    Description: A helicopter-borne C-band scatterometer with the capability of collecting the backscattered power as a function of range is described. This instrument was repeatedly flown from May to September 1984 to study the microwave properties of forest canopies of aspen and black spruce in the Superior National Forest in Minnesota. The characteristics of the instrument, its calibration, the data collection, and preprocessing, are described.

    Description: Radar modeling of mangal forest stands in the Sundarbans area of southern Bangladesh is discussed. The modeling uses radar system parameters with forest data on tree height, spacing, biomass, species combinations, and water content (including slightly conductive water) in leaves and trunks of the mangal. For Sundri and Gewa tropical mangal forests, six model components are proposed; the models are required to explain the contributions of various combinations of forest species in the attenuation and scattering of mangal-vegetated nonflooded or flooded surfaces. Statistical data of simulated images have been compared with those of SIR-B images both to refine the modeling procedures and to characterize the model output appropriately. The possibility of delineation of flooded or nonflooded boundaries is discussed.

    Description: Forest canopy chemistry and biomass indicators of ecosystem photosynthesis and decomposition processes are presently studied in view of Airborne Imaging Spectrometer data, which generated spectra from averaged 3 x 3 pixel areas for each of 20 sites for mutual qualitative comparison. Vegetation spectra were strongly differentiated from other cover types by an apparent absorption feature at 1500-1700 nm. Preliminary work with stepwise regression suggests that lignin may play a role in canopy reflectance, and that there is potential for remote detection of forest canopy lignin.

    Description: Recent research on the remote sensing of forest leaf and canopy biochemical contents suggests that the shortwave IR region contains this information; laboratory analyses of dry ground leaves have yielded reliable predictive relationships between both leaf nitrogen and lignin with near-IR spectra. Attention is given to the application of these laboratory techniques to a limited set of spectra from fresh, whole leaves of conifer species. The analysis of Airborne Imaging Spectrometer data reveals that total water content variations in deciduous forest canopies appear as overall shifts in the brightness of raw spectra.

    Description: Biomass of growing vegetation over large semiarid regions can be estimated by digital manipulation of data from the AVHRR on NOAA polar-orbiting satellites. Here, the African Sahel is classified using a methodology which incorporates both the normalized difference and CAUSE procedures for the monitoring of vegetation during drought conditions. Preliminary analysis of color IR photographs taken on Space Shuttle missions indicates that such photographs can be digitized, registered to maps and other images, and utilized to fill temporal gaps in the historical record of data from unmanned satellites.

    Description: A field investigation using thermal remote sensing was performed to test the feasibility of detecting the surface topography of granite bedrock beneath a thin cover of alluvium. Imagery of a region of the Mojave Desert were taken with an airborne multispectral scanner with thermal spectral bandwidths of 10.4 and 12.5 microns an instantaneous field of view of 2.5 mrad. It is suggested that a buried high thermal diffusivity horizon measurably lowers the surface temperature of the overlying lower diffusivity material during the peak of the annual heating cycle.

    Description: The environmental, geologic, meteorologic, and oceanographic phenomena documented by earth photography during the Space Shuttle STS-29 mission are reviewed. A map of the nadir point positions of earth-viewing photographs from the mission is given and color photographs of various regions are presented. The mission photographs include atmospheric dust and smoke over parts of Africa and Asia, Sahelian water sites, center pivot irrigation fields in the Middle East, urban smog over Mexico City, isolated burning in the Bolivian Amazon, and various ocean features and cloud formations.

    Description: Consideration is given to the possibility of using Landsat TM data to detect differences and changes in the leaf area index (LAI) of closed canopy pine plantations in central Massachusetts. Field measurements of the LAI were obtained using locally-derived allometric relationships between leaf area and trunk diameter. The relationship between the Landsat TM Band 3/Band 4 ratio and regional differences in LAI is examined. A thinning treatment was conducted to demonstrate the ability of TM to detect a known reduction in LAI. It is concluded that, for the detection of moderate changes and differences in the LAI of closed canopy pine plantations at local scales, the TM sensor is better than field measurements involving allometric equations.

    Description: Results are presented from field experiments relating spectral reflectance to intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and net CO2 exchange in a natural canopy composed of the marsh cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora). Reflectance measurements made by a hand-held radiometer with Landsat TM spectral wavebands are used to compute remote sensing indices such as the normalized difference vegetation index. Consideration is given to the impact of standing dead canopy material on the relationship between intercepted PAR and spectral vegetation indices and the impact of changes in photosynthetic efficiency on the relationship between vegetation indices and CO2 exchange rates. The results suggest that quantitative remote assessment of photosynthesis and net gas exchange in natural vegetation is feasible, especially if the analysis incorporates information on biological responses to environmental variables.
