    Notes: An FeAu ordered alloy has been fabricated artificially by depositing alternately monatomic layers of Fe and Au. Neither intermediate phase nor intermetallic compound is known for the Fe–Au system in the equilibrium state. Nevertheless, the x-ray diffraction for prepared FeAu films shows definite superlattice lines corresponding to the L10 ordered structure, and it is metastable at room temperature. The obtained FeAu ordered alloy is ferromagnetic, and it has the Fe moment of 2.5±0.3 μB, a considerably high Curie temperature over room temperature, and a large uniaxial magnetic anisotropy perpendicular to Fe and Au atomic planes. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Intersubband light absorption measurements have been performed on a series of GaAs/AlAs quantum wells with heavy delta doping of Si atoms in the range 9.0×1011–6.5×1012 cm−2. The increase of intersubband transition energy by as much as 38 meV has been observed, and attributed to the deepening of the V-shaped potential by the Si layer and to the depolarization effects. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Many cases exist where material supporting superconducting magnets at liquid helium temperature (4.2 K) are subjected to repeated applications of thermal and electromagnetic stresses. Additionally, since welding cannot be avoided, it is highly desirable that the materials used for supporting superconducting magnets possess excellent strength and toughness in addition to superior mechanical properties after heat treatment. In the current research, an austenitic stainless steel was subjected to a sensitizing heat treatment whose effects, at 4.2 K, on the tensile and the fatigue crack growth properties were clarified. Tensile ductility of the sensitized material was markedly reduced to about one-half that of the solution treated material because of an intergranular form of fracturing in such material. Fatigue crack growth rate of the sensitized material was faster than that of the solution treated material because of the tendency for cracks to develop intergranularly.

To assess the reductions in bone mass, strength, and turnover in adjuvant-induced arthritic rats and to examine the effect of a new benzamide compound, DU-6712, on these parameters, a 28-day dosing experiment was performed using 8-week-old female Lewis rats. Arthritis was induced by injecting the adjuvant into the hind paw. The age-dependent increases in the body weight, lumbar bone mineral content and density (BMC and BMD) and compressive strength were disturbed in the arthritic rats. At 14 days, the histomorphometric parameters of bone formation (BFR/BS and BFR/BV) and the serum osteocalcin levels were significantly reduced compared with the baseline controls. However, the BMC values corrected for body weight did not differ significantly between the arthritic and normal rats, and the bone minerals were not reduced compared with the baseline controls. At 28 days, the parameters of bone minerals and strength of the lumbar body in the arthritic rats, both with and without correction for body weight, were significantly reduced compared with the baseline controls. The trabecular mineralizing surface remained significantly reduced and the osteoclast numbers were increased. DU-6712 at the doses of 5, 15, and 45 mg/kg, orally administered daily from the start of the experiment, significantly prevented the development of the chronic paw edema at 28 days. The reductions in the parameters of bone minerals, strength, and trabecular bone formation, and the increase in osteoclast number were alleviated by this agent. Age-dependent increases in the lumbar height, disturbed by the adjuvant injection, were also maintained. These data indicated that a 28-day period is necessary to obtain sufficient reductions in the bone mass and strength of the lumbar body concerning the model of secondary osteoporosis in adjuvant arthritic rats. DU-6712 was able to prevent these reductions by modulating the bone turnover in this arthritis model.

    Notes: Abstract  It is well established that a full-thickness articular cartilage defect is repaired with a fibrocartilaginous tissue, cells of which are derived from undifferentiated mesenchymal stem cells in the bone marrow. To characterize the repair cells biochemically, full-thickness defects were created in rabbit knee joints and the repair tissues taken at 3, 6, and 12 weeks after surgery. The repair cells were cultured and examined biochemically to investigate the effects of four exogenous growth factors with regard to the metabolism of type II collagen and proteoglycans. A significant increase of carboxy-terminal type II procollagen peptide production was observed in the conditional medium of the repair cells, especially taken at 6 weeks after surgery, in the presence of each growth factor. Glycosaminoglycan content was also increased and proteoglycan synthesis stimulated. The repair cells taken at the early stage of the repair process could originally have more activity of type II collagen synthesis, and the growth factors used could enhance the differentiation of the repair cells in vitro.

    Notes: Abstract The human lysozyme gene, which is assembled by the stepwise ligation of chemically synthesized oligonucleotides, was introduced into tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv `SR1') by the Agrobacterium-mediated method. The introduced human lysozyme gene was highly expressed under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter, and the gene product accumulated in the transgenic tobacco plants. The transgenic tobacco plants showed enhanced resistance against the fungus Erysiphe cichoracearum – both conidia formation and mycelial growth were reduced, and the size of the colony was diminished. Microscopic observation revealed that the transgenic tobacco plants carried the resistant phenotype, analogous to that of the resistant cultivar `Kokubu' which had been selected by conventional breeding. Growth of the phytopathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci was also strongly retarded in the transgenic tobacco, and the chlorotic halo of the disease symptom was reduced to 17% of that observed in the wild-type tobacco. Thus, the introduction of a human lysozyme gene is an effective approach to protect crops against both fungal and bacterial diseases.

    Notes: Abstract We have isolated the arpA gene from Aspergillus oryzae as a homologue of the Neurospora crassa ro-4 gene. In N. crassa, mutations in the ro-4 gene, which encodes a major component of the dynactin complex Arp1, causes curling of hyphae and abnormalities in nuclear distribution. The arpA gene contains two introns and encodes a polypeptide of 381 amino acids, with a 78% sequence identity to the N. crassa Arp1. Overexpression of the arpA gene causes a defect in nuclear migration into elongating hyphae of germlings in A. oryzae. We constructed arpA disruptant strains of A. oryzae. The arpA null mutants showed poor growth and hyper-branched mycelia, as well as a nuclear distribution defect. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the arpA null mutant has an aberrant conidiophore morphology with irregular phialides.

    Notes: Abstract We present a comprehensive analysis of the 17 August 1994 flare, the first flare imaged at millimeter (86 GHz) wavelengths. The temporal evolution of this flare displays a prominent impulsive peak shortly after 01:02 UT, observed in hard X-rays and at microwave frequencies, followed by a gradual decay phase. The gradual phase was also detected at 86 GHz. Soft X-ray images show a compact emitting region (≲20′′), which is resolved into two sources: a footpoint and a loop top source. Nonthermal emissions at microwave and hard X-ray wavelengths are analyzed and the accelerated electron spectrum is calculated. This energy spectrum derived from the microwave and hard X-ray observations suggests that these emissions were created by the same electron population. The millimeter emission during the gradual phase is thermal bremsstrahlung originating mostly from the top of the flaring loop. The soft X-rays and the millimeter flux density from the footpoint source are only consistent with the presence of a multi-temperature plasma at the footpoint.
