Description: Mass mortality of stinging catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis, was observed in a fish farm of Kulgaria, Burdwan in West Bengal, India. The cumulative mortality rates reached up to 5% of the total fish in the farm per day. The clinical signs of the affected fish showed ulcers on the skin which gradually grew in size and progressed to form ulcerous dermatitis. Clinical signs of catfish experimentally infected with the isolate were similar to those observed in the affected fish of the fish farm. The isolate was identified as Bacillus cereus through biochemical tests and analysis of the isolate by 16S rDNA sequences (97%). With dip treatment (10 min/day) from day 5 to day 15 with Argemone mexicana 1 g/L chloroform:methanol seed extracts, the mortality rate decreased and the treated fish gradually recovered on day 15 and their ulcers completely healed on day 21. The hematological values attained following treatment were very close to that of the normal values (p〉0.05). This study is the first time report of B. cereus acting as a pathogen in fish and causing mortality in any fish farm.

Notes: Some three-component random phenolic copolymers were prepared from three typical phenolic monomers; for example, p-chlorophenol, p-aminophenol, and p-cresol. Several samples of the copolymer were prepared by changing the feed composition and the composition of the copolymers was established by estimating —NH2 and —OH groups by electrometric titration techniques in nonaqueous media. Halogen was estimated by Volhard's method. The average degree of polymerization (DP) of the copolymers was calculated from the features of the electrometric titration curves, and the effects of monomer functional groups on the composition of the copolymers were interpreted in terms of the electron-donating and electron-attracting nature of the substituents present in the monomers.

Notes: The Kelen-Tüdös linear graphical method was used to determine the copolymerization parameters of some halogen-substituted (e.g., Cl, Br, I) aniline monomers. It was found during copolymerization with p-aminobenzoic acid or p-aminophenol that the reactivity of these monomers followed the order of their basic strength. The order of their basic strength. The order of their reactivity, however, was reversed if they copolymerized with sulfanilic acid (SA). This reversal has been interpreted in terms of the resonance stabilization of monomers, the nature of the acidic functional groups present in the comonomer, and the influence of electron-accepting or electron-donating groups present in the comonomers.

Notes: A study was made of interpolymer complex formation between polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with phenolic polymers (PPF) in an acetone-methanol mixture by several methods; for example, viscosity, potentiometry, conductometry, turbidity, and precipitate (complex) weight. A distinct stepwise complex formation between PVP and phenolic polymers was observed by these methods. As in polycarboxylic acid, however, PEO formed a 1:1 complex with phenolic polymers. Some of these observations have been interpreted in terms of the structure of the polymers, preferential solvation of the component polymers, and the probable change in conformation of the complex molecules in mixed solvents.

Notes: p-Aminobenzoic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and formaldehyde were condensed in various molar proportions in the presence of acid catalyst to obtain copolymers of various compositions. Conductometric and potentiometric titrations were carried out on seven copolymers having different feed compositions in nonaqueous solvents with acid as well as base. The titration curves indicated a large number of additional breaks inflections before the complete neutralization of COOH, OH, or NH2 groups. These observations have been interpreted in terms of degree of polymerization, composition, and structure of the copolymers.

Notes: Interpolymer complex formation has been studied between methacrylic acid-methacrylamide copolymer and acrylic acid-acrylamide copolymer. The respective co-monomer units of the two copolymers enter into complex formation through H-bonding and ion dipole interactions. The unreacted units in the copolymer complex also interact with homopolymers such as PEO and PVP to form ternary complex. Formation of complexes and replacement reactions could be shown through several experimental techniques, e.g., viscometry, conductometry, and potentiometry.

Notes: p-Aminobenzoic acid and formaldehyde were condensed in the presence of acid catalyst. The linear condensation polymer thus obtained was then separated into four fractions by a fractional precipitation method. Conductometric titrations were carried out on these four polymer fractions and the conglomerate in nonaqueous solvents with acid as well as base. The titration curves indicated a large number of additional breaks before the complete neutralization of COOH or NH2 groups. These observations have been interpreted in terms of degree of polymerization and the structure of the polymer.
