    Notes: Xanthomonas campestris MB245, a specific pathogen of the weedy grass Poa annua (annual bluegrass), is being developed as a bioherbicide to control this pest in turf. Nutritional and environmental factors were evaluated based on their ability to support rapid submerged culture growth and high cell yield. Temperature optima for the growth of X. campestris cells in submerged culture were between 27 and 30°C. At 30°C, optimal nutritional conditions for X. campestris growth supported generation times of 150–175 min and cell yields after 24 h growth of 1–2 × 1010 cells ml−1. Media containing sucrose or glucose as the carbon source and various organic nitrogen sources supported optimal X. campestris growth and cell yield. The addition of vitamin mixtures to complex and defined media had no significant effect on growth or cell yield. The age of X. campestris cultures had a significant impact on cell survival after freeze drying. Following freeze drying, log phase cell survival (44%) was significantly lower than early and late stationary phase cell survival, 62% and 68%, respectively. Cells harvested in stationary phase, freeze dried and stored under vacuum at 4°C, showed no significant loss in viability after 6 months. Thus, high cell concentrations of the bioherbicide X. campestris can be rapidly produced in submerged culture and stabilized as freeze-dried preparations.

    Notes: With the goal of developing a defined medium for the production of desiccation-tolerant blastospores of the bioinsecticidal fungus Paecilomyces fumosoroseus, we evaluated the impact of various media components such as amino acids, carbohydrates, trace metals and vitamins on hyphal growth and sporulation of P. fumosoroseus cultures and on the freeze-drying tolerance of blastospores produced under these conditions. A comparison of 13 amino acids as sole nitrogen sources showed that glutamate, aspartate, glycine and arginine supported biomass accumulations (12–16 mg ml−1) and blastospore yields (6–11 × 108 blastospores ml−1) comparable to our standard production medium which contains casamino acids as the nitrogen source. Using glutamate as the sole nitrogen source, tests with various carbohydrates showed that P. fumosoroseus grew best on glucose (18.8 mg biomass ml−1) but produced similar blastospore concentrations (7.3–11.0 × 108) when grown with glucose, glycerol, fructose or sucrose. P. fumosoroseus cultures grown in media with sodium citrate or galactose as the sole carbohydrate produced lower blastospore concentrations but more-desiccation-tolerant spores. Zinc was the only trace metal tested that was required for optimal growth and sporulation. In a defined medium with glutamate as the nitrogen source, vitamins were unnecessary for P. fumosoroseus growth or sporulation. When blastospores were freeze-dried in the absence of a suspension medium, residual glucose (〉2.5% w/v) was required for enhanced spore survival. Thus, a defined medium containing basal salts, glucose, glutamate and zinc can be used to produce optimal concentrations of desiccation-tolerant blastospores of P. fumosoroseus.

    Notes: Summary The electro-optical response of two novel side chain liquid crystalline polysiloxane copolymers containing chiral pendant groups was investigated. It was found that both copolymers possessed N* phase with a long pitch and therefore the origin of the electro-optical response detected in this phase was considered to be the electroclinic effect.

    Notes: Abstract. Oral infections due to Candida albicans are a common occurrence in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the yeast and hyphal forms of the organism could be killed using the light-activated antimicrobial agent toluidine blue O (TBO). Three variables were investigated: TBO concentration, laser light dose and pre-irradiation time (PIT). Irradiation with light from a helium neon (HeNe) gas laser used in conjunction with the photosensitiser TBO resulted in substantial kills of both the yeast and hyphal forms. Killing was light dose-dependent with 42 J being the most effective dose. The optimum PIT for the yeast form was 5 min, whereas killing of the hyphal form was not affected by PIT. The results of this study have shown that both forms of C. albicans are susceptible to lethal photosensitisation using TBO in conjunction with HeNe laser light, suggesting the possibility that this approach could be useful for eliminating the organism from diseased lesions in vivo.

    Notes: Summary Three series of new liquid crystalline (LC) copolymers having a polysiloxane backbone and two different mesogenic pendant groups, one involving a vinylacetic acid moiety in the spacer, have been synthesised. Thermal characterisation of these polymeers has allowed comparison of behaviour between a number of different copolymer systems. It was found that increasing amounts of the vinylacetic acid moiety lowered the clearing points (Ti) of the copolymers in an almost linear fashion whilst also inhibiting crystallinity in these polymers.

    Notes: Abstract We evaluated the suitability of selected food items for the adult spined stilt bug, Jalysus wickhami Van Duzee (Hemiptera: Berytidae), by providing one of seven diet treatments: (1) prepupae of the parasitoid, Cotesia congregata (Say) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), on a leaf of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L., ‘NC 2326’) (Solanaceae); (2) C. congregata prepupae alone (i.e., no tobacco leaf); (3) eggs of the parasitoid's host, Manduca sexta (L.) (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae), on a tobacco leaf; (4) M. sexta eggs alone; (5) tobacco aphids, Myzus nicotianae Blackman (Homoptera: Aphididae), on a tobacco leaf; (6) a tobacco leaf alone; and (7) no prey and no tobacco. A tobacco leaf was necessary for the long-term survival of stilt bugs, but prey source did not affect longevity. Regardless of the prey type, stilt bugs with access to a tobacco leaf lived 21–23 days, while stilt bugs without access to tobacco lived less than 12 days. Animal prey provided a protein source required for egg deposition in J. wickhami, and prey species differed in their relative nutritive values. Female stilt bugs that fed on M. sexta eggs or on C. congregata prepupae were significantly more fecund (102 and 106 nymphs per female, respectively) than females that fed on tobacco aphids (24 nymphs per female). Results suggest that stilt bugs may feed on tobacco aphids and C. congregata prepupae when other prey are unavailable.

    Notes: Abstract A modal noise model is presented that combines many features of previous theories such as varying fibre contrast, exponential noise p.d.f. and Gaussian noise p.d.f. The model also includes a new feature: the ability to treat multiple lossy connectors in the same link. This model is verified through extensive experimentation and is shown to be conservative, i.e. predicted noise penalties are larger than those observed. Using the model, modal noise penalties are predicted for a number of different link configurations, and laser parameters that result in acceptable amounts of modal noise are identified. The model is also demonstrated as a design tool for determining laser parameters that result in acceptable amounts of modal noise in typical links.

    Notes: Abstract The authors report on the fabrication and electrooptic measurement of modulation-dopted field-effect transistors (MODFETs) monolithically integrated with coplanar stripline fixtures incorporating photoconductive switches. Both lattice-matched devices on InP substrates and pseudomorphic devices on GaAs substrates, as well as two different gate access structures have been characterized. In comparing two devices with identical gate access structures, one finds that the delay time of the pseudomorphic device is almost twice as long as that of the lattice-matched device. Surprisingly, the switching times (drain output risetimes) of the two devices are comparable. One also sees that the gate access structure significantly affects the switching in two lattice-matched devices: the switching times for double-gate and single-gate contact devices are 4.2 and 5.2 ps, respectively. In this case, however, no difference was seen in the delay times. These results show that, for the present devices, the switching and delay times are dominated by different mechanisms.

It argues that feministpolitical ecology provides a generally strongerframework for understanding these issues thanecofeminism, but cautions against a reversion tomaterialist approaches in reactions to ecofeminismthat, like ecofeminism, can be static and ignore theagency of women and men. The paper draws attention tothe subjectivities of women and their embodiedlivelihoods as a more useful approach to understandingthe ways in which women relate to water in bothirrigated agriculture and domestic provisioning.
