Summary The feasibility of counting droppings as an indirect method of population determination was tested on the basis of numerous prior and parallel investigations, and it's practical applications further developed. With the aid of a monitoring system applied at six forest stations each with different site conditions and various populations of wild ruminants it could be demonstrated that the method of counting droppings was an effective way to determine hoofed game populations. With a low amount of input it should be possible to estimate the size and distribution of game populations. Additionally representative sampling permits specific local statements on the forest — game interrelationships especially in respect to the determination of available browsing capacity or the effect of touristic activities on the game population.
