Notes: The boundary-integral equation medthod is particularly well suited for solution of stress concentration and elastic fracture mechanics problems. The method was not previously applicable to anisotropic three dimensional problems because no efficient technique existed for calculation of the required point load solution for an infinite body. A technique has been developed to evaluate numerically the anisotropic point load soultions, and used to generate data bases for various materials. An intrpolation technique is used to evaluate the point load solutions efficiently within a higher order boundary-intgral equation code. The effectiveness of the technique is verified by solution of problems involving both uniaxial stress states and stress concentrations.

Notes: The boundary element method (BEM) has been known for some time to be extremely useful for the solution of elastic stress analysis problems involving high stress/strain gradients. In particular, the method has been extensively used for the study of both two and three-dimensional fracture mechanics problems. Recent analytical and numerical developments coupled with the general availability of greatly increased computing capacity have made both elastic and inelastic three-dimensional stress analysis feasible for complex geometries such as those found in gas turbine engine components. This paper summarizes the features of an advanced stress analysis method based on BEM for elastic and inelastic analyses of multizone or substructured three-dimensional solids. The elastic analyses involve isotropic or cross anisotropic media with thermal and centrifugal loading. The inelastic analyses include isotropic plasticity with variable hardening and kinematic plasticity with multiple yield surfaces.

Description: The detection of a second high-velocity bipolar flow in the dark cloud B335 located in the diffuse envelope to the east of the core is reported. This flow has the same orientation as the first one. The visual extinction in the region between the redshifted and blueshifted lobes is less than or about 1 mag and is not coincident with a condensation. The flow is not associated with any known infrared source in the IRAS catalog. The new flow is about three times older than the first, and its energetics are somewhat smaller. The flows are aligned not only with each other but also with the long axis of the structure of B335 as outlined by CO maps, suggesting that magnetic fields have a role in guiding the flow. From the presence of multiple flows and the structure of the envelope, it is concluded that B335 is at the end of its starbearing life, rather than a young cloud beginning star formation, as previously supposed.

Description: CO maps of the Bok globule B335 are presented and used to derive its density profile, mass distribution, and rotational velocity structure. It is found that the cloud is in nearly hydrostatic equilibrium with a density profile that varies roughly as r to the -1 in the core and r to the -3 in the envelope. The observed rotation is unimportant in the force balance at the present stage of evolution.

Description: Balloon observations registering scatter angles in a liquid scintillator have revealed gamma-ray bursts having energies as low as 10 to the -7th ergs per square cm. The burst distribution is graphed according to energy and frequency. The hypothesis that the bursts are galactic in origin is in good agreement with their small recorded energies and their predicted distribution on the graph.

Description: A CS map of the galactic center region is presented consisting of 15,000 spectra covering -1 deg. less than 3. deg. 6 min., -0 deg.4 min. less than b less than 0 deg. 4 min., each having an rms noise of 0.15 K in 1 MHz filters. CS is a high-excitation molecule, meaning that it is excited into emission only when the ambient density is less than n much greater than or approx. 2 x 10 to the 4th power/cu cm CS emission in the inner 2 deg. of the galaxy is nearly as pervasive as CO emission, in stark contrast to the outer galaxy where CS emission is confined to cloud cores. Galactic center clouds are on average much more dense than outer Galaxy clouds. This can be understood as a necessary consequence of the strong tidal stresses in the inner galaxy.

Description: Soft X-ray proportional-counter data for nine X-ray flares of class C1 to M1 occurring during the Skylab mission, have been analyzed to yield temperature, volume emission measure, electron density and thermal energy content. Profiles of these quantities are presented, using 1-min averages of 2.5-s resolution data. The event profiles are discussed and comparisons with previous studies made.

Description: The question is considered of whether the W-type light curves of TX Cnc result from a slightly higher temperature for the low-mass component or from a relatively strong classical gravity-darkening law. Photometric parameters for this W UMa binary area derived using light curves from four epochs exhibiting dissimilar behavior. The analysis is performed for up to five colors, and solutions are obtained by two different approaches in which the temperature difference between the components is treated as a free parameter or is determined by the surface gravitational field. The results of the second approach show that the polar effective temperature of the low-mass star is about 30 K cooler than that of the high-mass star, while the results of the first approach show the low-mass star to be 125 to 175 K hotter. Preference is given to the second approach because gravity darkening provides a simple and adequate explanation of the light curves. Epoch-to-epoch changes in the gravity-darkening and albedo parameters are taken as suggesting differences in the degree of thermal contact over a time scale of a few years.

Description: It is pointed out that V356 Sgr is an abnormal member of the Algol class of binaries. According to Popper (1955), the primary component is of spectral type B3V and is rotating rapidly, while the secondary is of type A2II and is rotating at least approximately in synchronism with the orbital motion. The system is either semidetached or quite near to being semidetached. The main anomalies are related to the ratio of eclipse depths, the very small reflection effect of the light curves, differences between the duration of the primary and the secondary eclipse, and the unusual characteristics of the primary eclipse. It is concluded that the lack of agreement between theory and observation can be due only to an important attribute of the binary which has not yet been incorporated into the theory. The peculiarities can most reasonably be explained in terms of a geometrically and optically thick disk which surrounds the primary component.
