Notizen: [Auszug] At the Provincial Fisheries Institute, Lydenburg, fishponds that have been dry for the winter are filled with water and fertilized with fowl manure in spring for the breeding of fish. Within 2 or 3 days after fertilization such ponds usually contain large numbers of Xenopus, which immediately start ...

Beschreibung: Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite products constitute valuable precipitation datasets over regions with sparse rain gauge networks. Downscaling is an effective approach to estimating the precipitation over ungauged areas with high spatial resolution. However, a large bias and low resolution of original TRMM satellite images constitute constraints for practical hydrologic applications of TRMM precipitation products. This study contributes two precipitation downscaling algorithms by exploring the nonstationarity relations between precipitation and various environment factors [daytime surface temperature (LTD), terrain slope, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), altitude, longitude, and latitude] to overcome bias and low-resolution constraints of TRMM precipitation. Downscaling of precipitation is achieved with the geographically weighted regression model (GWR) and the backward-propagation artificial neural networks (BP_ANN). The probability density function (PDF) algorithm corrects the bias of satellite precipitation data with respect to spatial and temporal scales prior to downscaling. The principal component analysis algorithm (PCA) provides an alternative method of obtaining accurate monthly rainfall estimates during the wet rainfall season that minimizes the temporal uncertainties and upscaling effects introduced by direct accumulation (DA) of precipitation. The performances of the proposed downscaling algorithms are assessed by downscaling the latest version of TRMM3B42 V7 datasets within Hubei Province from 0.25° (about 25 km) to 1-km spatial resolution at the monthly scale. The downscaled datasets are systematically evaluated with in situ observations at 27 rain gauges from the years 2005 through 2010. This paper’s results demonstrate the bias correction is necessary before downscaling. The high-resolution precipitation datasets obtained with the proposed downscaling model with GWR relying on the NDVI and slope are shown to improve the accuracy of precipitation estimates. GWR exhibits more accurate downscaling results than BP_ANN coupled with the genetic algorithm (GA) in most dry and wet seasons.

Beschreibung: Mesoscale activities over the equatorial Pacific Ocean are dominated by the Rossby and Yanai modes of tropical instability waves (TIWs). The TIW-induced surface velocity has not been accurately estimated in previous diagnostic models, especially for the meridional component across the equator. This study develops a diagnostic model that retains the acceleration terms to estimate the TIW surface velocity from the satellite-observed sea surface height. Validated against moored observations, the velocity across the equator is accurately estimated for the first time, much improved from existing products. The results identify the Rossby- and Yanai-mode TIWs as the northwest-southeastward (NW-SE) velocity oscillations north of the equator and the northeast-southwestward (NE-SW) velocity oscillations on the equator, respectively. Barotropic instability is the dominant energy source of the two TIW modes. The NE-SW velocity oscillation of the Yanai mode is associated with the counterclockwise shear of the South Equatorial Current on the equator. The two TIW modes induce different sea surface temperature patterns and vertical motions. Accurate estimates of TIW velocity are important for studying equatorial ocean dynamics and climate variability in the tropical Pacific Ocean.

Beschreibung: Land surface temperature Ts and near-surface air temperature Ta are two main metrics that reflect climate change. Recently, based on in situ observations, several studies found that Ts warmed much faster than Ta in China, especially after 2000. However, we found abnormal jumps in the Ts time series during 2003–05, mainly caused by the transformation from manual to automatic measurements due to snow cover. We explore the physical mechanism of the differences between automatic and manual observations and develop a model to correct the automatic observations on snowy days in the observed records of Ts. Furthermore, the nonclimatic shifts in the observed Ts were detected and corrected using the RHtest method. After corrections, the warming rates for Ts-max, Ts-min, and Ts-mean were 0.21°, 0.34°, and 0.25°C decade−1, respectively, during the 1960–2014 period. The abnormal jump in the difference between Ts and Ta over China after 2003, which was mentioned in existing studies, was mainly caused by inhomogeneities rather than climate change. Through a combined analysis using reanalyses and CMIP5 models, we found that Ts was consistent with Ta both in terms of interannual variability and long-term trends over China during 1960–2014. The Ts minus Ta (Ts − Ta) trend is from −0.004° to 0.009°C decade−1, accounting for from −3.19% to 5.93% (from −3.09% to 6.39%) of the absolute warming trend of Ts (Ta).

Beschreibung: Convection initiation (CI) and the subsequent upscale convective growth (UCG) at the coast of South China in a warm-sector heavy rainfall event are shown to be closely linked to a varying marine boundary layer jet (MBLJ) over the northern South China Sea (NSCS). To elucidate the dynamic and thermodynamic roles of the MBLJ in CI and UCG, we conducted and analyzed convection-permitting numerical simulations and observations. Compared to radar observations, the simulations captured CI locations and the following southwest–northeast-oriented convection development. The nocturnal MBLJ peaks at 950 hPa and significantly intensifies with turning from southwesterly to nearly southerly by inertial oscillation. The strengthened MBLJ promotes mesoscale ascent on its northwestern edge and terminus where enhanced convergence zones occur. Located directly downstream of the MBLJ, the coastal CI and UCG are dynamically supported by mesoscale ascent. From a thermodynamic perspective, a warm moist tongue over the NSCS is strengthened by the MBLJ-driven mesoscale ascent as well as by a high sea surface temperature. The warm moist tongue farther extends northeastward by horizontal transport and arrives at the coast where CI and UCG occur. Near the CI location, rapid development of a low-level saturated layer is mainly attributed to the mesoscale ascent and low-level moistening associated with the MBLJ. In addition, subsequent CI happens on either side of the original CI along the coast due to the delay of low-level moistening, which partly contributes to linear convective growth. Furthermore, ensemble simulations confirmed that a stronger MBLJ is more favorable to CI and UCG near the coast.
