stripped from the top surface of the crystalline area and remains in intimate contact with the detached amorphous oxide. The use of field crystallization to study the location and distribution of impurities at both exterior and interior surfaces of sintered powder anodes is described.

Notes: Abstract The ‘Norbide’ boron carbide electrode has been satisfactorily applied to polarographic studies of Pd(II)−Pd° and some other systems involving deposition of metal. By its means the following thermodynamic and kinetic data have been established: standard oxidation-reduction potentials, Pd2+−Pd°, 0.91 V; Ag+−Ag°, 0.805 V; stability constants, PdCl 4 2− , logβ 4, 9·38; logK 4, 1·44; Pd(SO4) 2 2− , log β2, 3·16; activation energies, Pd2+−Pd°:Q D, 18·6; Q°, 188 kJ mole−1. Analytical applications have been briefly examined.

Notes: Abstract The ‘Norbide’, boron carbide, electrode has been shown to be exceptionally good in terms of its chemical inertness, rapid response and high hydrogen overvoltage. It has been applied especially in potentiometric and polarographic studies of the Ir(IV)-Ir(III) system in various media. By its means, supported by evidence from use of other cathodes, certain previous work has been confirmed and standard or formal redox potentials of the following systems have been determined: Ir(IV)-Ir(III)-ClO 4 − (M HClO4, 1·27 V; Ir (IV)-Ir(III)-SO 4 2− (0·18M H2SO4), 1·08 V; Ir(IV)-Ir(III)-PO 4 3− (0·3M H3PO4), provisionally 0·99 V; IrCl 6 2− -IrCl 6 3− (0·1M NaClO4 or NaCl), 0·899 V; IrBr 6 2− -IrBr 6 2− (0·1M NaClO4or NaBr), 0·838 V. The potentials fall in the expected sequence. The possibility of analytical application of the ‘Norbide’ and rotating platinum electrode has also been examined.

Notes: Summary The familiar idea of mass action kinetics is extended to embrace situations more general than chemically reacting mixtures in closed vessels. Thus, for example, many reaction regions connected by convective or diffusive mass transport, such as the cellular aggregates of biological tissue, are drawn into a common mathematical scheme. The ideas of chemical thermodynamics, such as the algebraic nature of the equilibrium conditions and the decreasing property of the free energy, are also generalized in a natural way, and it is then possible to identify classes of generalized kinetic expressions which ensure consistency with the extended thermodynamic conditions. The principal result of this work shows that there exists a simply identifiable class of kinetic expressions, including the familiar detailed balanced kinetics as a proper subclass, which ensure consistency with the extended thermodynamic conditions. For kinetics of this class, which we call complex balanced kinetics, exotic behavior such as bistability and oscillation is precluded, so the domain of search for kinetic expressions with this type of behavior, which is of considerable biological interest, is greatly narrowed. It is also shown that the ideas of complex balancing and of detailed balancing are closely related to symmetry under time reversal.
