    Notes: The canonical commutation relations of quantum mechanics are generalized to the case where appropriate dynamical variables are angular-momentum, rotation-angle, and rotation-axis observables. To this end, SU(2) is "quantized" on the compact group manifold, according to the standard procedure of non-Abelian quantum kinematics. Quantum-kinematic invariant operators are introduced, and their commutation relations with the rotation variables are found in an explicit manner. The quantum-kinematic invariants yield superselection rules in the form of eigenvalue equations of an isotopic structure (which one should solve in the applications, in order to get multiplets that carry the irreducible representations of the underlying quantum kinematic models). A wide range of applicability of SU(2) quantum kinematics is suggested. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Theory predicts that fish should assort in shoals on the basis of similar phenotypic traits to minimize predation risk and to maximize foraging efficiency. A single phenotypic character, body size, was considered and the hypothesis tested that free-ranging fish shoals are sizeassorted. Furthermore, a second test investigated whether fish within multi-species shoals are more strongly size-assorted with conspecifics than with heterospecifics. Twelve fish shoals, each comprising two different species (golden shiner Notemigonus crysoleucas, and banded killifish Fundulus diaphanus) were caught in the littoral zone of a north temperate lake using a beach seine. Shoal membership size ranged from 36 to 776 fish, and mean standard body length of members ranged from 18 to 34 mm. Fish were assorted by body size at two different levels, namely, between shoals and at the level of species within shoals. Body sizes of shiners and killifish within shoals were significantly different in seven out of 12 shoals, with killifish being the larger species in five cases and shiners being the larger one in two cases. Because there is considerable overlap in body size between the two species in the population, the observed species-related size-assortativeness within shoals was not just the by-product of a directional size difference (between species) in the population. These findings provide strong quantitative evidence for size-sorting in free-ranging fish shoals and raise questions concerning the formation of multi-species fish shoals.

    Notes: Theoretical and empirical studies predict that there should be a decrease in hunting success of predators with increasing prey group size. Most of these studies investigated situations in which predator and prey were in full view of each other before, during and after an attack. In this study, single rock bass Ambloplites rupestris were given an opportunity to launch surprise attacks at shoals of creek chub Semotilus atromaculatus that ranged in size from two to 13 fish. There was no significant influence of either shoal size or attack distance on predator success rate and no significant relationship between attack distance and shoal size. Furthermore, it was found that the leading fish of a shoal was attacked significantly more often than fish in other shoal positions, indicating that predation risk was not shared equally among shoal members. Also, leading fish in larger shoals (eight to 13 fish) were not more likely to survive a predator attack than ones in small shoals (two to seven fish).The consequences of these results are discussed in the general context of antipredator benefits of grouping.

    Notes: Temperature and food availability are two important factors which affect fish growth and therefore are expected to influence habitat choice in fish. In this study, shoals of 16 juvenile roach, Rutilus rutilus, were given a choice between two chambers that differed in temperature by 1·5°C or 3°C whereas food availability was the same in both chambers (ratio 1 : 1) or higher in the colder one (ratio 4 : 1). The number of fish in each chamber was recorded for 10 min each during a pre-feeding, feeding and post-feeding period. Roach generally preferred the warmer over the colder chamber during the pre-feeding periods. Temperature had a significant effect on the distribution of fish during all three time periods whereas food availability was a significant factor only during the feeding period. The important role of temperature was emphasized further by the fact that a relatively small difference in the temperature gradient of 1·5°C had a stronger effect on fish distribution than a four times higher feeding rate during the feeding period. The implications for growth rates of such short-term decision-making of roach are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract  Refuge use provides a good model for the study of trade-offs between the benefits of predator avoidance and the costs of lost feeding opportunities. We manipulated the latter costs by subjecting similar-sized three-spine sticklebacks to 2 days of food deprivation followed by a 2-day re-feeding period and recorded associated changes in body weight and refuge use. Food deprivation resulted in a decrease and re-feeding in an increase in the duration of refuge use by fish. Emergence times of fish from the refuge were extremely variable (with a ratio of 1:127 between the shortest and the longest ones) but individual ranks were highly consistent between different days of testing, suggesting that emergence times were individually characteristic. Percentage weight change of fish in response to the experimental treatments also showed a high level of inter-individual variation ranging from 0–17%. A significant positive correlation was found between the percentage weight lost and the percentage decrease in emergence time from a refuge after food deprivation and similarly between the percentage weight gained and the percentage increase in refuge use after re-feeding. The relationship between energy turnover and behavioural strategies is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract It is demonstrated that optical transducers can take advantage from the outstanding optical properties of nematic liquid crystals. The measurements point out that the birefringence and the phase transition of a liquid crystal can be exploited for the threshold sensing. For that purpose a device consisting of an orientated liquid crystalline film between two crossed polarizers was used. The nematic liquid crystal was also used as a sensitive coating material on an integrated optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The calibration experiments were carried out with volatile organic solvents and different calibration curves were measured for meta-xylene and para-xylene.

    Notes: Abstract Non-Abelian quantum kinematics is applied to thePoincare group P + ↑ (1, 1),as an example of the quantization-through-the-symmetryapproach to quantum mechanics. Upon quantizing thegroup, generalized Heisenberg commutation relations are obtained, and aclosed Heisenberg–Weyl algebra follows. Then,according to the general theory, the three basicquantum-kinematic invariant operators are calculated;these afford the superselection rules for diagonalizing theincoherent rigged Hilbert space H(P + ↑ ) of the regularrepresentation. This paper examines only one of thesediagonalization schemes, while introducing a irreducible spacetime representation carried by isotopicplane-wave eigenvectors of two compatible superselectionoperators (which define a Poincare-invariant linear2-momentum). Thereafter, the principle of microcausality produces massive 2-spinor isotopic states in 1+ 1 Minkowski space. The Dirac equation is thus deducedwithin the quantum kinematic formalism, and the familiarJordan–Pauli propagation kernel in 2-dimensional spacetime is also obtained as a Hurwitzinvariant integral over the group manifold. The maininterest of this approach lies in the adoptedgroup-quantization technique, which is a strictlydeductive method and uses exclusively the assumed Poincaresymmetry.

    Notes: Abstract New plausible kinematic foundations of quantum dynamics are discussed in a heuristic manner in which the quantum rule stems directly from the non-Abelian configuration symmetries of a system. Upon quantizing the ‘complete’ configuration symmetry group itself, irreducible generalized configuration-state representations can be calculated, whose transition amplitudes yield the propagation kernel. These states results from solving a set of ‘generalized Schrödinger equations’ corresponding to the superselection rules dictated by the quantized group. The propagation kernel of the system is thus obtained as an invariant Hurwitz integral, defined over the manifold of the complete symmetry group. A heuristic argument is given in favor of this approach to non-Abelian quantum kinematics, in which sums over physical world lines are evaluated instead of sums over arbitrary paths, for obtaining the propagation kernel of quantum systems having a classical Lagrangian analog. The attained quantum kinematic formalism, however, is completely general and does not depend on this particular interpretation. Nevertheless, the heuristic argument strongly suggests that non-Abelian quantum kinematics contains the formalism of standard nonrelativistic quantum mechanics as a very special case. No examples of the issues involved are presented in this paper.
