Notes: Passive charge exchange (PCX) between neutral deuterium entering the plasma from the walls and ionized light impurities in a Tokamak Fusion Plasma have been investigated, and a comparison between the synthetic spectra and the experimental data is performed. In the core light impurities are fully stripped and may only be detected by the use of charge exchange recombination spectroscopy. Using a multichord spectrometer viewing various radial points from the edge to the plasma center intersecting the neutral beam injection path, a strong localized signal from active charge exchange (ACX) will be detected during the deexcitation process in the plasma ion. However, it is well known that passive charge exchange emission from neutral deuterium in the plasma blends the signal, and since calculations of particle densities are performed on the ACX, it is therefore of crucial importance to separate the ACX from the PCX. The spectra from the PCX component will carry line of sight integrated information about the plasma rotation velocity and the ion temperature throughout the plasma. By taking an initial estimate of the radial emissivity for the PCX into account as well as the ion temperature and plasma rotation profiles, one may perform the line integrated emission calculation over the various viewing lines through the plasma, and reconstruct a synthetic spectra for each viewing line. Since the emissivity is given by the reaction rate cross section and the densities of the participating ions one may, by inserting the synthetic emission into the measured spectra and performing a nonlinear least squares fit of the intensity, establish a more accurate assessment of the D0 density. The investigation shows good agreement between the experimentally observed PCX and the theoretical model, both in wavelength position and in spectral shape. The accuracy on the absolute value of the measured neutral density will be 50%, depending on the model of the decrease of the neutrals from the wall, and the error in the charge exchange cross section. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The stimulated Brillouin scattering threshold of focused broad-band XeCl laser radiation depends on the ratio of the coherence length to the Rayleigh range, which is affected by the transverse beam quality. With reduction of the focal length, the threshold decreases first and then reaches a nearly constant value. In addition, the energy reflectivity is increased. On the other hand, pulse shortening occurs and the phase conjugation fidelity is decreased. Separation of single lines from the structured XeCl laser spectrum improves the SBS efficiency.

Notes: Abstract. The passive satellite GFZ-1 has been orbiting the Earth since April 1995. The purpose of this mission is to improve the current knowledge of the Earth's gravity field by analysing gravitational orbit perturbations observed at unique low altitudes, below 400 km. GFZ-1 is one target of the international satellite laser ranging ground network. An evaluation of the first 30 months of GFZ-1 laser tracking data led to a new version of the global GRIM4-S4 satellite-only gravity field model: GRIM4-S4G. Information was obtained from GFZ-1 data for spherical harmonic coefficients up to degree 100, which was not possible in any earlier satellite-only gravity field solution. GFZ-1's contribution to a global 5 × 5° geoid and gravity field representations is moderate but visible with a 1 cm and 0.1 mGal gain in accuracy on a level of 75 cm and 5 mGal, respectively.

Notes: Abstract We report our recent investigations of the phase separation of liquid 3 He– 4 He mixtures in the restricted geometry of porous Vycor glass using pressure measurements. The experimental cell is entirely filled with a Vycor cylinder and closed by a cold valve. We are measuring the pressure versus temperature by means of a capacitive pressure gauge. The results are discussed in comparison with the phase separation of helium mixtures in aerogel, 1 in particular with respect to the different ratio of substrate surface to liquid volume of both glasses.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we report measurements of the damping of a vibrating wire in spin polarized liquid helium mixtures. The dilute helium solutions have been cooled by nuclear demagnetisation in high magnetic fields such that the spin polarization for a 0.04% mixture is as high 75%. A PtW alloy vibrating wire has been used to probe the viscosity of the liquid. The increase in viscosity on changing the magnetic field from 3 tesla to 11.5 tesla is a factor 3.5 at the lowest temperatures. The results are compared to theory allowing for both s-wave and p-wave scattering.

Notes: Abstract Using pulsed NMR techniques, we have measured spin diffusion in3He-3He solutions with3He concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.46%, 1.0%, 3.8% and 6.4% in a magnetic field of 8.8 Tesla for a temperature range 11 mK⩽ T ⩽ 200 mK. We observe that the temperature dependence of the transverse spin diffusion coefficient D1 deviates from that expected for an unpolarized Fermi liquid in the degenerate region in the 1.0%, 3.8% and 6.4% solutions. Moreover, by measuring both longitudinal and transverse spin diffusion coefficients in the 6.4%-mixture, we have verified experimentally the difference between them, and provided direct evidence for a field-induced anisotropy in spin diffusion. The results from the 0.05% and 0.1% solutions show agreement with the theory of Jeon and Mullin; however, no deviation of D1 from that expected in an unpolarized mixture was observed because the3He is not in the degenerate regime for these very dilute systems for the temperatures we could achieve. The analysis of our measurements in terms of the Leggett-Rice equations also yields values for the spin rotation parameter μM0. Using our results along with previous measurements at various3He concentrations, we deduce a value for the s-wave quasiparticle scattering length of a=−0.88 ± 0.05 Å.

Notes: Abstract We report on measurements of the magnetization of metal sinters made of different Ag powders with average (nominal) grain sizes of 40nm and 70nm at1.6K≤T≤250K and0≤B≤6T. Besides the dominating diamagnetism of Ag, the sinters show unexpected magnetic properties; e.g. once exposed to a magnetic field B, the sinters keep a permanent magnetic moment (in zero external field) which strongly depends on the magnitude of B. The possible impact of the unexpected magnetic properties of the Ag sinters on various experimental observations at very low temperatures, e.g. the magnetic field dependence of the thermal boundary resistance between an Ag sinter and3He at millikelvin temperatures is discussed.

Notes: Abstract During our recent high field pulsed NMR experiments on a spin-polarized saturated3He-4He solution, we observed a long-lived oscillating signal in addition to the usual spin-echo. The oscillations were excited by the application of a single RF tipping pulse of angle greater than some critical value. They were obseravble only for temperatures below 20mK corresponding to values of the spin-rotation parameter μMo ≥3. The signals were not present during experiments on lower concentration solutions. The frequencies of the oscillations were found to scale as the cosine of the tipping angle. The nature and shape of the oscillations suggest that they may be driven by instabilities through a mechanism proposed by Castaing. These instabilities arise due to a modification of the non-linear term in the Leggett equation by the large magnetization gradients present at the edges of the pulsed region.

Notes: Abstract We report an investigation of the intrinsic properties of vibrating wires made of different materials at low temperatures ≈ 10 mK〈T 〈400 mK) and at high magnetic fieldsB ≤ 11.5 T). The aim of this study was to find a material with sufficiently low intrinsic damping even in the highest fields to allow accurate viscometry in highly diluted spin-polarized 3 He- 4 He solutions. A thorough theoretical treatment of the behaviour of vibrating wires (with a high quality factor) in high magnetic fields is presented. Experimental data obtained for NbTi, Ta, W, Ag, manganin and PtW are analyzed within the framework of this theoretical description. Measurements of the field- and temperature dependence of the shift of the resonance frequency and of the internal friction of the vibrating wires clearly indicate that PtW is the most suitable amongst the materials investigated for vibrating wire viscometry in quantum liquids in high magnetic fields.
