Notes: A technique for adhesion of fine particles (ca. 5 μ) of the 405 white diatomaceous support on the inner wall of glass tube with organic glue [poly (diethylaminoethyl methacrylate) acetate] is described. The coated tube was drawn to capillary column by using a machine designed according to Desty's. The capillary column was then coated with stationary phase (such as squaiane, QF-1, Dexsil 300, PEG 20 M, OV-1, SE 30 and etc.) by the conventional dynamic or static method. This preparation method has proved easy to duplicate and is simple. The coating efficiency (UTE %) is within 60-90. The theoretical plate number per meter of an SE 30 column is about 4000, and per meter of a PEG 20 M column is about 2500. The columns thus prepared have been successfully used to analyze petroleum hydrocarbons, essential oils, petrochemicals, pheromone, steroid metabolites and others.

Notes: The influence of the chain conformation on the ν1 and ν13 normal modes of the benzene ring in atactic and isotactic polystyrene and their model compounds has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The ν1 mode which appears in the 750-800 cm-1 region is influenced as much by the local conformation of the alkyl chain as by the length of the considered conformational structure along the chain. The ν13 mode which appears in the 1195-1215 cm-1 region is only influenced by the local conformation and is insensitive to the length of the alkyl chain.

Notes: Resonance Raman spectra are reported for potassium manganate powder employing a number of exciting frequencies within the electronic absorption region of the material. In analyzing the observed variations in the relative intensities for resonance effects we have considered δM/δq (M = transition moment and q = normal coordinate) as the dominant term in the theoretical derivation of the expression for Raman intensity. This approach leads to excellent agreement between the experimental intensity data on both the fundamental as well as the first overtone of the symmetric stretching mode of the MnO42- ion and the derived theoretical expressions.

Notes: The resonance Raman effect is reported for the bipyridyl ligand vibrations in the complexes {Fe(bipy)3}+2, {Fe(bipy)2(CN)2} and {Fe(bipy)(CN)4}-2. The Raman spectra were obtained using exciting laser line frequencies coincident with the visible metal-ligand charge transfer absorption bands. The identity of the resonantly enhanced Raman bands is correlated with the nature of the absorption bands. The resonantly enhanced excitation profiles of the bipyridyl vibrations are analyzed in terms of the theory of resonance Raman scattering. The results indicate that the high frequency components of these bands are primarily due to a superposition of the vibrational progressions of the symmetric ligand stretching modes and not due to additional charge transfer absorptions.
