Notes: Summary The toadfish lens epithelium is essentially amitotic from January to May. From June to August mitotic activity is noted. The onset of proliferation approximately corresponds to the time of year when the fish enter the shallow water to spawn. The epithelial mitotic response to needle injury is not propagated in a wave-like manner from the site of insult.

Notes: Abstract In the standard treatment of weak-coupling superconductors, the pair potential enters as a nondiagonal but local potential. It is shown that for a pure, weak-coupling, bulk, single-crystal superconductor the quasiparticle wave functions are then Bloch functions and the self-consistent pair potential is periodic in space with the periodicity of the crystal structure. The relation between this periodic character of the pair potential and energy gap structure is discussed, and it is pointed out that energy gap structure of the general character expected appears to have been observed. The validity of a local pair potential is also briefly considered.

Notes: Abstract The connection between the characteristic features of reactions involving very heavy target-projectile combinations (e.g.86Kr+197Au) and lighter systems (e.g.40Ar+natAg) is discussed. Evidence for an empirical scaling law based upon the ratioE/B (center-of-mass kinetic energy to Coulomb barrier) is presented. This scaling is justified in terms of semiquantitative arguments whereby the different charge and angular distribution patterns from light and heavy target-projectile combinations are correlated with different lifetime regimes for the “intermediate complex” as it diffuses along the mass-asymmetry coordinate.

Notes: Abstract Considering the Feynman path integral representation for the configuration-space density matrix for an ensemble of anharmonic oscillators, we determine the ‘stationary paths’ near which the integrand remains stationary. By taking the path integral to be saturated by contributions from the neighborhood of the path which maximizes the integrand we evaluate the density matrix explicitly in analytic form. This seems to be the first such evaluation of a path integral for a system not describable by a quadratic Hamiltonian. We also comment briefly on the question of analyticity with respect to the perturbation parameter.

Notes: Abstract Operation of a monostatic acoustic sounder on the campus of The University of Calgary for the period March to September, 1976, has provided data on the atmospheric boundary layer over Calgary. The formation and dissipation of the nocturnal temperature inversion layer leaves a clear signature in the sounder records. A trend is discerned in which the nocturnal layer tends to form at sunset, whereas convective instability is established some 2–3 hours after sunrise. Comparison of sounder records with an extensive set of radiosonde temperature profiles has shown that the height of the inversion layer can be determined reliably when a single, dark, ground-based return is visible on the sounder charts. On many occasions, however, the sounder detects multiple structures in the atmosphere. In these cases, it is difficult to establish a systematic correspondence of the turbulent structure as observed in the sounder records with the temperature profile as observed by the radiosonde.

Notes: Abstract Chlorinated stream water toxicity was tested on the blind cave crayfish Orconectes australis australis from Merrybranch Cave, White County, Tennessee. An undisturbed natural cavern, Merry-branch was formed between two strata of sandstone having a mean elevation of 354 meters (MSL). Test water was collected from a subterranian stream in the cave supporting the hypogean crayfish population, and transported to the laboratory. No chlorinity was detected in the underground stream water. In the laboratory, cave water was chlorinated with sodium hypechlorus solution at various concentrations of total residual chlorine, combined residual, and free chlorine content as measured by Standard Methods titration procedure. Thirty-six crayfish, six crayfish per test solution, were subjected to a three day acclimation period at chlorine concentrations ranging from 0.21–1.50 mg./l. total residual chlorine, 0.20–0.30 mg./l. combined residual chlorine, and 0.01–1.20 mg./l. free chlorine; and then subjected t0 a 24 hour time-to-death (hourly) bioassay at the following chlorine water dilutions (mg./l.): (1) 7.45 total residual, 0.45 combined residual, and 7.00 free, (2) 3.39 total residual, 0.39 combined residual, and 3.00 free, (3) 2.85 total residual, 0.35 combined residual, and 2.50 free, (4) 2.30 total residual, 0.30 combined residual, and 2.00 free, (5) t.96 total residual, 0.21 combined residual, and 1.75 free, and (6) control. Fluctuations within these concentrations ranged from ± 0.20 free chlorine. All test solutions and a control were delivered by an Esvelt serial diluter. In addition, a 24 hour time-to-death (hourly) bioassay was conducted at the same dilutions 0n crayfish not acclimated to chlorine. These test demonstrated that crayfish mortalities generally increased with increasing concentrations of chlorine in both bio-assays, while acclimated crayfish tended to be more tolerant than non-acclimated ones.

Notes: Abstract Shape factor analysis of the beta transitions in149Pm is carried out for the first time, employing an intermediate image beta ray spectrometer. The ambigous situation arising from the disagreement between reported values in end point energies and intensities of the beta transitions is clarified. An attempt was made to evaluate the NME, for the 780 keV beta transition, using Simms formalism.

Notes: Abstract Singles and coincidence charge distributions are combined to illustrate the mechanism for the 220-MeV40Ar+238U reaction. It is found that the apparent peak in the coincidence fragment distribution corresponding toZ=82 (A=208) can be explained in terms of the fissionability of the target-like fragments produced in deep-inelastic collisions rather than as a manifestation of shell effects in compound-nucleus fission, as has been postulated for a similar system.
